Gods... I know people like the coffee theory with Azzy's change in character, but the story is better if that isn't the case. I think it's more religious trauma and a toxic parent child relationship. Heaven is giving Azzy a shred of attention and affermation, and he goes running back to it. Because he truly thinks he can change things... Even though we all know it's not going to be worth it in the end...

I agree. As a person with family members who are addicts, one of the worst things on earth is watching someone engage in self-destructive behavior, know they are going to suffer, and being absolutely powerless to avert it.
