Thank you for the thorough walkthrough! My 1976 Fleetwood comes out of storage in May, going to be going through your vids for: Timing chain, Gas Tank, and more. Thank you for all your work!

Glad you are feeling better ..... I few more degrees of initial timing is a good idea ... If you get ping at Cruse that vacuum advance is adjustable and you can use the allen wrench and reduce cruise-only timing .... Also I like you choice of relay as if you really had to secure the car you could pull the fuse so it will not start

Pulled an HEI reman distributor out of a 78 with a 425. Gonna retro fit it on my 70 coupe. Needed ideas for the wiring. Great vid

Found the relay over on the 472 500 FB page. Recommend that group.

Factory HEI will almost not clear the double V-belt from a 70. The setup from impalamansgarage is an aftermarket HEI with small cap, which will fit better.

If you replace the o rings on the r12 system, you can run propane as the gas. It's what's inside of those cans they sell for r12 replacement gas. With that said if you rebuild the system with a proper modern compressor it will be much more efficient, although I heard you need a larger front condenser for it to be effective.

So question. Did the relay work out after all? I have the same one and did the exact same thing your doing and it had run on issues. I could pull the key out of the ignition anf it will still continue to run because the relay would not de-latch
@ImpalamansGarage Жыл бұрын
I copied this setup from what you shared in the group Robert! Works perfectly!😁 Appreciate the tip. I will keep an eye on that.
@robertshaw5914 Жыл бұрын
@@ImpalamansGarage ha that's great! Maybe the fact I tried to run my relay above the coil instead of off to the side of a fender to keep heat soak at a minimum may help. If in fact you do get run on just pop the hood and pull the relay fuse.

Did the upgraded ignition require any change in spark plugs? Different plugs or different plug gap?
@ImpalamansGarage4 күн бұрын
I bought new plug wires from CRT Performance, the same company that makes the new distributor. They are not expensive. For plugs just take your pick but they need to be suitable for HEI ignition. Pick a plug that is recommended for a late 70s Cadillac for example.

Great video ... I learned a few things I did not know even after messing with vehicles for 45 years. Wouldn't it have been easier, and neater, to just run a switched 12V power source directly to the + on the coil ? No relay, and a lot less wire.
@ImpalamansGarage Жыл бұрын
I am using switched power. I'm using the resistor wire as a signal to turn on a relay sending battery voltage to the coil. There is no other suitable switched power readily available in the engine bay. Alternatively one could run switched power from the fuse box through the half-century old firewall bulkhead connector and risk breaking it. That would be an unwise move. All just my opinion of course.

@@ImpalamansGarage It's all good. Your way is totally acceptable, it just seemed like a lot of work. I'm no electrician, but I would also worry about running the relay off a resistor wire of less than 12V. Just FYI, your Caddy videos are super interesting to me as I just picked up a 1970 Eldorado that has been sitting in the desert for 30+ years. ( Arizona ) Got her running and drove her home 100+ plus miles ... Now for the very slow restoration process. I do plan to get rid of the points ... Just deciding on the route you took, or a GM style HEI distributor. I like the stock look of your set up, but I like the performance and super easy to find modules of the HEI. Also looking to pick up a second air cleaner and do your dual snorkel set up ... very cool !

The distributor caps with the brass or copper contact points are better than the ones with aluminum contact points.

Impala man do you have any extra thermostatic choke stoves for these Cadillacs in your stock of parts by chance?

@@ImpalamansGarage Impala man let me ask you something, on your dead cold engine I'm assuming you have the stock stove choke, your choke looks like its shut all the way with some tension on it like if I tried to flip it open a little it would close shut again, how closed is your choke when its dead cold?

I don't know if I'm correct but isn't there a kit for your distributor to make it electric ignition and have stock look to it
@ImpalamansGarage Жыл бұрын
Yes there is. Made by Pertronix. All the other mechanical parts would still be 52 years old however. Gear, bushings, weights, springs, points cam lobe..... all that stuff wears. For an extra $100 I got a new one plus a coil and wires. I did give serious consideration to installing Pertronix.
