How to make a cat scratching post using recycled materials you most likely have laying around your house. For FREE!!
I dunno about you but I just don't like the thought of spending $10-15 for some cardboard and the way MrMan goes through these, I had to start making my own. I'm 'thrifty' (read: cheap) like that.
What you'll need:
cardboard
box cutter
glue
ruler
tape
hole punch (only if you want to hang it)
twine, rope, yarn, string, etc (again, only if you want to hang it)
and of course, catnip.
I tried recording MrMan using this thing but every time I get the camera out, he stops scratching at it. Go figure. Cats...

To all you people that said it was mean of him to declaw the cat, maybe he adopted it like that, or it had a medical issue with its claws and it needed to be done just saying

Exactly!!! I've seen few cats for adoption that were already declawed. Awful, awful thing to do, but that doesn't mean THIS guy did it to that poor kitty

Considering that his other cat is not declawed, I feel safe to assume he didn't have Bianca declawed, or if he did, that he learned better after that.

I’ve had two cats declawed (technically only one was my decision as the other was the family cat, growing up) and they both had happy long lives, oblivious to their missing claws as far as I could tell. The only indication that they might have known is the fact that they developed the “cling and shred” technique, bear hugging with front paws then kicking with their back claws whenever a poor human made the mistake of thinking they wanted a belly rub lol. Of course, their paws were tender and swollen for about 4 days after the procedure and I was instructed to use paper shreds instead of litter along with giving them their pain meds during that time. Both cats handled the recovery very well and their meds clearly helped manage the pain until they were fully healed and back to their normal selves again. I’m not going to be so ignorant to say that they didn’t feel pain and there’s the possibility of infection and all the other risks that go along with surgery so it’s not something to take lightly and I understand why declawing isn’t acceptable to many. I currently own a cat and, no I’ll never declaw him or any other cat again but I don’t think someone is evil for having it done, assuming they’ve exhausted all other options. A lot of cats are given up because they swiped at a child or tend to play too aggressively so, if declawing is what keeps them in a home, I think it’s totally reasonable.

I love how Mr.Man couldn't be disturbed for filming lol, I made a cat scratcher post with a big cardboard tube and some of those carpet samples you get for like 50 cents from the carpet store, but he loves cardboard too, so think I will make him one like this too, hanging it up is a great idea!

Applause! I have done a cardboard cat scratcher before, but never thought of punching holes and hanging one. One of my cats has taken to sharpening her claws on my bed. The other has given up on scratching completely (she's 13 and not feeling very well).I also used catnip. Thanks for some great suggestions.

To save yourself the work of punching holes, You could just put the string through the side of the trays and lay it behind the strips, securing it with tape so it doesn't pull tight and push strips out. You could tie string around the strips or use tape to secure like you did at the bottom. Or just hole punch at top of tray and string it up that way. It just seems like a lot of work that could be forfeited with a bit of a design shift.

Thanks! They can be a mess but better to sweep than ruin the arm of a chair! One could make one for the floor too. Just make the frame wider and large enough for a full-grown cat to stand on and weight it down. Load it the same way, just don't make the holes. :)

Just to let people know there are times when you get a cat a shelter or a Foster care theybmaybe declawed. I for one do not believe in declawing because they can not defend themselves but I know people who have. This guy here may have gotten this cat from somewhere who already declawed it I would not judge him on that.

I bought something similar to this at a store and I still can't get my cat to scratch that and not the couch I even put catnip on it he rubs up against it but he still don't scratch that just my couch and the same area of the couch too what else can I try
@MsCarbonated
@MsCarbonated 9 жыл бұрын
A few things to try: 1) Place the scratching post in front of the area of the couch he scratches to make the next suggestion easier. 2) Gently or playfully, depending on your cats personality, pick him up when he is scratching the couch and place his paws on the scratching post. 3) Encourage him to use it by scratching it with your own nails and praise him and give him treats whenever he uses it. Anytime he starts to even go near his favourite scratching spot, move him to the scratching post - place his paws on in and let go. You go through the motions again of you using the post and encouraging him when he does. The positive feedback he gets from you when he uses it will encourage future use. Also, when he is even near the scratching post or just anytime through out the day, you jump over to the scratching post acting all happy to use it and say things like "good boy or atta boy" when he come over too will encourage him. (I'm talking from experience here:) Also, some cats don't like cardboard. Just find something you don't mind him scratching: an old carpet remnant, old canvas like from a suitcase cover, or newspaper. Work with him, encourage him, and you will get him to his own scratching place. Most cats do better with areas all around the house to scratch while they are young and full of energy. Don't Give UP!! It may take you a couple weeks to get him to never touch the couch and then some reminders now and again but You Can Do it :)

