After being in the U.S. Navy for 20 years and spending 4 years on a ship… You will never find me taking a cruise vacation! But one of my biggest hates is that I find cruises to be worthless, floating cesspools of E. Coli. People are gross (but wherever you are), but being stuck in a tuna can with thousands of other travelers, it’s a hard pass for me. I’m the type of person that likes to spend time (lists of time) exploring a place not just stop for a few hours. The only exception I have are river cruises. The Nile River cruise I took in 2023 was quite nice.

@@RoyalCaribbeanBlog I'm good. I don't like group tours for one (big group tours). I prefer a group tour of less than 10 people. Being on a boat is like a big group tour. Again, I don't like how the ships stop at places for a few hours. My friend met me in Mazatlan while I spent 2 weeks there and her ship came in and we met up, but they were only in port for like a couple of hours. So, it's still going to be a "no" for me.

I am on Oddysey right now. I have seen a few disgusting things in Windjammer. The worst are people who pick items out of a food serving containers with their hands. Don't even get me started about parents who encourage their kids to run around in Windjammer as they look at their phones. Room stewards are the hardest workers. Give them a little money on the first day, then more on your last night. Take care of them and they will take care of you.

What I do is take a couple of those plastic lids, flip them over, line them with napkins/serviettes, put a plate inside and pile on the food. This really works. You can load the “tray” with almost anything and it makes it much easier to take back to your room. You’re welcome!!! 👍🏻🍽️

I agree-it's also kind of like ragging on someone who's clearly got a mobility issue without considering that it's probably a lot of effort to get around and cruise ship stuff with people in a wheelchair/scooter. Have to ding you regarding the Scooter man. I’m also forced to use a scooter, as well as having other problems, due to head-on with drunk driver in 1993 at age 50! I prefer to eat in privacy, since sometimes my “aim” goes awry! To facilitate my life, I bought a wire basket (Pride Company) which fits on the back of my scooter, which gives room for groceries, or lunch plates, coats, etc. I encourage everyone to adapt the “rollers” to fit their needs, no matter where they’re going!

I know a lot of people love this navy lark, but to me it's just like the old 'Butlins Holiday Camp' surrounded by nothing but water. No other view to look at for days and herded around various pre planned attractions usually manned by the already overworked crew. Eventually it will dock somewhere and you will get the opportunity to take in the entire culture of that place in just a few hours. How exciting is that? Travel these days, no matter what your preference, is stressful. I am so glad I travelled when it was a pleasure. Now I just find picturesque and historical places of interest around Britain where I can check in and out at will just a few hours drive from home.

For the pillow on the connecting door... It's not for noise, it's a security thing. The person in the room is probably a little unsure about how secure that door is. If the door is opened, the pillow falls and cannot be put back whilst the door is open. I'm not saying it's the best solution but it's creative and if you've had a really bad experience in the past, I can see why someone would feel safer with something like this.

To be fair with the tupperware, I can *kind* of understand. I have Autism and have issues with my different foods I pick out touching, so I have a tray I bring with me that has sections to it to help when going to the buffet. I don't mind washing it in my stateroom sink or getting the odd dirty/confused look (I have a travel bottle of dawn soap I pack.) I've actually gotten more positive compliments and/or saying it's a good idea over negatives. Yeah, use clean plates to acquire the food, take it to a table, then put it in a storage container I guess. It’s buffet food, nothing I’ve experienced in the Windjammer is mind blowing, go home and head to Golden Corral lol. BUT if you, like me travel with someone dealing with a physical limitation I can see wanting to bring food back to my cabin, I get worn out sometimes, if we are eating together, I often get his food first, bring it to the table, then go back thru the buffet for my own food, so by the time I get back, his food is starting to get cold, or he is 1/2 way done with his meal, so being able to make “to go” food to take to the cabin would be nice, then we can eat together.

Cruised to AK last year and was not thrilled with the food...at all. Took to a social media page that wasn't owned by the cruise line: just a regular info page. Posted my complaints, and compliments, but more complaints by far. About an hour later, I got a call in my stateroom from the food services director herself. Said she had read my comments (truth!) and wanted the opportunity to discuss them with me. Say what?? Told her that was ok but I was just disappointed with the selection. Thought the matter was solved. Nope. I'm sitting in a viewing area in Port but because it was pouring rain and I had caught a cold, we stayed on the ship. Up walks this director and the head chef...jacket, hat and all! They tracked me down on that ship via my medallion and wanted to offer us a meal at their steakhouse. I refused and said that wasn't necessary...but they insisted. Drinks, meal , everything was to be covered. Honestly, that was some of the best food I had ever eaten. Had lobster but because I'm a slow eater, the Host (very attentive) had our plates cleared for the next course after I had only eaten ONE bite! I really didn't know what to say. Overall that food was impeccable. Moral of the story: some cruiselines DO monitor social media outlets, even when they aren't their own, to get feedback. After that, I amended my comment with the updated information.

