Very fair and accurate. My BMW drew the most attention at every stop, but after a $1,500 minor brake job and replacing the fuel gauge 3 times (even the dealer admitted they were worthless on the 1200 RT) I switched to a Goldwing...after owning an '04, an '05, an '08, and now a 2018 DCT airbag model - I would never go back. Love your channel...keep up the good work!

Having owned two K1600’s and three GW’s IMO the review is very fair and I agreed with most of the comments. While I do miss the performance of the BMW, the DCT, lower center of gravity and comfort of the GW fit me better now that I’m in my 80’s.

I personally agree with your overall assessment even though I own 2 BMW's. However IMO the BMW is far more performance oriented than the Goldwing, both in terms of power and handling making them two very different motorcycles. If I were to put together a rating system the only thing I would have done is to add more weighting to certain categories. For example I do not see a rating of 1 for suspension being equal to a weighting of 1 for storage locking. I would have counted suspension as 3 points given its overall impact on riding. I thoroughly enjoyed this series. Keep it up.

One of the best and fairest reviews I have ever seen on these two bikes. Excellent job. I want to note that I have a 2012 K1600 and this bikes engine will literally obliterate most modern day sport bikes. This engine is shocking in terms of performance and handling.

I also own the '12 GTL.... and Nate is correct on this. My bike can beat any other touring bike, but not gonna compete with a liter bike. When it's time for an upgrade in another 6-10 years, a GW DCT will likely be my choice though.... especially if they take heed of CG's review here and "fix" some of the "deficiencies".

I had a 2013 k1600GTL and it was awesome! That said I tipped over a number of times. The down side of this bike is 1: seat is terrible 2: turn signals do not cancel for quite a long time and 3: height of seat is too high with that much mass. Going down the road at 100 mph it was absolutely wonderful but at 02 mph it was quite a handful. I loved that bike but am glad it is gone

I currently have a '22 R1250GSA, have owned 2 Goldwings and a K1200 and have done some research on the new GoldWing plus the K1600. A couple of thoughts: 1) For grip & butt heaters, my GSA has a button on the right handlebar which is a shortcut to the heat controls. Press that and I see both the Butt & Grip heaters and can then select which one and adjust to 1 of 5 positions. Not sure if the K1600 has that or not. 2) Engine-wise, I'd pick the K1600 simply because of more power (can't recall torque numbers), it is more performance oriented. But both are great. 3) Owner Maintenance - NO contest, GW all the way. You can't even get a Service Manual for more recent BMW Motorbikes and there isn't anyone who has published a comprehensive set of videos although there are a number out there. 4) If you added a category of "Oil Change", the BMW would win hands down. One drain plug, one filter. 5) If you added "availability" BMW would win. I ordered a Gold Wing last November but cancelled my order in June due to the bike not being available and bought a GSA. 6) GPS - there is no way I'd give Honda a check mark. Having a GPS that has maps that are over 2 years old with no updates on the horizon is virtually criminal especially if you go anywhere where there has been any road construction in the past 2 years. Yup, you do need a Smart Phone for the BMW but you can download maps (uh, current ones and it tells you when there are new ones - I installed the most recent maps 3 weeks ago and just got a notice that there are newer ones which I installed) so that you don't need a cell signal. 7) IMU. The GSA and I believe the K bike have a 6 position IMU which the Africa Twin also has but I don't think the GW has it. Anyway, you can be leaned over in a corner and apply your brakes on the GSA and it will control them so that you don't slide out sideways, even with emergency full on braking (I'm too chicken to try it). I don't think the GW will do that but you already gave the K bike the tick for brakes :). Again, when it comes down to it, it really depends upon the individual person and their riding style. I would say that Honda really needs to step up their game, especially with the electronics and at least up here in Canada, availability.

Don, Attended the BMW 2-day Street course at their facility in SC. Let me tell you about the IMU/Anti-lock breaks on the new BMWs R1250's and K bikes. We rode their R1250GS's. On the track, going 45-50MPH around a corner, slamming on the breaks for emergency stops, the bikes just stood up from the turn angle and just stopped.. No screeching, no sliding... Amazing!... It was really scary the first couple of rounds, but after our class got to trust the system, it was no sweat.

