Crowd funding - a way to exploit the well-meaning and gullible?

Crowd funding sites may be exploiting people's well-meaning charity, and people's self-aggrandising virtue-signalling. Beware!
Support me on Patreon: / lindybeige
I was made aware of Water Seer because many of my Facebook friends were 'liking' it. I saw the crowd-funding campaign's video on Indigogo and immediately felt that something was fishy. I may be wrong - perhaps this is a legitimate project that might do some good, but to me it looked like a useless project. Here I use my freedom of speech to make not an accusation, but a warning to potential backers to stay alert and to question the value of a project, and not be bamboozled by the trappings of charity into thinking that a project that promises lot of free stuff to poor people in the Third World must be a good thing to invest in.
Possibly Water Seer is a knowing scam, or possibly it is something put together by self-deluded but well-intentioned people. You decide.
The invention here is so simple, that if it worked, I suspect that they might have had invented them thousands of years ago.

Watching Lloyd doing his videos in one take to me is a big reason for subbing :) I don't agree with half he says, but I deeply admire his conversation and presentation skills. Try talking off the cuff about some random topic like crowd funding for 15 minutes without notable pauses and/or uhhhs yourself and see how hard it really is, then watch Lloyd doing it seemingly effortlessly.

Yup. This is exactly the kind of "foreign aid" that gives everything else a bad name. I know a few people in the "bringing clean water to Africa" business, and the problems they struggle with are _a lot_ more elementary. For example: - Stuff that gets built with modern technology can't be maintained without modern technology. Spare parts run out, pipes rust, cement cracks, and in a few months the whole installation is worthless. - If there's anything of value, people will steal it. It's just a fact of life, and poor people can't usually afford the luxury of thinking about morals and the community. - When there's water somewhere, the richer people in the community will bring their livestock there to graze. Then the animals pee all over the place, and the water is polluted. What they actually need aren't cool gadgets that look good in a computer animation. They need the kind of tech that worked for the Romans, because it can be maintained by a bunch of illiterate people using stuff they can produce locally, and it doesn't contain parts that wear down, need to be replaced, or are worth stealing.

@WM_46
@WM_46 7 жыл бұрын
Indeed, a simulation is a way to model a system with inputs that you can change, it is not defined by having something to look at. What happens when a cannon ball is fired out of a cannon? Well let's simulate it with our kinematic equations to find the range for specific angles!
@Tennouseijin
@Tennouseijin 7 жыл бұрын
+Zablock Awesomeguy Not necessarily. If they made a simulation based on a realistic model of physics, and with reasonable starting conditions, then yes, it would show that the idea won't work. But if they were to use a bad model or unrealistic starting conditions, then the simulation could lead to either totally random conclusions, or it's even possible to make a simulation that will "prove your hypothesis", no matter how ridiculous the hypothesis is.

So the griffins will keep flying up trying to get the dead sheep, all the way to Earth's orbit. Thing is, Thunderf00t made major errors in both the math and science behind it. Water vapor and steam are vastly different animals and the thermodynamics actually work once you understand that. The problem is (like Lindy mentions) you eventually start to remove the moisture from the base of the bulb because warm air with a low humidity tends to evaporate water. The bulb would need time to cool after each run otherwise you would lose the cooling effect quite quickly.
@BlackburnBigdragon
@BlackburnBigdragon 7 жыл бұрын
The real problem is this: The thing is designed to get water from the air, but they want it to work as a condenser. But they want to stick it in regions that are arid. These regions have very little water in the air TO condense. That would be the main failure of the device on top of the evaporation problem. I don't believe that the thing would even be able to condense enough moisture OUT of the air to even get a drop into it. Unless they ran it during the rainy season, and in that case, there's water pouring down anyway. You can't condense moisture out of dry air.
@Birdofgreen
@Birdofgreen 7 жыл бұрын
Actually it is possible to condense water out of air with as little as 25% humidity if the temperature is high (100F reduced to 60F) but as you get colder the humidity needs to be higher. At 70F you need 50% humidity to condense water out of the atmosphere at a 50F. Again, the real issue is running warm dry air over cool moist air. The warm air is going to absorb the moisture and lose some temperature while the cold moist air is going to gain some temperature and lose moisture. If you captured an amount of air and condensed it without releasing it or adding warm air to it then you would have a working idea (think along the lines of ice buildup in a freezer). As it sits, without cooler than atmosphere airflow, you have no hope of condensing air at any temperature.

