Hello i just wanna hay thank you for react so Manu wonderful songs and amazing albums.i'm from argentina and i wanna recomend the álbum "octubre" by Patricio rey y los redondos de ricotta. Also I wanna tell about our music.the Argentine bands especially the first bands la renga patricio rey and the rounds of ricotta and Spinetta made songs in a unique way and most of it has to do with the history that happened in Argentina. There was a horrible time about the military dictatorship where many people were murdered and shot from their families and that affects us a lot to this day. Some songs disguise those horrible moments with words because at that time they prohibited freedom of expression, that is why it had to be revealed in some way. Spinetta and other great bands are well known not only by history but also by how they express it. Greetings i hope more reactions to argentine bands soon!

Hola Jon!

Alas, no, is an ELP copycat. The thing about Crucis is that it created something very original and at the quality level of, for instance, Gentle Giant. Whereas, I must be blunt about it, most of Argentine rock is second-hand merchandise, copycat of British or American bands.

Good stuff as usual, Jonny! Funny enough, I think Abismo terrenal might be my favorite in here just because of the blistering factor that you describe. To me it feels like a very inspired performance in general, really takes you for an ecstatic ride of sorts. Funny enough, the band I think Crucis might feel closest to, given this mid-point between the symphonic excursions and ambitions of Genesis paired with the spacier, bluesier, perhaps 'simpler' composition and arrangement, is Camel. The instrumentals here don't feel like they'd be a world away from the stuff on Mirage for instance. But anyhow, if you want some more symphonic-tending Argentine prog, I'll again shout out Bubu's Anabelas and M.I.A.'s Cornostípicum. Also the first La máquina de hacer pájaros has a bit of a Genesis vibe going for it, might also tickle that fancy a little bit!

Risking a faux pas, I posted a message to Roger Waters in his Facebook page arguing that Crucis is better than Pink Floyd. Waters must have listened to this album, I posted a You Tube link to it, because Waters, the soul of Pink Floyd, responded me with a pink heart: How humble from a celebrity like him!

In addition to Pfm, Bms and Orme, I suggest you Area -International POPular Group, in which the musical ethnic fusion (with Middle Eastern, Greek and Balkan influences) went hand in hand with the internationalism of its explicit left-oriented political profile, with outstanding musical performances and a singer out of category: Demetrio Stratos.

@@fvelazqzu You're right, the same in Argentina in the seventies. And perhaps in both countries, although in different proportions, the same political and economic instability, combined with a restless spirit, of great initial enthusiasm and little sustainability over time. Early arcoiris lp are much jazz-folk, i love it but those in particular los elemantales, in the 80s goes to california and make jazz and folk with great disc but much american sound, very hippies. I love this video, so I will post a little more. Crucis' drummer was the only non-Argentinian in the band, Gonzalo Farrughia from Uruguay. This is very important because for historical reasons African music did not survive in Argentina but instead blossomed in Uruguay. Thus Farrughia has the sense of rhythm that no drummer in Argentina can possibly have, there are no Bill Bruford-Phil Collins in Argentina. I am a big Genesis fan, and compared to Genesis Crucis is the only Argentine band musically at the same level. Spinetta did good things but he had a surrealist personality, his music cannot be compared with Genesis'. García, an amazing keyboard players, lacks the gift of melody, check this, his best concert ever: kzbin.info/www/bejne/romTZ6h4qNiJebs

If I can contradict you, the lyric of the song you mention is an allusion to the Nazi horror Argentina was going through when the album was recorded in 1977: The fascist military in power, particularly the evil Argentine Army, was creating a Gleichschaltung in Argentina by brainwashing the people into believing that a genocide was needed. "No me separen de mi" is a poetically existential meditation, a going-inside, to one's soul, this is to remain centered on one's the inner self instead of succumbing to Nazification. Nazism which destroyed us the people in Argentina until the UK freed us by winning the Falklands War. Relevantly, the album was processed in Miami, USA, thus its impeccable sound. P.S.: I fled Argentina for the US in 1992.
