When I cruised for over 7 days, we did a "boarding school wash" in the cabin bathroom sink. We washed underwear, sox & bra's and hung them to dry on the line in the shower. Somethings took longer to dry and had to be "moved" for showers. We washed "daily", as there was no free laundry or passenger laundromats to use. Once I was ELITE, I stopped doing that on Princess cruises. I pack "laundry soap sheets" and "dryer sheets" in small ziplocks and do a load twice a week of my items I don't want to send to have done by the ship. Otherwise, I send a bag EVERY day during a cruise with garments, so something is always coming back. I pack about 1 weeks worth of garments. Things I wear to "dress up for dinner" can often be reworn, just hung up to air out overnight, hit it with a little "wrinkle release spray" which will freshen them as well. I heard that particular ship was because they don't have a large enough holding tank for grey water to do an abundance of laundry when in port for more than 36 hours. They are not allowed to overboard the recycled water until they are well at sea away from the port. The water they do overboard is treated and is clean.

I am currently on the Majestic ….along with 1,000 other passengers who boarded in Los Angeles on December 1 for a 51 day b2b2b cruise ending in FLL…and several hundred more who boarded at the start of The second segment for a b2b cruise of 30+ days. We have all been on much longer 4 days! It was explained to us, whether actually the reason or not, that the ship must be out in ocean waterways to create potable water. The Majestic came into the port of Montevideo Uruguay on January 1. This port is located on an waterway (river) not the ocean. We then went to Buenos Aires next day for 2 days which is located across from Montevideo on the same river. The 3rd segment of the 51 day trip began in Buenos Aires so the ship returned to Montevideo on January 4 so the passengers who had boarded on segment 3 could visit that port. So for 4 days the ship remained on a waterway that was not conducive to the ship making water…for whatever reason…the passenger DIY laundrettes remained open as usual and we did not notice any reduction in availability of clean towels, etc.

I always travel light on PRINCESS, take detergent sheets, dryer sheets, and buy a few tokens to do my own laundry. I usually do my laundry on port call days. Works like a charm!

I rather do my laundry in their laundromat than use the service but not always possible. I was on Sapphire Princess in 2023 and the laundromat was open all 34 days and we also went to BA and Uruguay. The only eco we encountered was in Antartica when no paper coffee cups were allowed and daily planner wasn’t available in paper form. All understandable. Personally I wish all ships had laundromats.

We are on the Majestic Princess, and i think the reason for the suspended laundry service is because of 4 continuous port days where the ship could not produce enough water for that service. The ship needs to be in open water to produce water.

We take laundry sheets, you can break off the amount you need, and it doesn't count as a liquid.

There is one bad thing that can happen with laundry. I was ready to send out laundry nut forgot to do it. That day, I fell in port and had to be medically evacuated. It would have been a real hassle had my laundry had been in process when I left.

Travel tip, buy Merino Wool clothes and skip the laundry. Merino wool can be worn for days on end and not smell.

And if you do take any of the laundry washing pods make sure you put them in a tough container like a reusable water bottle. They make a right mess if burst.

I've always taken laundry sheets on cruises so I can use the laundrette on board or, alternatively, use a Ziplock bag in the bathroom sink to wash the clothes.

There is another thing to check ahead of time for the cruise. Are there any shots required or recommended? We are going on a cruisetour shortly which includes Iguazu Falls in Brazil. It is highly recommended you get the Yellow Fever shot for the area.

Lets hope Holland America doesn't go this path as they dont have laundramats. Flying means one has to pack less. The airlines are cracking down on luggage. We are on our way to Buenos Aires & Montevideo.

AT least HAL offers affordable laundry options (usually $25/ bag outside of Alaska). Celebrity charges $59 per bag of the same size. We did a Solstice-Nieuw Amsterdam-Solstice B2B2B in Alaska and we made sure that everything was washed on NA.

I normally do my own laundry. Grateful, that Princess ship has this amenity. Some Carnival ships and I know some Hollander ships have this also. Great update.

We were on the Sapphire Princess on a 35-day cruise in November and December 2024 to South America and Antartica, which included Montevideo and Buenos Aries, with no problems with the laundry service. Strange it is popping up now.

Thanks for your laundry tips. In my 43 cruises on Princess I’ve never experienced any problems but as, Allison has said times can be changing. I’ll be on the Discovery Princess to Medico on February 1, 2025 so as an Elite member I’ll be interested to see what happens.

We did an Amazon river cruise last year on HAL and were notified in advance that we were going to have to conserve water while on the river and that meant no laundry service for most. It was also advised that we use towels more than once and that showers not be too long. Best cruise ever!

well, at least the Majestic has the option for do-it-yourself laundry - and really, how "dirty" do our clothes get that we need to wash them? Mostly, we wash just to "refresh", not out of need. Smalls are easy enough to wash in the stateroom. -

I think that laundry situation was more or less a one off. I would expect it is not the norm and can't get worried about it. Always rinse out underwear and never send it anyway.

That was not the point. The point was it happened and to be prepared. Some people may have planned to wash clothes. They may have been traveling prior to the cruise and was depending on laundry service once onboard. Additionally, Allison provided updates for a few other issues.

A good number of cruisers take several cruises in a row and may need clothes early in the cruise as I have.