I have to disagree with the assessment of the gentleman in the wheelchair. The idea that it is over engineered is a rather ableist mindset. Someone in a wheelchair (not necessarily a scooter with a basket) can't carry a stack of plates. And those lids so not seal.

I don't cruise but, I do use a scooter when in Disney World. And, I it can be challenging to carry dishes of food while using a scooter as the baskets are too small to easily hold dishes, covered or not, of food. At Disney you get a tray (think large plastic cafeteria tray)and those trays and anything on them slides around when the scooter is moving making quite challenging to transport your food to a table. My solution has been a smaller tray from Amazon that has a grippy silicone/rubber grid on the bottom and dots of it on the top where you put things. This keeps both the tray and the items on the tray from sliding around. I'd love to use the wheelchair user's idea of pulling a wheeled shopping cart behind me but, Disney doesn't allow you to "tow" things behind you whether you're using a mobility aid or your feet. So, no wheeled coolers, shopping carts/bags, wagons etc.

This man is not using a wheelchair. It’s a scooter. They are two different things. Someone in a wheelchair wouldn’t be able to pull an object behind them as their hand can’t reach to drag it. Wheelchair users could ask for help or pay for room service, which is part of planning a trip as someone who needs special assistance.

Tupperware Guy did nothing wrong. This is a pretty ableist assertion on your part. He does not have the luxury of not waiting for the elevator, and he may not want to come back for dinner and took enough at lunch. He could also be bringing food back to someone who is not feeling well. He thought ahead, didn't bother any crew member, and minded his business and did what he needed to do for himself or his family. He needed his arms to work the scooter, so the cart helped him be independent. Be thankful that you can run up and down stairs to get a snack when you like to or can pay an extra charge for room service, not everyone can. Sometimes we need to think outside of our own perspective, our experience is not the experience of others.

Aside from the mattress on the balcony, these things are really pretty harmless. So the guy on the scooter figured out a way to take his food away to eat it where he wanted (have you tried steering a scooter or dealing with reduced mobility while trying to balance plates? I think it is pretty smart, actually). The blankets on the connecting door? Maybe it worked, maybe it didn’t, but it didn’t affect anyone else. The note on the room service plate? Not very effective, but harmless. Writing on the mirror? They should be cleaning mirrors anyway on turnaround days, and those markers are pretty easy to clean off with regular glass cleaner. My point is, just let people be. They aren’t hurting anyone, and you are not the Cruise Police.

The mattress thing…if RC doesn’t think it’s an issue then why is it an issue for others… there are far more offensive things people do with mattresses - or on mattresses. And then the guy in the wheelchair… once again… if RC doesn’t mind why should anyone else…. He clearly has mobility issues…maybe he cleared it with RC or maybe its too exhausting for him to make multiple trips or maybe he has Post Traumatic Stress Disorder from serving his country and has a hard time asking for things….seriously. And again. Maybe room 1826 was so fed up after waiting for shitty food for over two hours and did not want to escalate the call and was so over it….taking a few seconds to whip up an angry note probably helped them feel better. The message on the mirror is just weird and cheap.

The Tupperware was a better option than the plates because we were able to stack the containers in the fridge where the plates wouldn’t fit. We also used a few for unrefrigerated snacks. We had early morning excursions and ate the food for an early breakfast before we left the ship. It was very convenient.

In your cabin is the correct way, in the passageway the food trays are in the way of wheelchairs, scooters, and the cleaning carts the stateroom use for their cleaning supplies. Not to mention it is a tripping hazard for people walking in the passageway as well. When you are done eating you should call guest services or room service to have the tray removed from your cabin.

He does not have the luxury of running downstairs to grab a snack and probably saved himself time as he has to wait for an elevator. Perhaps he wanted to stay in for the rest of the night and needed to bring food for his evening meal? Perhaps he is bringing food for someone else as well.