Great video and very fair review and comparison. I owned a BMW K1200LT and rode it for several years. My BMW was built for long distant traveling but not for running short errands. Also, my complaints about my BMW was the weight (nearly 900 lbs.), top heaviness, and a short kickstand. Parking my BMW on an uneven surface caused my bike to topple over on a few occasions. Having someone on the rear of the bike made the ride much more difficult to handle during slow speeds and coming to a stop while in traffic. Lastly, the maintenance cost for the basics was quite expensive as there were not many BMW places to get it serviced. What a real pleasure to own a 2019 Goldwing Tour DCT. Comfortable, low center of gravity, easy to maneuver in slow speeds, and having a passenger does not add any difficulty to the ride. Thank you Cruiseman for all your videos!!

Get your self a smaller trash bike you can train on and handle easy. Maybe a $1000 125cc and learn how to ride a bike really good. When you get your skill level up. Then your confidence come up and the weight of the bike, and every other problem become irrelevant. You just make up excuses for your lack of skill. And sooner or later you are going to pay for that… Not me or any other people are going to suffer because of it. Only you. Too much people hurt them self every year, just because they cant easy handle their bike. It gets much more fun, too. When you can whip your bike around like it is noting. It is mostly technique that you can learn. Even picking the bike up, don't take much strength. Go to Bret Tkacs, and look at his video of 3 techniques picking up the bike. I like the one you have your face against the bike, lean over the seat, take hold on the side a bit low. And just walk into the bike, push it up with your body wight and use your legs. He show who it is done off-road. But I bet it work just as good every where else.

I have just got a 2018 Goldwing Tour. Try this. I have found it to work every time with my Android. Before starting the bike, turn the Bluetooth off on your phone momentarily. Turn on the Sena (I have the 30k). Start the bike and the Sena will pair right away. Once it tells you it is connected and the 1 in the headset shows on your display, the turn your Bluetooth back on the phone and it will pair right away too. A bit of a process, but works every time for me.

Excellent review of as you say, two different bikes. I have owned the K1600 GTLE (In England) and the 2008 GL1800. We purchased the Goldwing in 2008 in between owning two Honda ST1300 Pan Europeans and although I loved the Goldwing, there was something missing about the fun and status of owning a Pan European. So, in late 2008 we purchased a new Pan European. Then, in 2013, we purchased a Yamaha FJR1300A. It didn't have the finish quality and pillion room of the Honda, however I did like the sound of the inline 4 over the V4 of the Honda and the upgrades of the Yamaha. In 2015 we revisited an interest in the big BMW that had last happened in 2012. We took a GTLE for a test ride in September 2015 and my late wife especially was sold it for the comfort especially. We purchased it exchanging it for the Yamaha. We had it for 6 months (Winter months) and despite enjoying the bike's unbelievable performance and as you said, that Formula 1 start up, I decided from the rider's point of view that the bike was too heavy for slow manoeuvring and going on the narrow roads we loved to explore. The bike fell over twice causing around a £1000 damage. I have never dropped my bike like I did with this one since I started riding in 1980. It simply had to go. We got back to a Yamaha FJR1300AE with full electronic suspension and full LED lighting. The 2016 bike had 6 speed gearbox too. The gearbox on the Yamaha compared to the BMW was super smooth. I really disliked the BMW gearbox. Sadly I don't ride any longer. I do have a KZbin channel however with all of my memories on. All the best. Paul.

All in all, a fair review and not easy to do because so many things are subjective. I’m deciding between the two. For me, the GW is a more suitable choice because of low speed handling, low CG and the DCT. Sounds like I’ll need an aftermarket seat to complete the bike. (Just sold my 1250GS. It was the best solo motorcycle I’ve had, but two up and loaded with 50 lbs of luggage it’s a disaster. This is the reason it had to go).

