As an avid cruiser, this is more common than people think! When you sign on, you are giving them, the cruise line the right to amend your itinerary and/or miss ports without probable compensation.

Which totally makes sense. At the end of the day, if there's a huge storm where you're supposed to be going when you're supposed to be going there, there's only so much a cruise line can do. With that said, when it happens to you... Imagine planning a cruise a year in advance. It's going to be 34F where you live. You're sick and tired of the cold weather, but you're going to get 14 days of sunny Bahamas weather to recharge you. Instead, you're forced to go to Boston, then Canada? Yuck! I probably wouldn't leave the ship and at least stay within the warmth of it. The one thing I WILL say is, however, it would have been nice if they could at least travel to warmer climates so that you could at least use the pool and go out on the balcony in your bathing suit.

Not in the EU actually. There they're still allowed to reserve the right of itinerary changes, but the customer has right for free cancellation (if done before departure) and/or compensation if the still sail or it happens only after the start of the cruise. That's something US customers should get more angry about.

I can totally understand that the plans might change. But it would be like booking a timeshare in Florida during hurricane season, and running into the problem where a hurricane does roll through. It's happened before. I've been down there in FL. You learn to make the best out of the vacation. But for sure the people I've seen online that were signed into this cruise, they actually were offered the option to cancel, and some took up that offer, and booked flights to Aruba and other very warm destinations. Smaller parties have that option to find seats on flights that are more than booked up, at a more cost effective price, and lodging accommodations, etc.

That was my thought. And I get it, the bad weather was traveling all up the path of where they were supposed to go. However, at the very minimum, they should have gone south east. Yes, they'd be in the middle of the ocean, probably off the coast of Bermuda and wouldn't be able to dock anywhere, but they'd be in warmer temps, which would allow everyone to use the pool and walk around on the deck in their bathing suit. People that take a cruise to the Bahamas in December are trying to escape the cold, not pay good money to go into more cold! I would have taken a rain check. No way I'm going to Canada in December!

Exactly. I think anyone can wrap their head around cruise lines adjusting their itineraires, as long as the replacement is comparable. Even if they cancel a planned stop, you're more or less still getting the cruising experience you signed up for if you're in the region of the world you planned on going. But changing from a tropical climate in December to a cold weather one is completely changing the dynamics of what the passengers signed up for, small print or not. The only cold weather cruises that anyone willingly wants to go on are the Artic ones where the unique environment is the main attraction. There's a reason that you probably won't find Boston as a port on any cruise ANY TIME OF YEAR! Hopefully those passengers who wanted to were able to cancel without penalty.

Why cruise then? What a waste of money. I just got back from Bali. 5 weeks vacation all in cost $4k CAD (this includes the flight cost) and I had a private pool and gorgeous house on the ocean. I ate like a king SO cheap! Food I’d pay $35/plate in Canada only cost $3 there. Why do people cruise? I got to do whatever I wanted when I wanted. Why do people cruise? I had FULL control over my vacation. Why do people cruise? People cruise because they are terrified of foreign lands and cultures and need the safety blanket of everyone speaking English. If the crew had still made the decision to go through with the original itinerary and something went wrong due to weather, this news broadcast would be a totally different story blaming the cruise line for not considering the safety of passengers. Honestly, just be thankful that your family and you were safe. They made the right call rather than putting you all in danger way out in the middle of the below freezing sea during a storm. I live in Maine! While you guys were docked in Boston safely in warm beds thousands of us were with no power in the frigid cold for days!!! Our rivers also flooded us and many lost their vehicles and homes right before Christmas. Most of us lost hundreds of dollars worth of food in our fridge n freezers. Never mind having money to go on a cruise for Christmas…… a lot of people here had no money to get new gifts for their families from all of their gifts and Christmas trees being underwater. I’d be thanking the cruise line for keeping you all safe during that awful storm. Cannot imagine what it looked like out in the Atlantic considering here in land it was very destructive!! Not only all of this but think of the residents in Portland Maine when they see a cruise ship dock lit right up and has heat considering 67,000 people in Portland’s county were without power at that time and over 400,000 in our state were without power For days and some for over a week! Where did this cruise ship depart from to begin with?

