I understand she's Cruella and Cruella equals fur but I think it made perfect sense there wasn't any. The plot sets up her descent into villainary, to the point where she disregards morals for fashion. This is a gradual process not immediate and we see hints towards this in the film

@@strifecloud6930 ... What? No they didn't? I mean sure, trauma can happen to anyone, doesn't mean that the story set it up, which was my point from the beginning. You can't say something can change her personality from this movie to the next one (that would make something like skinning puppies realistic to this character), and then say they actually did leave hints or a cliffhanger, because that actually didn't happen. There's nothing in this movie that suggests she is going to become the Cruella of the previous live actions or even the one from the animated movie, period.

The fact that she didn’t wear a fur bothered me. Like that’s what was most impactful about her! I remember watching the original Disney movie cartoon and she had this gigantic coat that almost looked like a mane, it made her look so creepy cause combined with her posture it made her look almost animal like. People being scared of her sending a bad message by wearing fur… she’s literally a villain? Her name is Cruella ffs, why in hell would she be sending a good message? The whole animal rights issue could have been easily solved with synthetic fur. We see guns in movies all the time, I don’t like them I won’t buy one and the ones they use in the movie are fake why can’t the same basic logic be applied with fur as well
@zoeeallyyson3 жыл бұрын
i actually think her not wearing fur was a good addition in way? like i think this was cruella's backstory of how she became how she was and in the animated film she tries to take roger and anita's dogs specifically so i think introducing her without it allowed her characterization to be better and maybe in a sequel she could become darker and don it. does that make sense?

A trapeze dress with a bias cut does mimic an A-line (and is comfortable while still maintaining a tailored look, it’s my favorite summer office go to with a blazer thrown on to push it further towards business and away from casual), but the Baroness should know there is a difference between the two of she’s claiming to be a classically educated fashion designer. I do have designer friends who wouldn’t know the difference between a trapeze cut and an a-line, but they’re self taught and it’s not like a lot of the fashion terminology for cuts and styles is part of the normal high school coursework.
@MintyAndee3 жыл бұрын
An a-line can have a minimal waist in the cut while a trapeze will just go straight from the shoulders and tends to have a more voluminous skirt. A-lines can lean on tailoring to give it shape while a trapeze cut leans on fabric type or manipulation to give it shape (jersey and bias cuts being particularly dominant). I think you could argue a trapeze cut is a type of a-line, but not all a-lines are trapeze cuts.

They just kept throwing in stuff like her mum dying and her real mom wanting to kill her to make her likable and explaining why she's evil and so made her too relatable. On top of that her acting evil just was cringey because you know the movie isn’t on the side of being evil. This is why Disney sucks at making villain movies, they’re so used to making good guy/girl movies that they fail the villain movies.
@lol-ot4pn3 жыл бұрын
They dont suck at making villain movies. Its just not what people “prefer” nor is it what THEY want to make. The main reason shes evil is because she has blood of someone “evil”. Not because her mother died and her real mother wanting to kill her. At the end of the movie no one with a half decent brain thinks cruella is someone nice and good and relatable. “Antihero” is and always will be a better route when making a good story about someone who mostly has a “negative” personality. Because villainy like serial killers, psychopaths, animal cruelty made for the sake of villainy is boring storytelling wise.
@mattymariah3 жыл бұрын
People aren’t born villains. Seem you don’t understand this. Most times people become evil because of trauma - much like shown in Cruella. Nothing wrong with humanizing female “villains.” You’re viewing evil as so binary, which it’s so not. It’s incredibly nuanced. Plus, this video is about fashion which this film *KILLED* Also, spoilers much? Lots of people haven’t seen this yet.
@mattymariah3 жыл бұрын
And the last movie this director directed was I, Tonya, which is about humanizing someone the public much made into a villain when the truth was much more complicated.

I'm not a fashion or textiles expert but I do know art and making . fashion is an art form and here it is used expertly to show the motives of the characters and it reflects that. The same way an actor conveys a charters motives through body posture, voice tone projection ect. This is used here as well and is very well done.

The military jacket was also a huge motif of the punk music movement - very much a repurposing and reclaiming of a symbol of authority. It’s also symbolic for Cruella in her almost Napoleonic conquering of the position of it girl.

I love that you talked about Charles James and his legacy. If you are really interested in a movie about fashion, you should definitely check out 'Phantom Thread' where THE Daniel Day Lewis plays a fashion designer loosely based on Charles James. A video on the movie and the Charles James-isms of it's fashions would be sublime.

This video is amazing!! You put so much work into research!! I am a true Londoner and can confirm alot of your great facts!! I feel that the idea of Cruella not being attracted to much more modern "trendy" age appropriate brand's such as BIBA But to Liberty is a nod at how she is not a trend follower but more of an individual. Liberty London just like cruella was always true to their own designs and prints but still being contemporary!! I also feel like the Baroness not using the correct vocabulary was emphasizing how she was not at all fashion genius beacuse she was stealing her employee's designs!! So it was more like a snub to her character...

My favorite costume was the ‘Garbage’ dress. Jenny said it was supposed to be a dress made from the Baroness’s past collections with news papers focusing on Cruella upstaging the Baroness. This was to say that the Baroness was garbage and yesterday’s news. I’m not a fashion history buff, I barely passed my Survey of Historic Costume class in college. I enjoy more the creativity and work of making wearable art. I do view clothing more as art than functional and I love how this movie highlights that. “I consider normal the cruelest insult.” Is one of the best lines in the film.

Cruella has a unique skill to tailor and design clothes, so i think it's somewhat believable that she could make the punk rock look to her taste, or even couture. She has a mixed fashion interest considering she also like classic couture shown in the last moment in the movie.
