An actual wartime corvette in this movie. Glad I stumbled on this.

Highly recommend the book of the same name which inspired this film. This scene, unfortunately, pales in comparison to that in the novel, in which the U-boat is forced to the surface and then shot to pieces by Compass Rose while its crew attempt to escape. The intensity of the action is remarkable, coming as a release after the unbearable tension of engine repair chapter.

Just listened to it as an audiobook. A very gritty tale, and well worth seeking out. The horrors and hardships of convoy duty against the U-boat packs were almost unimaginable.

I think the thrill would have hit them from the start, the thrill of the hunt and your duty to king and country…. The reality would sink in right quick about what was happening to that crew and the mood would have got somber right quick

I remember an interview with survivors of the Bismark - who said nobody celebrated the sinking of the Hood. Nobody even smiled - we were sad for the sailors killed, and we knew we were dead men.

Seems about right - this is a quote from the second in command of HMS Conqueror when they sunk the Belgrano during the Falklands War - "The instant reaction was a cheer because we'd done our job professionally, and then within seconds you could have heard a pin drop. "Everyone had their own thoughts about sinking a ship with 1,000 people on board, fellow sailors doing a job that their government had charged them to do.

men did not cheer the sinking of a sub as they knew the horrors of such a death and were also seamen themselves.

@@FrankJmClarke Political correctness was coined in the Soviet Union about 100 years ago. U-boats aren’t that big but a lot of the boats that sunk in WW2 caused the lives of hundreds to over 1000 men to be snuffed at once. It’s shocking to think about when you’re just as vulnerable and there’s plenty reason to react with horror.

My great grandfather was in the royal Australian navy and he said the same thing there was a sort of code of honor to the sea and he once told me of a engagement that crippled both ships one sank and without hesitation the crew of the vendetta D69 saved the remaining Italian crew. Look up the history of the scrap iron flotilla they where a group of 5 world war 1 V class destroyers handed to Australia just before WW2 and by the time the war broke out we didn't have many up to date ships so we sent the 5 WW1 ships to the Mediterranean (prior to Japan entering the war) where we lost the HMAS waterhen nick named chook by the crew in a air raid by something like 17 stukas and then once the war with Japan started they where sent back to defend our waters in witch my old old man told me some crazy story's before he passed away Unfortunately we don't have many ships left in museums from WW1/2 era But we do have a minesweeper Corvette in Melbourne I saw looks very similar to this one but I believe it was Australian built our one The HMAS castlemaine Bathurst class Corvette can't believe how lightly armoured they are. And they went into the open seas blows my mind. The castlemaine from memory had 1 4.7 inch 120mm front cannon 2x 50 cal M2 machine guns (installed after WW2 to replace the British 7.62 lewis mgs) and a single barrel 40mm bofor AA cannon on the back with 1 port side anti sub launcher barrel thing 🤣 2 roller bomb things at the back like seen on this one and a compliment of 15 (what ever Australians version of a navy marine was) for the possibility of needing to board a ship and fight close qauters

If you watch the film “ Sink the Bismarck” the British sailors and Officers did not cheer when the ship went down , the order was given to pick up any survivors.