Nice job and fair comparison. My only 2 comments. Though I have a 2021 GTL with the 719 option and a professional ceramic job, even the basic GTL I my opinion has the better fit and finish than the Goldwing. The paint is fantastic. My riding buddy has a 2018 Goldwing, and although his engine is nice, it just can't compare to the BMW's 160 hp engine. The best analogy of the GTL, a crotch rocket disgusted as a touring bike. Once again, thanks for the great review.

Honest review as I’m on 2019 K bike with a BMW branded Garmin GPS which is integrated into the bikes bluetooth. It’s also removable for easily adding GPX files. Unfortunately the newer models went away from this arrangement. BMW is certainly more performance orientated. Above 5000 rpm the bike pulls like a freight train. Guaranteed to put a smile on your face! At 6’5” tall I felt more comfortable on the K bike than the GW. Valve inspections on the K bike is every 18k. It’s expensive if your not mechanical savvy. The dealer will get you for around $1500. However the air filter is much easier to get to on the K bike. Oil changes are fairly simple to do as well with a spin on oil filter. I just completed a 7700 mile 40 day tour of the western US and the bike handles beautifully on the mount roads. Just a blast on the twisty’s too. BMW does have a limited dealer network compared to Honda so I would recommend especially while touring out west that you carry towing and trip interruption coverage with either bike.

I watched all 4 videos today and have to say you are very fair and even-handed, even recognizing your bias towards the GW for obvious reasons I cannot fault you for. I've never ridden the GW, though many of my friends own GWs and Harley touring bikes so I was really familiar with them. When I was looking to supplement my HD Road King - I was on the fence about what to get, but was in no hurry to buy something. I'm very partial to my Harley, it's a great cruising motorcycle, but I often pushed it too close to its limits in the twisty mountain roads, even though I upgraded all the components. I just couldn't keep up with the GWs, Yamahas and other baggers in the twisties when two-up and loaded for multiple days on the road. BMW never entered my mind until I walked into my local dealership (who sells many brands including Indian and BMW) and an Austin Yellow K1600B Grand America caught my eye. I was really fascinated by the design, engineering, and cargo space. After a complete tour with the salesman he handed me the keys and I took it for test ride. It was everything I was looking for - nimble handling (for such a whale of a bike), insanely responsive throttle, and all the bells and whistles already came standard: floorboards - check; cruise control - check; heated grips and seats - check; reverse - check; premium adaptive headlights and auxiliary lights - check; power windshield - check; power locks - check... on and on. Best part is that it was a leftover from last year and both BMW and the dealership had drastically cut the cost making this far cheaper than the competition. As you mentioned, there aren't many of these on the road, so it was unique. When I pulled up the first time to ride with friends they were blown away by the BMW, and impressed with the handling. In conclusion, I might have been perfectly happy with a GW, but the performance level of the BMW suits my wife and I for the way we ride and tour.

The reason i bought the wing instead of the bmw was the lack of dealerships. I was concerned about a breakdown somewhere with a dealership maybe states away. As i communicated with other travelers along the way that had bmws it became apparent there were reliability concerns and no one was happy with their service and its cost.

I’ve had a 21 Goldwing 6 speed non tour for a year now with 20k on it now and it’s a fantastic bike. I bought it mostly because a turkey interrupted a cruse on my beloved ST1300. Supply lines from Japan being what they were the dealer said they were months away from completing the covered repairs. Being weeks away from retirement and the Michigan weather starting to get rider friendly I bought the shiny new bike. I did look at the bagger version often BMW 1600 but as I recall the price was considerably higher than the $23,000 Goldwing. By the way that tongue in cheek comment about the air filter replacement is very true. Without your video I would have shelled out big bucks for that job. Thanks!!!

