The crew drinking baffles me, especially for the piano bar player who was accepting shots all night long from the audience. And then she was back the next night accepting even more shots. This was on Carnival a few years ago.

it is a safety issue -- in case of an emergency they have to know what is going on and go to their station -- the person from the piano bar is part of the entertainment and most likely does not participate in the safety program.

Doubtful. The entertainment staff are crew same as everyone else. The fact they were accepting shots may not mean they actually drank all of them? Idk...

Fist person I remember getting fired was a nurse who took 1 too many pills and he was caught streaking down the I-95. For the drinking, make friends with security first - if you have a bit of a night they can help you find your cabin. If you are an arse to security, they'll probably take you to SECO at the first opportunity.

If those rules had existed in the 60’s I wouldn’t exist! My father was a Captain (as am I) and he met my mother when she was a passenger on his boat. They were married for 35 years until his death. You never know when, where, or how you are going to meet your soulmate.

It was a small company and wasn’t as stringent about such things as major corporations are. And the kicker is that it was the very same boat that my parents met on,it was 3 years old when he met my mom and was about to be retired from service when I met Mary.

@@CruisingAsCrew Lucy thank you for sharing. I have to say, I can't BELIEVE that "prostitution" actually happens on these ships. That is just a policy right, not something that you have ever actually seen happen? I can't even imagine crew members selling their bodies for sex (to passengers or even other crew) on a ship to make money. I have sailed on 4 different lines. I will admit I was never LOOKING to buy sex from anyone (so maybe it was happening) but I have never seen it. Please tell me this is just policy NOT something you have heard has happened in practice.

Working harbour security, we often see people arriving late. Different lines have had very different approaches; I’ve seen some wait for passengers, but they’re rare. The most common norm I’ve seen for crew is that if they call ahead that they’re delayed, it’s not a big problem - the ship just leaves their passport with the agent and they fly on to meet the boat again at the next port.but if they’re late and don’t let anyone know, the one that sticks in my memory is a boat that waited for the crew member to arrive 20 minutes after departure. They were pretty dejected walking onboard - because they knew that they’d been waited for *just* so they could get their kit packed up in preparation for leaving their job at the next port.
@YS_Production
@YS_Production Жыл бұрын
Brutal. But completely understandable the cruise companies want it to be clear that being late has harsh consequences.
@awmperry
@awmperry Жыл бұрын
@YS Production Exactly. And waiting is expensive - the figure I heard a few years ago for late departure was $50,000 per fifteen minutes after scheduled departure time. I kind of hope they were quoting the price in SEK, which would be much less onerous.

Lucy, As a former US Navy officer, I can agree wholeheartedly that missing ship's movement and theft were super big No-No's, at least when I was in. I remember my enlisted personnel always saying that they could put up with a liar, a slacker, or a perv, but they simply would not put up with a thief. A wise ship's captain harshly punished thieves. During the age of sail thieves would be made to "run the gauntlet", where each crew member could show his contempt by striking the offender with a "Thieves' Cat." I'm sure the ostracization afterwards was equally as harsh as the corporal punishment!

Omg...omg......this so hits home on so many levels. So my dad and I cruise alot. It's our thing. No one else in our family cares for it, so it's our father daughter thing and we've been doing it for years. So anyway,..... Years ago we were on Enchantment of the Seas returning to Baltimore. We were held up for hours as the police and DEA swarmed the ship to remove a large number of crew that were part of a drug smuggling group. Was interesting to observe. Made national news. Same ship, different cruise, we smelled pot being smoked throughout a portion of the corridor close to our cabin for several days. We don't care one way or the other, not our business. But once again, we dock in Baltimore and within moments cops are swarming a cabin not far from ours. I guess security knew what was up. One cruise, my dad pointed out two young women and mentioned that they had both offered 'special personal services' in exchange for compensation to him in the casino the night before. ( now, my dad is no model or romeo, but he's sorta classically handsome and carries himself well) I thought he was mistaken, but maybe it's possible? So dad and I cruise so often that we sometimes get to know the crew members and hear about the 'soap opera' gossip that goes on below decks, and yes, it wasn't rare to hear about crew being taken out of service having been caught 'inflegro delecto' with passengers. Surprisingly, most were female crew. But we were also greatly saddened when our befriended NCL assistant hotel director was terminated due to excessive drinking. So yeah...none of this is so rare.

the 000 alcohol reading that crew have to have if tested whilst at work, makes totally no sense to me. some crew work 12-14 hour shift per day, but if they have two or three drinks after work occasionally, they are almost likely to show some form of reading the next morning. if the cruiselines want to enforce a 0 level, then they should not have a crew bar onboard, if someone got in trouble, or worse, got sacked because of that, i think its crazy. that would be the most unfair dismissal ive ever heard of :(

The 0 percent policy doesn't make any sense.. Three has to be some tolerance. Let's say You have 0.0001 alcohol and You get the sack. Unfair.