Two things that don't mix together: the internet and critical thinking. Actually the device is an allegory of the scam in question, it's so poetic: 1. contributors loaded with money are siphoned into the tubes through you tube. 2. They enter a dark and cold hole in the ground where their money is concentrated to the scammers bank accounts "vanishing into a black hole". 3. then they are ejected and discarded by the other people rushing in since "it's too good not to be real" - "all that matters is that I'm happy & cool".

Another great video - for some reason I’ve been watching a lot of your videos recently. These types of scams seem so prevalent, and you hit on something that scientists and medical professionals also have a huge issue with. Good scientists are usually cagey when talking about a subject such as medical treatments and will often talk using words like “likely”, “probably”, “possible”; and rarely use words that infer certainty. Someone who is dealing pseudoscience, most often seem to completely lack that compunction. Patient: “what are my chances?” Medical staff “well, this drug is our best shot, it has a lot of good research behind it and we have recorded data showing the efficacy in people, but the likelihood of success is only about 30% in your disease, and will depend on the extent of your disease. We will try it first and then use another one if you don’t respond, but we can’t make any guarantees.” Charlatan: “I have this amazing oil that will cure your disease 100%. It will also cure AIDS, Malaria, Ebola, and in-growing toenails. I discovered it through a dream. It’s 100% guaranteed to work!”

"Waterseer" uses no technology that wasn't available 1,000 years ago. How many 1,000-year-old water orchards are there in hot countries? Actually there's such a thing as an "air well" that uses the night / day cycle to condense water and those can be pretty good. They're not based on nonsense though like this is. The original Waterseer proposal was based around a statement something like "the temperature 2 metres below ground is always stable and cooler than the air above, through day and night". That is more or less true. Less so, when you're blowing kilowatts of heat into it all day. Then it stops being stable. Maybe some sort of windmill-powered compressor thing to cool air and condense water would work. The problem would be getting it done on a level of technology that's maintainable. And also having it be more efficient than just running some pipes from somewhere. Generally the middle of the scorching desert, you tend not to find people. Because it sucks there. People can only live near a supply of water. Bringing pots full of it into a hypothetical village built in the middle of a skin-roasting sandstorm, I can't think what even the point of that is. Like it's to "help some Africans" like a well-intentioned 3 year old might want to do. Engineers need to solve real problems, and throwing money at unicorn farms doesn't help anybody. There are many many ways to help poor people in the world. Stupid pipe dreams not being among the best. Might be good if people in rich countries understood poverty better.

It's difficult to reply succinctly to those who are led astray by these fallacious projects, offers, etc. For I am a Christian, and my New Testament says I am not allowed to call someone a FOOL. Previously phony offers were on the TV. Old people and the unthinking flocked to them in droves! Years ago I lived next door to a 90 year old spinster in New Jersey, USA. She saw a little hand-pushed snow plow on TV. She asked my opinion. My first question was, who is going to push it? That was a new question in her old mind. And there were other points too. But she bought it and saw in short order she had wasted her money. I especially detest ads and signs in stores that declare, AS SEEN ON TV! Since when is that a recommendation!??? The TV ads that misled SO MANY people, especially the elderly, were so successful that they have now moved to the Internet. Why is there so little WISDOM any more? Or insight? Or at least learning from mistakes, be they yours or those of others?