I have both of these bikes. I have a 2018 Goldwing Tour DCT and a 2023 BMW K1600GTL. This is my third Goldwing and my second BMW. (My first was a R1250GS -- I loved that bike, but my wife hated it.) I got a smoking deal on the K1600GTL as a demo and someone made me a really great offer on my GS. I sold the GS and picked up the K bike. Here's where I had my first issue. At 6'1" that standard K bike seat is far too low for me. I also had just picked up a new pair of boots that same day. I came to a stop on a very busy street and my foot caught on the right foot peg and I slowly tipped over. I did manage to let the bike down easy and did zero damage. I couldn't even find a scuff, so no harm no foul. But I found the seating position was far to crunched up. I was really lamenting my decision and then I found a great upholstery shop. I had the seat modified slightly for about $450 and the bike now fits me perfectly. BTW, if you buy the BMW off the floor you would have to pay for the taller seat. It's one extra inch (25mm) for $1,000. I added 2.5 inches for $450 and the seat absolutely looks stock. I'm happy there. The radio antennas are paper and foil and mounted to the side tank covers. They do not work worth a damn. I can't pick up radio at all where I live. I also could not listen to XM....it would go in and out constantly no matter which direction I was facing. I replaced that antenna with a standard magnetic type. I hot glued a steel washer to the top of the clutch reservoir so I don't block the screws and then just stick the antenna on top of it. I fixed the problem for $12. I'm sure BMW could do the same for pennies. I'm not going to fix the terrestrial radio because I just don't care that much. I think Chris hit most of the salient points on the comparisons. I use the Goldwing for long road trips and pulling my camper and/or bringing my wife along. I use the BMW for my daily driver and rides in and around where I live. I also use it when I have my best friend and wife visiting. They take the Goldwing and my wife and I take the BMW. The bikes are pretty close in performance until you get above 5,000 rpm....then the BMW really comes into its own. You better be holding on. My Goldwing has gotten better than 60 MPG in some cases. The best I can get on the BMW is about 42. That might change as it gets broken in. The Goldwing is better all around, but the BMW is a real hoot. After the first couple of maintenance cycles I do my own work, so cost is about equal on both after the first few. I think the break-in on the BMW cost me $300 and that's about what a maintenance costs on the Goldwing. I just did everything on the Goldwing for about $107. That included brake flush, coolant change, oil change, filter change, plugs and final drive oil. I then paid the shop about $325 to do the valve check. I'll let you know what the valves cost on the BMW. I think they are due at 18k. All in all, after fixing the seat on the BMW, I really like it, but the Goldwing is better for pure touring. The Goldwing will also out accelerate a super-loud Harley, even pulling my camper. LOL (I bet that guy is still wondering what happened. LOL) Oh, the panniers on the Goldwing are all but useless. I've figured out ways around that issue.

I have one bitch with the BMW vs the GW. I had a K75RT and I kinda thought I needed rear end maintenance. The maintenance intervals for the rear were very different. The local BMW lace refused to do maintenance on my ‘95 K75rt in 2012. In 2013, the driveline failed. I’d still be riding that K75 if they could have or would have fixed that old bike. So, after puting more than100k on the Kbike, they made me change bikes. Re Fit and finish: I have a 2015 GW Audio. No Navi. People with all sorts of bikes stop me to ask who put that paint on my Goldwing. It’s stock and nothing has gone wrong with it in six years. It’s gorgeous.

Thanks for the excellent work. I own a 2018 GW and often ride with friends who own the BMW K1600 and also the 1250 GS. I know that it is almost impossible to do it, and more considering 50 variables, but it is true that there are certain factors that can weigh more than others, for example, the manual gearbox and its unpleasant jolts; In my opinion, they should be worth 10 tips. In the end, it is what the owners of the BMW value the most and envy the Goldwing and that has decanted two more friends to switch to the Honda.

Overall, a very good video. Is there a reason why you didn't mention performance? I would have to believe that the BMW would run away from the Goldwing in any type of performance comparison. Also, you mentioned the ECO mode on the Goldwing and even gave it a point for the additional mode, yet the K16 still got the same fuel economy. Would they be close if the Goldwing wasn't ridden in ECO mode?

Who the heck wants to ride in Economy mode anyway? For me, I take my K1600GT away from the freeway slab and look for the twistiest roads so I can open up my K1600 engine so it sounds like an F1 car and pulls like a freight train.

