It’s the hub on the ac compressor. You can replace that whole hub unit for about $100. It uses the compressor on max ac, norm ac, mix, and defrost. Try it in those 4 modes and I’ll bet money that the only time it rattles.

Run it (for a very short time) with your belt off. I suspect that your A/C clutch hub and pulley are bad. If the noise goes away that's what it is (or another accessory drive bearing). If you let it go too long it will damage the compressor itself and not just the clutch, hub, and field coil. I am currently putting back together my Vic that had worn tensioner guides to the point that the steal tensioners got grounded by the chain. So I had to remove the oil pan to clean the oil pickup tube and I also replaced the oil pump. I watched your other videos about the intake and valve cover. Years ago I replaced my intake manifold and both valve covers in one shot on my 300k mile Town Car, it was easy. I did jack the engine to do the covers but not much, did it all in one day. However with my Vic the previous owner only did the intake. I recommend doing intake and covers in one shot and inspecting the chain for play when the covers are off. The slack and play is very obvious with the covers off if you know to check it. With my Vic I had no reason to pull the intake but I am now struggling to get the covers back in and find it much harder. Good luck to you.

I replaced timing chain tensioners took about 3 days in the freezing cold for no reason. The problem was the AC pulley it locked up finally and snapped the belt. Luckly I just pulled one off a box in the junk yard the day before so I replaced it on the spot.

@@MegaBobson123 We got ours done the day after I post here. Covers went in easy all of a sudden. Funny how some rest can make things fall together. Anyways we had the motor jacked up because we pulled the pan. The passenger side cover went in easy after reattaching the LH mount and tilting the engine instead of having the motor completely raised. The Drivers side cover only needed the coil packs removed and I turned the injectors so the connectors did not stick out. No removal of fenders, brake boosters or any of the other stuff I have seen. My son just bought this car and I told him we should have done a video as this repair was more intensive than what I have seen other people do. (related to timing failure) But he was uninterested. The amount of damage and the amount of repair needed surprised me as the motor only made a very light rattle noise. Despite this chunks of aluminum on the timing arms were gone and debris throughout the engine. We removed the pan, cleaned up the pickup tube that was getting restricted. Unfortunately after everything was done I noticed the oil pickup tube is too close to the pan by using a bore scope. (lesson learned, check this before completely reassembling lol) I ordered a new tube. The car runs fine with good oil pressure but I figured we will replace the tube after about a week of driving. This will give time for the old tube to catch any chunks I may have missed still lurking in the engine. Anyways I mention these things to help other people out and so they don't make the same mistakes that I made. Happy to see you got yours figured out. Doing it in the cold must have sucked.

Its 100% the ac compressor pulley100%. The same thing happened to my p71 2002 crown vic and it ended up being the bearings going out and then the magneto that engages the pulley got destroyed and seized up an snapped the serpentine belt in half. It's a 100$ fix for the magneto and the pulley and it will fix ur problem guaranteed.

Your right. Thats exactly what happened. Wish I would've figured that out before replacing timing chain guides and tensioners. 😒

Its not bad at all, i did it in a few hours or less, thats with running to ford to pickup a new timing cover/gaskets. good for another 100,000. I wouldnt drive it like that, plastic getting into the oil pickup or other places. its probably rattling when there is tension.

@@MegaBobson123 losen the valve covers in the front just enough to get clearance for the timeing cover to pull out. Oil up a little on top of the timing cover sides. So it helps it slide under without messing up the valve cover gasket. I was able to do it without removing the valve covers.

Quick question do I need to remove the power steering pump or just the pulley to get the timing cover off

Good luck I got a 2002 Ford Explorer Eddie Bauer with the 4.6 in it I was having a very similar problem like yours with rattling under the valve cover had it for months until I fine the problem it was a PCV valve rattling why it’s idling witch it’s a big relief cause I heard the 4.6 had issues with timing chain guide breaking try to look at your PCV valve but again it can be anything rattling good luck bud

I was going to say it sounds like the AC compressor.. Heat or AC when you put on the defroster the AC compressor kicks in.. How much was the AC compressor, because i suspect that mine is on it's way out..