@Rotsuoy
@Rotsuoy 9 жыл бұрын
1) Try mugwort or valerian instead of catnip- every cat has a different biological reaction to catnip, just like people. 2) When you cat rubs or sniffs it, reward them with affection and verbal communication. 3) If the cat scratches something else, pick them up (not cuddlesomely, but not cruely), tell them no, and move them to the scratching post. Putting the scratching post on the place where they are scratching is a bad idea. It often encourages them to scratch all in that area, and not specifically the thing you want them to scratch.

DECLAWING CATS IS NOT MEAN Some kittens like my aunties cat can actually kill them self from having sharp claws cause my aunties kitty scrathched her self and she has VERY bad scratches that bleed and she needs a cone same with cutting ears IT DOES not HURT THEM Declawing does not hurt as it is not a part of the actual body we’re it won’t bleed and cutting cats ears isn’t bad as it’s a very thin layer of skin
@Clairness
@Clairness 3 жыл бұрын
If declawing did not remove any living tissue or bone, the nail would grow back. If you cut your nail, or pull your nail off of the nail bed, will it grow back? Yes, unless you have caused damage to the nail matrix, which is living tissue. Even if it came down to it and that's all it was to declawing a cat - that is still damaging live tissue. Sadly though, it is not, as a cat's anatomy varies greatly from a humans. Declawing removes the entire first phalange (or "knuckle", if compared to human anatomy) of a cats toe, as the nail grows directly out of the phalange, and there is no "nail bed" or "nail matrix" on a feline. Cats are digitigrade animals (they walk on their toes with the rest of their foot lifted up), and removing this first phalange can cause extreme issues, such as trouble walking, which can cause arthritis later in life, as well as litter box issues, not to mention the trouble of surviving outside if a declawed cat happens to get outside. The only time it is okay to declaw a cat is if it is in your veterinarian's best interest for solving the issue of an infected claw that cannot be solved without amputation. If a cat is tearing themselves up with their claws, especially a kitten - you can trim their claws, or take them to a veterinarian or groomer to get their claws trimmed, or there is the option of claw covers - which should ONLY be used if you are a responsible pet owner and give maintenance to them frequently. If you cannot provide your time, or money, once every two weeks to provide nail trimming services to a cat, you probably should not have one. In the long run, it takes up much less time AND money than if you were to declaw a cat and had to manage them being uncomfortable with the litter box and peeing on the floor, as well as arthritis and any other issues that may arise. But at that point, most people who declaw cats are the type of people to toss them out or take them to a shelter when health or what they view as behavioral problems arise. I'm going to end this with, the video uploader did not declaw his own cat, he rescued the cat from an abusive household already declawed. Shame on them, hurray for him for rescuing and taking care of the poor thing.

Money and time. Considering it takes less than 20 minutes to make one of these and at $10 a piece, that means you are 'making' $30 an hour making these. Or in reverse, you've got to scrub toilets for an hour to pay for someone else to make one for you. I dunno about you but I would rather make 3 of these at $30 an hour than scrub toilets for that hour to pay someone else for one. It's all in how you look at it.

Studies have proven that removing a cat's claws can cause a load of mental health problems, as well as physical health problems, to cats, because when a cat is declawed it actually removes the entire tip of their toe, including the bone. *This is the equivalent of removing the first joint of your fingers.* It takes absolutely no effort for me to sit down and clip my cat's nails with nail clippers and causes no medical harm to the animal. It has become part of my daily routine, his nails stay cleaner, he plays better because his nails are clipped, and he doesn't scratch the furniture because he has no primal need to shed or dull his claws. It takes nothing to sit down and clip the very tiny, needley tip the first few times, and every time the tip is clipped, the wick inside recedes in time, making it easier and easier to clip their nails each time. Not to mention, the process of clipping the very tip of the nail with clippers teaches you to have better control without the threat of accidentally clipping the wick inside. Unlike humans, cat nails are very much alive. Like the vibrissae (whiskers) over their entire bodies, cat nails help them sense vibrations and feel the shape and volume of their surroundings. Because of this fact, declawing also harms the locomotion of cats. It can inhibit their ability to feel vibrations in the floor and surfaces of things they like to climb on, therefore destroying their ability to reach high places with ease. Cats use high perches to make themselves feel safer in their environments, and if a cat has difficulty reaching these perches, it can cause distress and even depression in cats. Cat depression also leads to feline obesity, and is the number one cause of feline obesity. Feline obesity, in return, leads to diabetes, arthritis, and intestinal tumors. So, go ahead, spend hundreds of dollars on cutting off the tip of your cat's toes without their consent, which will lead you down the road of even more expensive medical procedures. Or, you know, you could just not get a cat.

