I was too young to realize just how INCREDIBLE Glenn Close is in this role when I first saw it. She takes Disney’s most evilly-intended villain-a woman whose goal is to kill puppies-and makes her human, relatable, powerful, and hilarious. Every touch is brilliant: the way she’s so imperial that even taking a drawing from someone a foot away is “beneath” her (and she shows her compassion for Anita by not asking HER to do the work either-that’s an assistant’s job!), her genuine praise for Anita’s creativity and talent (Cruella’s been in the game a long time, and she knows what a good designer looks like), and even her borderline fetishistic reading of “I WORSHIP furs” (the animated version seems more like she’s quipping, but Close seems genuinely obsessed with fur to an mentally unhealthy degree). Pure talent in every line. This is an ACTRESS.

2:14. Notice the pencil marks that Cruella drew on the drawing. While Anita’s pencil marks are fine and very precise and elegant. True, and undestandable. Disney aimed for a differnt direction this time. I enjoyed Cruella by Emma Stone very much, but it’s essentially still turning an iconic villain into an easy to relate anti-hero that can be redeemed like Disney had done with Maleficent. Glenn’s performance is also more dramatic, more over the top as if she’s on a stage to represent more than just a character, an ideal even. Emma’s performance fits more with today’s standard, more natural which led to a more relatable character, but it’s hard to see her as “Cruella” when you took away all those evil intents.

@@Ella_bellacoconut I know that this comment is a week old, but the idea is that, for a lot of women, even now, they are usually expected to get married and have kids with their careers taking a backseat to family life. Not as much now as it was back then, but still enough that a career woman of a certain age with no marital ties raises a few eyebrows. So what Cruella means is that a lot of women, either by their own choice or because of pressure (usually in the form of their husbands, society, or both), give up their careers after they get married and let their husbands be the new breadwinner. Especially since, even now, men tend to feel insecure if their wives either make more money than them, or are the primary breadwinners.

0:51 is such an amazing line & I love how they give it to a villain. It just makes her so much more iconic & memorable that every time I hear of anything 101 Dalmatians related the first character I think of is Cruella. She's one of my most favorite Disney Villains. Cruella De Vile & the latest movie they had about her is actually one of the big reasons I'm going into fashion after highschool. I loved her iconic line from the old movie, although I won't exactly be following it's principle.
