Sometimes those misses, birds flying away after being hit is a nerve reaction by the bird. Once they are in the air a few moments, they drop and have expired before they hit the ground. The reaction an animal or bird has once they are hit is to move. The distance is not an indicator of the initial wound being extremely deadly.
