Between the German bombers, their escorts and the RAF, there were literally hundreds of planes in the air over London and many other cities of England. But just imagine the people looking up.... sweeping contrails all over the sky, punctuated by sporadic explosions, a popping noise heard on the ground a few seconds later, while flaming debris and a few parachutes come down in every part of London for months. Meanwhile, the bombers are letting loose their payloads, and huge parts of the city are in flames. 28,000 civilians killed in the 3 months of the BOB. That number would be 80,000 by war's end. Check out the movie "Hope and Glory" for a fantastic look at the time.
