Cruising the River Great Ouse/ Episode 33

A change is as good as a rest or so they say! In this episode I am exploring a small section of the River Great Ouse. Starting at St Neots, I make my way downstream to explore a nature reserve, tackle the River Ouse’s enormous locks, and a bit of wild mooring.

I had lots of fun at Paxton Pits when my daughter was little... pond dipping and hunting for dragonflies... now my friend and I take our kayaks along the Great Ouse out from Great Barford. That river has many personalities and is also good for catching a glimpse of the kingfisher! Thanks for sharing xxx

Beautiful senery we are lucky in Northamptonshire and surrounding areas, I used to stay in Felixstowe a lot, I would go for a walk on the beach at 5am it was too busy at 6am. I liked a bit of headspace before I started the day. There is something quite special about first thing, it does have a magic with it. Its rare I am up early these days, a wonderful time to take photos, as you know, you need to be there an hour and set up, its amazing how fast the colours change. Loving the myst on the water :)

Beautiful, beautiful video and photos. This area became my home town in 2020 having moved from a London borough. Your video and words exactly reflect how I feel about the Great River Ouse and its surroundings. I must get around to hiring a boat from 'All Aboard Boating' this year and try to do that exact route - never a done a lock before though!

Lovely video as always. It is coincidence that we had moored our boat at St Neots for the last 15 years and decided to move to the Nene for a change of scenery. We arrived at Oundle Marina on Monday.

Just stumbled on your channel and watched the great Ouse vlog. Stunning.habe hires narrowboats up There over the past couple of years and now decided to Move our boat from the medway in Kent up to the Ouse system next weekend for the reasons in your vlog. Can’t wait.

Beautiful scenery, I spent a week there last year and definitely due another visit. At last I have moved my mooring to the Ashby so I am much more central to access some great areas. Thanks take care. Alan.

The Cabin Cruiser Boating Adventure Cheers Alan, it’s a lovely river. In some places very wide, in others it narrows to what I’m familiar with on the Nene. I love though how the characteristics of the river changes. Loving your channel btw, especially now that we are able to get out and about on the rivers.

When you head downstream to try and stop off at Godmanchester and walk around Portholme meadow, you will love it.. you may even see our Widebeam at Huntingdon.. look out for Apple of my eye

Not only on the Great Ouse, but also on the Viking for a change. Do you find many wild places to moor on the Great Ouse and has it made you think more about staying on the rivers I wonder? Oh, I suppose I should ask, does it lock down due to flooding as often as our Nene?

Karl J Hi Karl, good observation! Yep on my little trusty Viking 23. I’ve found there are way more wild mooring opportunities on the River Great Ouse compared to the Nene. You just have to watch the depth at the bank. I’m still very much debating about staying on the rivers. I have to admit that I absolutely love my home mooring and lockdown has really put a bit of a hold on things at the moment. It’s certainly something to think about with winter just around the corner.
