I would expect a pre-order to have greater consumer protection than crowdfunding? After all, the old Kickstarter mantra about not being a store doesn't really hold water if pre-orders are being offered? To me, a pre-order implies that the product is already done although I am sure that things aren't as clear cut as that?
@iansutton74168 ай бұрын
Agreed - and if it is classified as such, it would be a positive development for consumers. Indeed arguably it could be argued as deceptive marketing to call it pre-order, then try to duck out out consumer rights in the small print. In the UK the courts now take a dim view of such attempts (much wider than boardgames).

This is why companies use crowdfunding. T's&C's state this clearly: Crowdfunding is not selling and buying. It is giving someone money. The receiver has no obligation other that the one they will hold themselves to.

As a Peterson backer I appreciate that they are not going down the Mythic or Blacklist road. If they have a business partner who wants to ship us a gift ahead of our game that's cool. I get the sense that someday we'll get our games so this is still better than other projects. On the pre-order front I guess I don't see the issue. CMON has used Backerkit before for their pre-orders so this is just a different vendor. Also, guessing that the exclusivity deal lessened their cost not increased them.

Agree as a a multi burned mythic backer, I wouldn't mind getting something vs the assumed nothing i will get. I'd like them to just turn over the stl's and pdfs of the cards and i could just print the crap myself.

Regarding Petersen Games: I agree as well! I have plenty of money on their games. And I btw love their games... Planet Apocalypse, Cthulhu Wars & Evil High Priest are really awesome. I btw received my all-in Cthulhu Wars just a few weeks ago. 😊 I really hope they can turn the boat and get back on track and it never looked better than now in the last 3-4 years.

The problem with all the companies going exclusive...means that at some point the consumer has to be charged more to recoup the costs of the exclusivity deal.

I backed Blacklist Games, Lasting Tales April 2021. With est delivery date May 2022. Still waiting on the 100+ minis and physical rule book. I've honestly gotten involved with so many other games/projects at this point, I have zero enthusiasm for getting this delivered- beyond not getting completely screwed out of my money. It has cost them a Don't Look Back sale and probably a Lunar one too. (They've given updates, so I suspect I will get it some day....)
@paulb24748 ай бұрын
We can only hope that one day it will be delivered, but Im like you still waiting multiple years later.
@dogtags20108 ай бұрын
We ain't ever getting that. I spent 450 pounds/500 dollars on lasting tales kickstarter all in and extras. We get a red.wax every few.months...like imagine if every company that made minis games only received one red wax miniature model every three.months...lol games would take ten years plus to get released. We are never getting lasting tales. Dudes releasing pictures he got years ago one at a time to try and convince those he defrauded that he's still.working on it.

Preorder means I have some legal recourse to get a refund from the publisher if it didn't deliver. And I don't have to pay shipping. However for crowdfunding it is usually down the drain if not delivered because crowdfunding campaign always cover themselves with a disclaimer that it's not a preorder plus I have to wait longer and pay shipping

Project L is my wifes favorite engine builder. She loved Tertis in the late 80's on NES and this was an instant hit. Not sure if we'd get the latest iteration but we'll wait and see.

I am going off KS/crowdfunding in a big way, its just expensive and the part that really grates on me the most is the fulfillment part and the radio silence, plus a whole host of things that I wont go into that is putting me off, of course I look out for stuff that won't make it to the retailers that really interest me.

I am not sure if I completely understand the problem with pre-order. But I honestly don't understand what is it. Can someone explain me what are the implications of being a pre-order and what is the problem with it
@gabdewulf8 ай бұрын
Which would be fine in the sense of: 1) the game is done and the rules are known 2) maybe not have to wait 4+ years to get what you ordered

If you still thought GF was here for consumers, think again. What's the difference between pre-order and crowdfunding? Who knows at this point, probably a worse deal. But hey, you might actually get your game within a year instead of 3

Gamefound is becoming the Amazon of boardgaming. They are not consumer-first, they are a multi-million dollar business that pretends to put gamers first.

Just another reason I am so glad I do not do crowdfunding anymore. I just got tired of waiting 4 years for a game that I didn't care about anymore by the time it arrived. I would much rather support my local game shop.

The problem with Onimaru isn't only Onimaru its Manchukuo. Manchukuo was assembled, shrinked, boxed, and palleted ready to go. And its been about a year in that state "waiting" for Onimaru to complete such that they can be shipped together. Seriously Manchukuo has been sitting where for how long? What kind of Toxic Black Mold heap of garbage are Manchukuo backers going to receive (or are these finished games actually stored in a climate controlled warehouse?). If these are climate controlled warehouses how on earth can Long Pack Games afford this storage space for Manchukuo without passing them on to P&P? P&P should have requested an additional shipping round of funding as soon as the games were ready to ship out? Regarding crowdfunding platforms, pre-orders should receive a normal credit card chargeback support like ANY other retail sale order system outside of crowdfunding but of course they don't as you pointed out so does that means they were false advertising?

Whoopdy doo about Serious Poulp being Kickstarter exclusive, I'll never give them another cent. Most tedious game I've ever played

What is YOUR definition of a preorder vs what crowdfunding "should be"? You seem to complain about preorder status a lot but have no idea what your complaint actually is because when a game is clearly in development you gripe about no rulebooks or enough information. You either don't know what you want, or you don't know what you're talking about. Which is it?
@hermanturnip39848 ай бұрын
I had to look at my mail to see when I backed Onimaru. January 2019?! Wow. It's gotten to the point where I've completely given up on receiving this game. This project is/was a complete failure. But hey, they *could* get their stuff together and eventually prove me wrong, couldn't they? :rolls eyes:
@arcaderunner21888 ай бұрын
No, Peterson Games said that their benefactor is doing it, so that doesn’t mean PG themselves are “wasting” money.

More drummed-up outrage for clicks. If publishers crowdsource (which is essentially pre-order because 90% of tabletop games deliver) they are "getting a free loan" according to you (bad) if they are financially solvent enough to simply accept funds as a straight-ahead pre-order and are flatly obligated to deliver on the product this is also somehow bad? You gesture "money" and ask "Is it about this?" ...yes. It's not JUST about money but yes, publishers are trying to make money - why is that bad? You raise all of these questions about how it works while also being self-described as a "crowdsourcing expert" while exhibiting little to no practical knowledge about what actually happens behind the scenes of board game publishing or the need for publishers to be nimble and try new things in an industry that (like all other things in this economic climate) have rising costs- you posit a bunch of speculative chatter that just oozes victim mentality and negativity with NOTHING to back it up other than you're rather uninformed approximation of the situation and offer no solutions. Since you've not bothered to respond to any of my other comments, I'll assume this will follow the trend - if you EVER want to talk person-to-person about how this works from the publisher side lmk - This is another entry in a now-established trend of you reigning down bad vibes.