I have a 2008 Goldwing. I used to own a 1999 Valkyrie which I love to. I’ve ridden many BMWs. They’re awesome bikes. My problem is my 5‘5“ height. As you well know, the BMW is top-heavy and I’m vertically challenged. Both bikes are plenty heavy so I feel much more confident on the Goldwing in gravel and off-road. Which we occasionally run into when riding. We can’t control every parking lot or restaurant we go into. Reverses must feature for me. I can’t back either one up myself . I am a performance oriented person so I love the performance of the BMW but because of my height the gold wing produces more confidence. Like Cruz said it’s whichever bike fits. Your wants better. I was on 4500 mile loop around the country. I miss calculated my rear tire wear.. Fortunately for me when I discovered the bike was down to the cords on the rear tire. I was only 30 miles from a Honda dealership. that’s when you’re glad of the dealer network. I was able to get a new tire. But it cost me as much as I had already paid for the front and rear tire. I headed home in the garage. I do my own maintenance. The Honda Goldwing rear tire is one of the hardest tires to change manually. but you can save a bunch of money if you’re up to it. I just recently put a new rear shock and spring from traxxion dynamics on rear. A rebuilt, the front shot seals and bushings and new fluid. I also installed new steering head bearings. I got all these parts from traxxion dynamics. it’s amazing how much better the bike rides. I have 55,000 miles on it. It looks like someone changed the front springs before. Rebuilt the front shocks because the right front fork was leaking fluid bad. I can’t believe how much big difference it made. The bike rides and handles so much better now. It really really inspires confidence. I can lean it much further into the turns before I drag the foot pegs.. Most people would be surprised at how well the Goldwing handles even the older version. I’ve ridden the new model and it’s even it’s even better performing than my 2008 as far as handling. In a nutshell, it’s all up to the rider and what they’re looking for as to which bike would be better for them. If I was taller, I might prefer the BMW. But my height, the Honda is the way to go. Thank you for your review, Cruiseman.

As always, your videos are great and informative. Personally, the comfort category is the MOST important on any vehicle. It doesn't matter if it's a car, truck, motorcycle, etc... That being said, the comfort category should be given a few more points in my opinion. I have a 4th Gen Wing and have already decided a 5th Gen will be my retirement present in a few years.

I currently own a BMW GSA and this is my 3rd GS bike. Previously I rode a Harley StreetGlide for 5 years. Those are my base measures for comparing different bikes. I realize it's quite different. But...I really love BMW. That said, I became intrigued with the new '18+ GW so I bought a used 2019 DCT non tour. The bike was awesome in many aspects. In fact, I really liked it for several reasons. However, mine had an annoying continuous vibration felt at cruising RPM. I could feel it in the handlebars and even a bit in the footpegs. I did all the troubleshooting and was told it was normal. My hands would feel numb after highway rides and the discomfort wasn't worth it. So I regretfully sold the bike. I say regretfully because the bike ticked off so many boxes for me and I loved the power, weight distribution, and handling. The K1600 had none of the vibes the GW did. I wish others might comment if they have felt this GW vibration because it really was the only thing that made me sell it. But now I'm looking to purchase a K1600. If the vibration wasn't there on the GW, I'd say it wins hands down though.

I stop for gas....I like your bike, what is that?. I stopped for a coffee yesterday. The Barista commented on it. I was getting gas and a lady got out of her Subaru Outback.....looked over. Wow, I like your bike! I've also gotten comments on older vintage Japanese bikes I've owned, but the distinction is definitely obvious.

Chris, this was an excellent review. As a ‘Wing owner, you went out of your way to be fair and balanced in pointing out the good and not as good qualities of each brand of full fledged touring motorcycles. Having a 29” inseam, I choose my 2018+ Goldwing over the BMW because of the feeling of top heaviness of the BMW. BTW, I traded my 2018 Tour DCT for a ‘21 Goldwing non Tour model with a manual trans. As brilliant as the DCT can be, and tried as I might, I just could NOT get comfortable in low speed maneuvering with the a manual clutch. That’s on me. Yes, I’m trans bigoted. Cheers, brother!

