FYI - you are in England where the intensity of the light is quite different than in the southern US (I'm in Florida). These crotons are EVERYWHERE here and our local nursery has given us some invaluable information about them. While they should get light daily, in bright/hot sun, these plants actually don't do as well in terms of not producing such high intensity of colors than if the plants received partial sun or are place in a bright but shady spot. Your plant is completely normal in producing green leaves at the top. They will eventually turn to the more vibrant colors as they grow. You can also prune these to make them more bushier. As new leaves start to form at the very top, pinch them off. It causes the leaves below to grow bigger and sprout out in more areas than just the top, giving the plant a fuller look. :-)

I too am in Florida (north central) we had an unusually bad frost and all the leaves browned. Should I remove just the leaves or cut them? They're young, only 18-20 inches tall. Thank you 😊

I have three crotons and they're all so unique. Petra loves the direct morning sun exposure and is thirsty all the time, I have to water it every two days even now in the middle of October. If it gets too much direct sun, the three green leaves at the top will droop a little, then come back up in the afternoon (east-facing window). The Banana Croton is fairly non reactive, the only issue I've had with it is that it absorbs the water very slowly and the soil can stay wet for too long. Same thing happened recently with the Gold Dust. I decided to change the soil thinking it was going to develop root rot and now the leaves are drooping like crazy. Definitely does not like being disturbed.

Dry leaves is usually a sign of too low humidity. Do you know the humidity of the spot it’s in? At the same time, older leaves will die off eventually so a bit of drying around the bottom isn’t really an issues. I’d only be really worried if the new growth or newer leaves were having issues

These plants seem to be climate sensitive. Here in North Florida, the leaves will turn a bright yellow if exposed to direct summer sun. They are also very thirsty, must water at least every two days in this climate. I have them potted in the front of my house, but they have to be moved to keep the sun from damaging them. They seem to love the extreme humidity here as long as they are out of the sun.

it depends on what is available where you live but I suggest a houseplant focused fertiliser rather than an all purpose one

I got 4 diffrent ones and panicked after seeing the 5 leaves fall off in one a day... Thank you for easing my mind.

I left my guy outside for 3 hours in direct sun and three of the leaves got burnt. (They're super wilted and crunchy) Should I cut those leaves off or just water it and see what happens? If so, where do I cut?
@GoodGrowing4 жыл бұрын
Oh no!! Must have been too big of a jump too fast! The specific leaves that got damaged will not recover. They can firm up again but the burnt bits will not unburn. You can cut them off if you don't like the way they look. I'd cut a few millimetres into the fresh feeling part of the leaf, so all the burn is gone! Best of luck!

So the whole "Joseph's Coat" thing comes from a Bible story in which Joseph's father had gifted him with a very beautiful and colorful coat that all his brothers were hating on and eventually was essentially the last straw before they decided to throw him in a snake pit and leave him for dead. Wonderful story.

Good to know, thanks for sharing.. however I’m against all religion so I’m just calling it Croton from now on.. Religion in Iran.. where I’m from is used to beat you over the head, incarcerate you, and are super mean to women. All in the name of religion.. sorry for the downer.. love your plants!
