Cruising out of MCT in 2 weeks on NCL Joy. We always use Dial 7 car service, whether on a cruise or just vising the city. Clean cars, nice drivers and around $70 from any airport in the area. We use them going from the port to the airport after the cruise too. Very reliable option to a cab, uber or shuttle.

With scheduling our cruise, we found out that December is one of the most expensive times to stay in New York. $1600 for 2 nights after taxes and resort fees at the Hilton Midtown. There is nothing really under $400 a night before taxes and resort fees in midtown that we wanted to stay at. It sounds like it is much cheaper at other times though. But, this is a bucket list cruise for us and we booked everything as soon as it came available. Great content on this, and thank you Sharon for all the help on booking!

Living here in Brooklyn all my life, the convenience of the subway system cannot be overstated. Yes, it has gotten a bad rap recently (and deservedly so) and there are many precautions to take-no matter where you are going: don't look at other people, mind your own business, don't flash your cash or credit cards or jewelry, put your phone away or hold it close, offer your seat to a pregnant person, the disabled or elderly, and, the most important of all, pay attention to what's going on around you. Don't stand near the edge of the train platform waiting for the train to pull in. If you're not comfortable being on a particular subway car, wait until the train stops at the next station and switch cars! The NYC subway system covers all of Manhattan and the outer boroughs, which makes it the best mode of getting around and the least expensive. Let's not forget about the buses, too. Be careful and alert and you will thank me. Enjoy!!!
@ajs112016 ай бұрын
I agree that NYC has some of the best public transportation options in the country, and I use it all the time. Your advice is spot-on. That said, when cruising, using a subway/bus combo might be daunting for an out-of-towner who must navigate a complex system while managing a half dozen suitcases. My suggestion is to arrive in NYC a day or two before the cruise, take a taxi or car service from the airport to the hotel. Use the subway and buses while touring the area, and then take another taxi or car service to the cruise port on the day of the cruise. I only say that because cruising usually requires a bit of luggage that may be awkward on a city bus.

Being from Central Jersey, we love sailing from Cape Liberty and it takes our daughter only a bit over an hour to get us to embarkation. We have been out of Manhattan and Brooklyn as well and definitely agree that the sailaways are breath taking. Last year out of Bayonne on the Celebrity Summit to Bermuda, the ship did a sail by the Statue of Liberty and turn around near Ellis Island with a second look at Lady Liberty from the starboard side. The Manhattan skyline, Governors Island, and the Verrazzano Bridge with a NYFD fireboat spray were all a part of a jaw dropping sailaway! Super video Jamie! 👍☺

Royal and Celebrity cruisers , this tip is for you. Even though some sites say you will sail from NY, know that you’ll sail only from NJ port. To get to that port from New York City is a very long and expensive ride due to need to cross two expensive bridges and leave the city to go through Staten Island (aka traffic, and god forbid there’s marathon or accident on the bridge). . Therefore, if you are flying, I highly recommend flying only to Newark -EWR in NJ. The port City is called Bayonne, but the port itself is called Cape Liberty, and I’ve seen confusion everywhere because of this especially since some sites show this as NY port.

Last cruise out of Manhattan Cruise Terminal, we drove in from our hotel stay in NJ. I had to "guess" if I wanted the GW Bridge upper or lower deck. I chose correctly with "lower deck". I then was stuck in the left lane knowing I had to go South to the cruise port, I was lucky because the far left lane IS THE EXIT to go south to the cruise terminal. So take lower deck, get in left lane, and you'll be all set. I lucked out, but it would have been great to know ahead of time!

One option you also might consider (particularly if you are within driving distance) is using the commuter rail systems (north or south) to park outside NY city. I agree. New York has some of the best public transportation in the country. That said, there are no subways that get you close enough to the cruise terminals to be helpful, so you'd need to transfer to a bus to finish the trip. While the transfer is free and the total fare is just under $3 per person, I wouldn't want to hassle with four suitcases on a NYC bus. For myself, I'd just take a taxi/car service and be done with it.

I am from NJ. If you are cruising from Cape Liberty, Bayonne NJ , Newark airport is your best option as it is 10 miles from the port and on the same side of the Hudson River as the port. No tunnel traffic to deal with. In terms of hotels I would recommend the Newark Airport Hotels for an overnight option. If you intend to tour Manhattan, you might consider the financial district of Jersey City. It has great views of Manhattan across the Hudson River and easy access to the Path Train or ferry to access NYC for just a few dollars and in just a few minutes. The train takes you directly to the World Trade Center site, or it has options to midtown Manhattan at 33rd Street. Uber to the port from this location. I have found the port to be well organized with views of the Statue of Liberty.

If you are sailing out of Bayonne, flying to JFK or LGA is an absolute PITA - they are not convenient at all. Not to mention the cost of tolls/transport with crossing the state line. Manhattan itself can be a pain. The traffic is absolutely ridiculous at times. It once took me 2 hours to get from MOMA to Chinatown driving the West Side HWY - which is where the port is. I'm from Queens and now live in NJ and avoid Manhattan whenever possible. I recommend flying into Newark and then take a PATH train or ferry to Manhattan. For the Brooklyn terminal, JFK is best, but LGA will work too, although it is considered one of the worst airports of all. Whatever you do, it is not feasible to rent a car. On top of the rental fees, there are parking and tolls everywhere.

The views on the ferry will be spectacular and a nice addition to the next photos you'll get from the cruise ship as she leaves the harbor.

@ajs112015 ай бұрын
@@teresamotz That makes sense, and that's the kind of calculations New Yorkers make on a regular basis. For example, when deciding whether to fly from EWR, LGA, or JFK, part of the equation includes things like which airline ticket is cheaper, and how much will the ground transportation cost to each respective airport. It's often the case that it's more economical overall to fly with the more expensive airline ticket because you can save more than that cost difference on the ground transport. It sounds like you've done the same calculation with your cruise terminal parking--hiring two or three cars to transport 7 people is far more than a week's parking bill.
