In the book this scene starting at 11:48 played out differently. Jie Wei hears Ning Yi's voice behind the door and finds Ning Yi kneeling pale and shivering drenched in the rain. He faints and she carries him into the deserted palace. Takes off all his wet clothes while he is unconscious and wraps him in an old blanket on the bed. Obviously that would not have made it past the censors.

However, she discreetly covers him with the sheet and takes off the clothes underneath. Would’ve been visually feasible. But it would have shifted the focus of the Yilan scene - in the series it’s solely on the grief for the mother. In the novel, the scene ends in a wild make-out session (both clothed though) If any scene in the series is inspired by this, I think it's most likely Zhiwei changing clothes in Prince Chu's mansion. Much tamer and nicely adapted to censorship ofc

@@stellasonabilis9884 True, I would have liked to have seen how the drama would have portrayed the part in the novel when she realizes she took all of his clothes off, including his underwear and his reaction when he looks under the blanket to see what she did when he was unconscious. It would have been something to see, but alas, it only happened in the book. I do agree that the drama decided to keep the focus on his grief for his mother instead and that was not a bad call either.

@@stellasonabilis9884 I think he was laughing at her outrageous answer. I don't think so much that the blank page was a prank. I think Shaoning hit it on the head at 42:03 when she said it looked like the blank paper used to mourn the dead. Ning Yi really did not want to be at the birthday feast at all, because he was missing his mother. I do believe he was indeed sending a message to his father, not so much as a prank but as a dig because his father banned any mention of his mother. Even when he said his "gift" was to play his mother's guqin , his father changed the subject. He certainly noticed that Nin Yi was in a depressed mood and knew why. As the emperor said, the feast would be used by his family as a stage to take jabs at each other.