There's 0% policy for driving in my country, which has one of the highest per capita alcohol consumption globally. Yet you don't have people losing their licenses left, right and center. So of course in practice there's some (guessing) 0.005% tolerance, simply given by the detection limit of the breathalyser equipment.

I guess there isn't a Union for Crew employees. Is the Cruise Line OK with Crew Members posting various information (good or not so good ) on Social Media? My employer would never allow employees to post any type of information on Social Media, Speak with the Media (ie radio,TV etc)

Neither would mine, but you notice she is just talking in a room not filming round the ship. Probably the company is aware and is ok so long as she sticks within limit’s Union most are not some are it varies it also depends on department.

Interesting to me as a maritime historian what similarities and differences there are to, say 18th-century ships. While there was of course no numerical limit, crewmen were routinely flogged for drunkenness on duty, especially if they also "mouthed-off," as we would say--which alcohol makes far more likely! "Sexual harassment" may not have been a term they used, and we are of course talking about (presumably) all-male crews, but any unwanted sexual overture to another crewman could, potentially, get you executed (as could any discovered sexual activity). Bringing women aboard in port for sex was, though, generally ignored. Stealing was just as serious an offense as you say; it was terribly corrosive to crew morale, and would likely get you 12 lashes at least. Smoking was fine, most of the time--and these were wooden vessels covered in tar (!), but many sailors chewed tobacco rather than smoked it. Sex with passengers is not something I've run across so far. As you say, though, if it did happen, and the passenger wanted to get you in trouble for it, you (the crewman) would probably be in hot water. Merchant sailors signed up for the voyage and that's it, so if you missed the ship you just missed the wages. Navy sailors could be fined for "straggling," but were unlikely to be severely punished for missing all-aboard if they were clearly just drunk or hungover or--as often happened--in jail for rowdiness.

Quite a few channels end too quickly to actually leave a like or subscribe especially watching on a TV. Good to leave 5 to 10 seconds at the end of talking. You should get fired if ignore warnings about being smelly, leaving the toilet door open and spitting on the floor!

Do the people who engage in prostitution usually focus their services on the passengers or other crew members?
@Dirk_the_Daring

Having drugs on a cruise ship is an incredibly bad idea for crew or passengers. If you don't have a valid prescription for a controlled substance and you're caught, it isn't a possession charge. You are charged for smuggling. In US ports, customs has dogs go through the luggage when it comes off. Every cruise I've been on with Jamaica as a stop has had passengers taken into custody the moment they touch their bags with a dog alert. If you pick up a little weed to smoke on ship, wash your clothing well before you get to port and get rid of what you don't consume or you're going to be held up and explaining yourself.

What about some female passengers who have "a side job" in prostitution during the cruise? A former crew member said that if you see a woman alone on a cruise, it is probably someone who is not just on the cruise for the holidays.

Not having sex with passengers kind of makes sense but what about making friends with passengers and hanging out with them while at a Port of Call for example?
@KellySpore
@KellySpore Жыл бұрын
My understanding is it’s a no fraternization policy, which obviously includes sex. This is true in most hospitality occupations with varying levels of enforcement. Ships are closed communities for period of cruise, so it’s a bigger deal when those relationships go south. It’s not just sex but sexual harassment that is the concern.

Since you bring up prostitution, if a passenger chooses to make money on a cruise, exchange sex for $$$ while on international waters, is it even illegal for either party or any legal recourse what so ever?
@foxquetzal420
@foxquetzal420 Жыл бұрын
Depends entirely what country the ship is registered to: The laws of that country govern the ship in international waters and in domestic waters but there you are also governed by the laws of the country you are visiting or even sailing past. So you could be on a Dutch registered ship where its legal, but sailing in and around the US where it isn't = busted.
@johnmacdonald1878
@johnmacdonald1878 Жыл бұрын
Technically you are correct. In reality there is no international law. Most of these vessels are FOC in countries which probably don’t care as long as the fee is paid. The US jurisdictions are quite complicated. Technically the law of the county the vessel is in at the time applies for any offence. While the US may not technically have jurisdiction you may find yourself trying to argue the point to a US judge in a US court so good luck with that. Most likely the company is not going to like it and just kick you off at your expense in an inconvenient location.