I actually agree with you and have never and would never get a cat de-clawed. But there are some situations in which having a de-clawed cat might be the greater good--I'm particularly thinking of elderly home-bound people with health problems that tend to make the person more susceptible to infections. The social benefits of having a cat when you are isolated are strong and would improve the overall health of the owner. Dogs are often too demanding for sick people to adequately care for; cats are relatively easy to care for but scratch. Like it or not, we live in a world where cats are killed if they aren't adopted (without the cats consent, of course), and so in our less-than-ideal world I can see times when it might produce a greater good for everyone if a cat was de-clawed.

multuminparvo5 We also live in a world where pets can be easily taken to groomers where they can have their nails clipped and buffed for much less than the cost of declawing. My own cats claws stay about as dull as a dog's nails because of my constant grooming. Not to mention those sickly and home bound people can have emotional support and service animals prescribed to them much more easily than mental and emotional therapy medications can be. That being said, most groomers and vets allow a 10-30% discount on visits for emotional support, service, and therapy animals, so the cost is even more lessened. I still stand by the fact that declawing is damaging to the emotional and physical health of the cat, as it's been proven through decades of research. Also, I still stand by the fact that the emotional and physical health problems associated with declawing can be much more expensive than a monthly or bi-weekly trip to the groomer.

Do you people not realize some cats are adopted, which have already been declawed by previous owners? Or that sometimes it's just the front claws? Personally I have no problem with people who choose to delclaw their cats. I worked in an animal hospital a long time and it doesn't hurt them, they are sedated and recover fine. The only thing is they don't have nails anymore. Same with declawing your dogs. I don't do it to my cats or dogs, it just happens to be what some people choose. But if you think about it: if someone had the money to declaw their cats, they have money to take care of their cats and pamper them, so typically a declawed cat is well taken care of. Stop being butt hurt about them, I guarantee a declawed cat is fine and not upset about it's missing nails.

A cat uses its claws differently than a dog uses its nails. Claws are essential for a cat. They need claws to climb and capture prey, or simply to follow their instincts to scratch things. Declawing them is akin to cutting off fingers in a human - it severely diminishes their catness.

I would worry more about the coloring and dyes on cat toys, the scent in kitty litter, the Stainmaster chemicals on the carpet, the chemicals in fabric softener and detergent you wash your bedding in that the cats sleeps on and spend so much of their time touching as being more toxic than the dry non toxic glue this is held together with that kids eat.

Thanks. It looks more tedious than it actually is. I can do them start to finish in about 20 minutes which at $10 a piece, is $30/hour. I can't get a job that pays that much so for me, it's economical.

Thank you! Every time I buy these I think, "I could make these" I have lots of cardboard. If it was just one I needed and it's $10 that would be different. However, I purchase 2 at a time on a regular basis and it seems like such a waste of money when I can make them myself for free and a little time. Okay, I'm going to give it a go thanks so much!

Thanks. Anywhere they like to scratch that you don't want them to, put up pieces of aluminum foil and they won't touch it. I've had to do that plenty of times and eventually they get the hint. Also, adding catnip to the scratchers helps to attract them to them. Unless of course your cat is a freak like mine and catnip doesn't even phase her, LOL!!

Crouton Crackerjacks - A cardboard scratcher. Cool Idea. Thank you. Gets my like. Purrfect and simple alternative for those who are even thinking of declawing. Great video and much respect and kudos for rescuing Bianca. She’s cute. Readers, please don’t declaw your cat. Get yourself some cardboard and a bit of twine and boom. Happy cat.

I'm sure a drill would work on low speed as long as it was in a vise to hold it securely. By all means though, you don't have to put holes in it. I do just cuz I like it to hang on the door. Keeps it out of the way and so I don't step on it when I walk through here in the dark, LOL!!

Great homemade scratcher. Any suggestions for weighting the box so it perhaps sits more snugly on the floor? And any suggestions for how to keep the scratcher from swinging when hung up? Or do cats like it that way? It seems to me it might be more effective if more secured when hung. Thanks! Great job, may try it myself one day.
