Frequently Asked Questions About This Video: 1. What powers the wheels? They are hydraulically driven from a separate inboard motor. Sorry, should have mentioned that. 2. Why can't it operate outside those tide times? Apparently the sand is very gently sloped until you reach the very middle whereupon it practically drops into a cavern. Thus there is no practical way to transition from wheel to boat for that middle bit, so they tell me, so use when the tide is out is not feasible. But also, I suspect the sand would be too soft as well.

I very-much enjoyed this! It seems a common thread in the UK is how so many residents volunteer their time to worthy causes. When you mentioned the volunteers, it reminded me of all the wonderful volunteers that help with the the locks on the canal system... Wales always has a special place in my heart as my great grandmother came to the USA from there, in the 1890's. (Her last name, Tharp. So a hello and shout-out to any remaining Tharp's over there! ☺)

Wouldn't matter to me if Tom Scott had made a whole series about it - because I wouldn't have seen them😂. I saw him once or twice and the chemistry wasn't there. Whereas I can with pleasure listen to David taking some minutes to describe making a very unremarkable-looking cheese sandwich. And the pleasure is all the greater when he's filming and describing something truly beautiful and/or interesting, as he mostly does.

What a brilliant idea for a unique situation, also like the fact that it's locally run by the community. My guess is that you need the 2 engines to deal with the tides and to take the boat on tours. Plus as a ferry you really need a second source of power, don't won't one of your engines failing crossing a fast flowing tidal river tidal river.

I can see boats like this working nicely in the British Columbia interior rivers with their firm sandy riverbanks. Not so good for Canadian Prairie river banks with their steep soft muskeg river banks. An amphibious truck might cross such rivers but tracks would be preferred over balloon tires. The real challenge is designing something that can cross hundreds of little arctic creeks and muskeg lakes delivering cargo over Canadas arctic when the ice roads have thawed out.

Lovely. That village on the left at the mouth of the Towy is Laugharne, Dylan Thomas's village and the prototype for Llaregubb, the village in Under Milkwood. I'd have been checking your skippers eyesight in case he was Blind Captain Cat. And you were in fact journeying on the famous "sloeblack, slow, black, crowblack, fishingboatbobbing sea". I always wanted to get to Laugharne, just because he was a hero poet to me in my adolescence.

There's a village here on the Fylde called Singleton. The name is believed to be derived from Shingle Ton or village on the shingles. The name suggests it should be right on the coast, but it's about as far from the sea as possible whilst still being part of the Fylde. Local story is the original village was wiped out in the same tidal wave, and survivors moved inland, but re-established using the same name.