One thing MSC makes extremely clear, and not even in fine print is that they are not responsible if the itinerary changes. I will be on this ship Feb 4th and would not be happy but know if it changes they have a good reason. If they did cancel due to weather, everyone would say "why not just reroute". Or if they went into dangerous waters and something bad happened people would say "they should have known better". How does the MSC win in this situation??

Much chillier than expected, but I made the best of it by taking the chance to explore NYC and go see the Rockettes. The water was rocky enough crossing the Atlantic Ocean... glad to miss a storm.

We sailed on this ship last month, after we checked in we were given a new itinerary, we were supposed to go to Bermuda instead we went to cape Canaveral for 8 rainy hours then Nassau for 7 hours. There were a couple of very rough weather days.

Note to self don’t cruise on MSC, they should have offered a refund not a cruise credit
@SupportSquirrel
@SupportSquirrel 8 ай бұрын
These things happen during cruising BUT the cruiseline did reimburse. Now try that on a flight and doing your own vacation - reimbursement will be hard or near impossible. That's why I love cruises, because the cruise insurance is cheap and they are really good with reimbursing. Miss a port? Those fees are refunded and usually they try to make it right. Really bad weather? They start to offer future cruise credits.

There was a stationary front so the weather was horrible down here. Windy, rainy and extremely rough seas. Better safe than miserable and sea sick 🤢. We’ll see you next time.

So, personally, I'm not sure I would book a cruise that doesn't depart from a routinely warm port. When the itinerary changes, your chances of being diverted to another warm destination will be much higher.

This has happened before. Cruises are booked but then a storm or hurricane comes along. And the ship has to divert. Usually coming up here to the north. The storm they avoided is blowing through here now. Wind and rain and snow. I'd rather be calm and avoid a storm.

Cruises actually do prioritize safety over everything else. If the sea is too rough, they won't go. If someone gets seriously injured or sick on board, they'll get them help no matter what. I was just on a cruise where we turned the whole ship around, went in the opposite direction for the better part of a day so we could get in range of a US Coast guard helicopter so a passenger having a medical emergency could be taken to the hospital. They'll drop EVERYTHING if someone, not just on your ship but on another nearby ship, goes overboard and search for them for, like 10+ hours. They are serious about this kind of stuff and they don't really apologize for that.

They were all offered a 100% cruise credit. Had they gone south, they would have spent the days puking, and not going to any ports anyway. A bad day on vacation is better than a great day at work. To Today host, if you have cruised, you know cruise lines have this option.

Disagree.. They were offered 100% cruise credit but we all spend a lot more than just what the cruise cost us, to travel, to take that time off for work. Hotel pre-cruise so it's not 100% back.. More like 60% back

Correction, YOU know but the average cruiser is not a serial cruiser like you. Most go on one or two in their life and are just casual cruisers seeing it for a more affordable and simple option. Most people do not know these clauses exist. People need to remember, what may be common to you, isn’t always common to someone else

I'm an annual crusier, and unfortunately that's part of the culture! Actually they lucked out because I'm in FB Cruising groups, and many of the members were already on ships that were stuck in that bad weather that week, and all they could do was stay on the ships and not port anywhere! Many said the ships were rocking! I've experienced 1 day of that last year, when the weather changed quickly, and we could not dock in Binimi Bahamas! We did get $100 back in cruise credits, that voyage. You can buy anything you want with the credits on the ship, and I think you can use toward a future cruise cost. Actually I prefer the ships over ports anyway....😂 I think that MSC cruise gave full or partial cruise credits for another one! One of my friends had just returned back from a Bahama cruise the week before. They had just missed the bad weather. In some ships you have to walk outside to goto the buffet dining room, so I'm sure most of the passengers had pack only summer clothes, so I be that may have been uncomfortable in Boston, and surrounding NorthEast areas....😮

Passengers: please address your concerns to God. In all seriousness, there's been a flood of new cruise passengers who really don't understand what they're getting into. (I've only taken a few cruises, but was offered a free Bermuda cruise from NYC and turned it down because it was in January - yes, it's to Bermuda, but mid-winter Northeastern US is at both ends! (Hint: you're gonna need those winter jackets for part of the cruise to begin with, no matter what!) And it IS common - very common. Before you go on a cruise, make sure you're going to enjoy being on the ship just as much as going to the destination.