Sadly, people don't change that easily, and some attitudes and behaviours are sort of part of human nature. Naïveté is one of those innate flaws of most of us. And in some regards, I enjoy listening to you because we both share a talent of digression, meaning being able to digress... and perhaps digress again, and perhaps go down several layers of digressional layers and then come back up and drive your point home, whereas the average human of mediocre intelligence will digress once, attempt yet another, and then forget what it was they were talking about and then excuse themselves saying they lost their train of thought, which apparently derailed shortly after leaving the yard. Basic. Simple. You are complex in a clear way that is easy to follow and as I debated whether to stop watching you as clearly you are a nutter and must be ordering cocaine through Uber Eats, or you are like me, blessed with a high metabolism, a rapid mind, and those who cannot follow, well, don't look back... you strike me as someone who deeply cares about humanity and you might stop to aid the old lady having heart palpitations of the mind... bleh bleh... I am getting off-topic, let's get the thought train out of the carriage house or turnabout thingy... LOve the channel, and you're someone I count among many I listen to and watch and learn a great deal from. So many of your videos are older, such as this one and the one previous was your video on youtube and the mystery of their algorithms and was some bot about to eradicate your channel next, etc... this one auto-played next. I was already feeling a sense of increased appreciation when I clicked the petition over your fellow KZbinr, ThengThrand, only to discover that it was concluded and the result was remarkably positive. Well done, guys. So, right off as I listened to the point you were making on why Waterseer should be highly suspected as being a fraudulent fundraising campaign, I was in full agreement and tsk tsk... ah, but this is an older video and I was curious to see, after you challenge at the end, just what the outcome was. I was happy to see many articles on Waterseer being exposed as a hoax. Spot on. You called it. So I just wanted to take a minute to say hey, right on man, you were right..... which now has turned into 20 and my employer wonders why I am always a few minutes late to work... fortunately today is my day off and the only thing I am late for is... oh, i don't know, watering the plants with this new amazing system I just bought that pulls not only water from mid-air, but also collects fertilizing particles too so that when I water my yard, I am also providing ample nutrients.... At an insane cost. Solar roads have got to be the dumbest idea in the history of ... anything. The disparity between the ideal properties of the surface of a road and the surface of solar panels is vast. You could put a roof over the road, loaded with solar panels angled for maximum exposure, and the cost and effectiveness would skyrocket. Or, I heard about people putting solar panels on the roofs of buildings. Do you think that might work?

When it comes to pure scams (that is, scams that do no direct, physical harm to anyone), the ones that prey on people's will to do good are the most despicable. They cause indirect harm to anyone in need of help by making people less willing to help for fear of being tricked, and punish the very will to do good. It's the most evil thing you can do without directly getting people hurt.

EXACTLY. Initial investors are usually rewarded with stock certificates for taking the investment risk so they too may profit if successful. Giving money to ventures without asking for equity is naïve. Most ventures fail. By definition. Your money represents the fruits of your labor. Don't squander it. This is. It the same as donating to an ESTABLISHED charity which is in place and functional giving support to others. Supporting operating costs of charities is important. That's why they're usually tax exempt. Ventures on the other hand, are not. If successful, they may mean huge profits for the founders. Now...if the venture is non-profit then perhaps that may be a good choice since to fund seed money without equity. If it's a for-profit venture, then ask why they're not offing stock instead. Big. Red. Flag.

I love how Lloyd does it all in one take. So many videos are heavily edited so the track is chopped every few seconds, making for a result which sort of stutters along. But this video does not do that. A true professional.

Back in my unscrupulous days & before easy internet access decades ago, my friend & I used to dress preppy (wearing the local highschool colors) & go door 2 door saying we're raising money for our "highschool orchestra" (even though we had already graduated.) We even found the actual highschool's schedule of performances & made flyers @ Kinkos so we looked even more convincing. We would do this 2x a month hitting a new neighborhood each time. While no individual ever donated more than $40, it added up quickly. Looking back now as a mature law-bidding adult 😇, it shocks me how easy it was to fool the average person. I'd say maybe 1/20 ppl had enough commonsense & critical thinking skills to question us & not "donate." This is just a digital version w/ a similar structure. Believability & pulling @ heart strings will always empty the wallets of suckers.

There's a lot of dumb people out there willing to listen to anything. I'm convinced now that at least 50% of all people in the US are not self-aware. They just do what they were programmed to do by their parents, their religion, n social media etc. As long as they're approached within the confines of their borrowed values, say for example under the pretense of god or a valued media icon, people will donate/whatever in droves. Televangelists and many others have proven this.

Nicely stated. It seems that not only is critical thinking not taught in school anymore, but it is downright discouraged. If someone is critical of something, they are simply being pessimistic or discriminatory or a host of other derogatory names. Good advice. It can be too easy to get caught up in these things that look good on the surface but are actually questionable upon closer scrutiny. Sometimes it’s impossible to tell if the need is real. A poster familiar to me asks for help burying a deceased baby, my personal preference is to give a minimal amount & oh well if it was a scam.