great comparison ...I think there are a couple of things that could be added...neither of these two bikes are considered off road but in the occasional scenario where there is no other option but to go off road due to bad weather or something like that the BMW will do better for being higher and allow a better view of the obstacles ahead...however, in certain places where the road may lead to loss of control of the motorcycle, either due to a sharp curve or maneuver at very low speed, the goldwing will do better due to its lower center of gravity due to the gas tank is inside the frame and the engine is horizontal near the ground

Although I really dislike the DCT, I have always returned to the Goldwing as the go-to bike over all others. There is just nothing better in my humble estimation. However, opinions about bikes are like threads on forums about which oil to use or which tires to buy. It's very anecdotal. HOWEVER, the empirical evidence also supports just how incredible Goldwings really are! So, it's not entirely anecdotal. My Goldwing purrs like a kitten and handles pretty well even with it's inferior stock suspension. (Full monty coming up soon). Whatever you happen to ride, ride safely, ride well, and ride often!

I came here looking for info more than a comment opportunity, and I got it, but one minor point I'll make is that my 5'2" pillion spouse, who has sat (sitten? perched?) behind me for many thousands of miles over many states for the last 30 years or so, lit up like a Christmas tree when we switched from a Honda ST1300 to a BMW K1600GTL in 2018 (with a bit of Gold Wing in between). All the bikes were comfy (largely thanks to Russel Day-Long seats), but the K was the first time she could see the road ahead over my helmet. It was a game-changer for her, thus the end of my affair with Hondas. You can throw every other spec out the window - she would never again voluntarily accept us buying a touring bike that gives her less forward visibility than the K. True, it comes with a minor increase in head buffeting, and if she was 5'8" instead of 5'2" it might be a different answer, but she has never said the K bothered her even on the longest days or worst wind conditions.

Depends on who measured, and I’ve seen some with it reversed (Wing is always faster 0-30, though, no contest), but that’s a tiny part of performance. Most of the performance part of it is roll-on at speed, top speed, and by far the most important, hustling through the twisties and showing up smaller bikes. That requires lean angle the Wing simply doesn’t have, even if you lean off. Having ridden both and owning one, the biggest straight-line difference is the roll-on of the BMW when it’s in its power band.

I have a K16 2022 , recently had a look at the 2022/23 Wing which I liked for its looks and navigation interface but I’d worry I’d loose out on performance and control with that quick shifter compared to DTC , the K16 just seems to have that exciting event of a ride to offer compared to the wing especially with bmw ability to quickly remove panniers and top box . The weight seems a lot less on BMW but I’ve not ridden the wing to know if the pendulum effect is less on the wing . I’ve never really figured out my way around all the BMW Menus but I hardly use em anyway so more buttons and intuitive navigation on the wing is attractive . Getting the K16 on centre stand is pretty easy with the right technique I’ve installed Illium works pannier drop bars for protection . So for me I think the extra price premium for the wing at £32 K vs £26/27k for BMW is hard to justify when the BMW seems to offer a more engaging exciting sports kinda ride with More twisty A and B roads to enjoy in U.K. and Europe rather than MWay cruising all be it it’s said the wing costs less to maintain BUT if one doesn’t keep bikes that long and change to a new or different model brand that’s less of a consideration also as I get older (71 now ) perhaps I will try a wing for more laid back comfort ride experience and just to have owned one while I still can !! However A 1500 mile one owner ‘23 wing in U.K. from A main dealer is about £29k and to trade in a K16 even with low mileage the depreciation gap would be substantial to make it almost unviable to change for marginal gain so for that wing experience for me it’s probably just keep my K1600 and enjoy its energy and comfort and just hire a Wing from time to time to have that experience and in time if it’s more suited to what I do then I’d have the rental experience to draw on to help decide if I’d get one 😊. I liked your detailed and balanced review interesting how close the score was ✅

I own the 2018 GW DCT. Test rode plenty of K bikes. Why? Because BMW wants you to test ride their bikes. The K bikes are so much fun to “test” ride, but I would not want to own one. Biggest reason? Service and support. Here in the USA there is a Honda motorcycle dealer almost in every town and city. Not so with BMW. Twist that around from the European market and it flip flops. Now you have a BMW dealer on every corner. Maintenance is easier on a GW and cheaper. Parts are available readily. Not so with a BMW. If I lived in Europe I would not hesitate to go with a BMW. Now with these stricter Euro emissions both our bikes may be on the chopping block and it may not matter.

Great video, it was like a GW and a GTL sales pitch in one video. These bikes, other than that they are motorcycles and presented to market as full touring units, couldn’t be more different from each other. Even the targeted customers are worlds apart. Remember “high speed” is a very relative term among MC riders. I personally don’t consider anything below 120 mph high speed. Also MC handling is a totality of numerous performance values, acceleration, braking, dynamic lean angle, rider position, the bike’s readability, etc. it really takes a track comparison to expose the truth, which when the GW was tested against the BMW K1600b Grand America the GW was far behind on all above mentioned factors. It’s really not far to compare the GW to the GTL, a closer non fair comparison would be against the K1600 Grand America, but even then the targets goals of each are different, just a little closer. Low speed handling? I’d say your spoiled by that DCT and probably need some training time to master the grey area on a manual clutch. It’s well documented that the GW had the worst slow speed turning behavior other than an Indian. Head and eyes baby! And again on a closed MC control pattern(s) course the differences would quickly surface. And I was LMAO at the description of “if your a manual transmission bigot”, I had to replay it like 3 times to be sure , 😂😂😂😂😊 In the end both the GW and GTL are whales, it’s just that the GW is a Blue Whale and the GTL is an Orca.

I've spent more on maintenance in that time on the bmw than I paid for the V65. That said, the GTL reminds me of the performance of the V65. But I'd rather pay for the maintenance of a Honda. Also, the sound system of the bmw sucks.

I agree with several others that a 'weighted' rating approach would have given more points to factors that mean more in purchase decisions. I also agree there was an attempt to be unbiased, but you cannot totally escape favoring features that are closer to your personal preferences. The fact he hadn't fully spent the time to figure out how to use several of the BMW's features meant he tended to choose what he was familiar with on the Honda. One reason why there is a menu to scroll through on the BMW is because it has more useable features and functions than what can be placed on Honda's handlebar's switchgear. Comment's about paying $1,900 for BMW's "719 Paint Upgrade" ignored the other features that are also included in that upgrade. For me both bikes aren't ideal. I've owned two BMW R1150RS bikes, which weigh-in more on the sport side of sport-touring. While hardly light, they're not 750-lb ++ beasts that you're worried will topple every time you step on a bit of gravel at a stop. If I were going to buy something for pure touring I would choose a new BMW R1250RT. It has comparable side and top-case space, excellent wind and weather protection, comfortable seat for rider and passenger, sophisticated ride modes and electronic controls, seamless Shift-Pro shifting, plus many more comparable features to these bigger bikes, yet is significantly lighter, handles better, and is no slouch in the performance department.

I found that I did not like having my legs fatigued being bent for extended periods. I want to know if the pedal placement on the Goldwing is better for taller riders. I think there are aftermarket pegs for both bikes, but because of the engine protruding they might not be the best option.

I just test drove a new Goldwing DCT here in Fort Smith, Arkansas. I'm a man that loves that big flat six engine. The power and smoothness is legend. I've had Honda Valkyrie Standards, Tourers and Interstates. I currently own a Valkyrie, two BMW RTs, two K-bikes and an Airhead. Here's my take. Yes, the Goldwing big flat six engine is wonderful, but not that DCT. I found the DCT transmission to be clunky...plain and simple. I used to drive a VW GTI and that DCT was wonderful. Not the Goldwings. I'm sure I would have much preferred the manual, but the dealership only had the DCT....so sad. And HOLY COW...don't get me started on all those damn switches and buttons!!! I'd bet the left control alone has over ten switches, buttons, etc. That's just insane!! I guess there are folks out there that love this sort of thing, but not me. It's like comparing the ergonomics of my Toyota to my girlfriend's Jeep. In my Toyota 4Runneer, I can easily grab a knob unseen and do what I need...simple and ergonomic. In my girlfriend's Jeep Grand Cherokee, there's an up button, down button, this button, that button and they're all right next to each other. NO THANK YOU Honda Goldwing. I go out to ride and relax...not find out how many buttons I can press and wiggle in a mile. What on earth were they thinking??? Just look at the left control! The engineer in charge should be ashamed.

I feel that BMW is continuing on with the Bagger & Transcontinental where Honda left off with the 1st gen Valkyrie. It's interesting to note how in this era of tighting emission requirements that BMW went with a air-cooled engine design for their heritage line?? Yamaha too, for that matter, opted for an air-cooled V-twin for their flagship luxo-tourer rather than upgrading the V-Max derived V-4.

Great review! Something to consider regarding handling characteristics, you have to start at the tires. If you look at the profile of the tires used on each bikes, the BMW is using a more egg shaped tire to promote change in direction. This will make the bike more twitchy as a result. The Goldwing on the other hand is using more of a cruiser tire. Also when mentioning the ride modes. I understand the Goldwing has more ride modes, but do they actually accomplish what they advertise? For example does the Hondas eco mode actually increase fuel economy?
@williambutler3630

Correct on the tires. BMW highly prioritized a huge bike that can still almost flick back and forth, and which could quickly and easily pass the Wing on a curvy road. It’s a dream and does the seemingly impossible. BUT if you don’t do a lot of twisties? Yes, get the Goldwing. With a pillion and trunk, it’s more stable on the super slab, and it’s easier to maneuver at parking lot and garage speeds, too.

Your comparison is very detailed and neutral. A few model years makes a big difference. You spent a lot of time on technology. A more fair comparison will be rating the BMW against the 2023 Goldwing. Thanks for the comparison

I've found setting the suspension to sport, and 2 up raises my 2014 K1600GT enough to get it on the centre stand easier. Remember too that the K is still lighter than the GW, even if it is a bit top heavy by comparison. Your opinion of the K lighting is spot on 100%. All that techno wizardry to light the tree tops, leaving a definite dark area in front of the bike. Removable saddlebags and trunk are awesome, but I never remove the trunk. DCT will be a requirement on my next bike, if I keep riding. Arthritis is making holding the clutch difficult in traffic. Overall a decent review. The BMW menu system is a matter of time to learn and get used to the controls. The cruise control is better than in any car I've ever owned and infinitely better than my '08 Wing, although it takes me a few days to remember how it works, every spring. It just seems backwards. I really want to test the new Wing, but the local dealer no longer does any test rides.

Have you created a new video with the 2024s? Both had upgrades. I'm interested in the GoldWing upgrades. Cheers and great videos!

The Goldwing, hands down. It's the most comfortable and reliable bike I've ever owned, and I've owned a bunch!

It is a very fair review. I have to disagree with your assessment about low speed handling. Not having a clutch gives the Goldwing DCT a disadvantage. Mastering low speed maneuvers is more readily accomplished with clutch and throttle manipulation. If I was going to get a heavy freeway motorcycle, a Gold wing would be my choice. Since I ride secondary highways almost exclusively and prefer curvy mountain roads, neither motorcycle would be suitable for me. I have ridden a Goldwing DCT in a very curvy route, and it handled quite well; but riding these roads all day on the GW would not be pleasurable and deprive me of the pleasure of shifting the gears. I typically average 500 mi per day on multi day trips. I owned a Mercedes in the past and found that nothing was intuitive. I had to refer to the owners manual to accomplish simple changes. I perceive from your review that riding a BMW would be a similar frustration for me. Having a beautiful TFT display is great on the 1600, but it seems that using it to its potential would be frustrating.

Well Done… you impressed me with this review… I have owned 2 Honda Goldwing but you have convinced me to purchase a BMW 1600… I also own a BMW 1250 and other motorcycles.

Helmet storage should not have been a separate category - it was redundant, as you already covered the helmet storage when talking about the panniers and trunk.

It's nice to see that you love Hondas goldwing I have one and I love it but you will never be able to make a fair comparison or try to see any other bike because the only thing that you got in your eyes is the Goldwing
