Socrates said "A life unexamined is a life not worth living". He was talking about introspection as I'm sure we all know, but examining yours is such great fun. I stumbled on to your blog four days ago, and I'm happy to say I'm now a junkie for it. Your presentaion is charming, done with such engaging enthusiasm, such self deprecating humour, yes, you are a professional broadcaster but it is so funny, so informative, so, personal, that it maybe is the art that conceals art, but, boy, you are so good at it. That's probably because you enjoy it so much. If you enjoy something you will always do it well. And, intersting as your blogs are, if it was someone else, I wouldn't have been moved to make what is my very first comment ever on KZbin. wonderful I love it.

Hi David watched all your vandemoniums and before that, came in in the middle of Cruising the Cut, so have gone back to the beginning of them now. Yes the Hymer looks like a good layout however I think all the new ones everywhere look so plastic looking I reckon your van is wonderful and much more organic (in word in Australia!) I think. I had a van conversion done about 8 years ago done out with laminate which I was happy with at the time but the pretend wood look has all faded from the sun. Now I have seen so many van builds I have decided to make mine more bespoke - painting the cupboards white and adding a trim to give them a cottage look and putting a beech benchtop on to replace the laminate one. Also going to put drawers in the cupboards as much easier to access stuff that way. You have inspired me with your perseverance to get things right in whatever you do. I'm a bit the same but made quite a few botches on the way with things I've made! Thanks so much for your wonderful vlogs

We went to the Caravan show too, the boat show could learn a thing or two, there were no staff standing guard at the doors of the motor homes, or fences preventing even a glimpse through the windows unless you have an appointment, which may be two days later..... Currently aboard Melissa at Crick Marina, first visit for a few weeks, a bit damp.

we only now followed your story about the camper/caravan visit. We do agree a smaller camper also in this part of Europe would be nice, as the VW camper has too little comfort for a longer period, so f.e. the campersize of about 5 meters is the max., we however swear by our little caravan the Kip Kompakt 35 which is a Dutch one, very complete and with a toilet (for us a must have).But it was the end of your story which pleased us so much, that you decided to keep your narrowboat. Never sell that one!!! It is so English and beautiful! We started sailing again since last year, after an interval of 10 years in a motoryaught, which was nice too, but the heart stayed with sailing. You never can forget the waterways, once you have discovered that way of living. So we wish you a good future, a lot of nice stories about your boat and nevertheless the Brexit, we will be able to follow you where ever you go. with kind regards, Peter and Marijke Bos and our beagle Papillon

Hello again, Just to let you know I am thoroughly enjoying your vlogs, and check daily for any new editions. A question about the canals, if you don't mind. I am aware England has a reputation for an abundant amount of rain, for which we in the southwestern US envy you. But, with all the miles of canals in England, and the millions of gallons of water they must use, has there ever come a time when the canals become so low, due to lack of rain in the highlands I presume, that they become a hazard? Just a thought. Lee
@CruisingTheCut7 жыл бұрын
Not sure what you mean about a hazard but water use on the canals is carefully controlled with reservoirs at the highest points and a lot of pumping. There's very little flow, remember, only when people use the locks. Unless a very warm summer, it's generally ok!
@Graybear787 жыл бұрын
I was just referring to your former comments. You had mentioned that the canals are only approximately four feet deep, and that your boat has about a two and one half foot draft. Should there be a dry spell, which we frequently have, the canal might become a little shallow causing you to drag bottom. Thanks for your response. Lee
@CruisingTheCut7 жыл бұрын
Ah, rig. Yes, there are times when you drag the bottom due to low levels although it's usually because of undredged silt or someone leaving the lock paddles open and draining the pound! Dry spells are less of a problem unless it goes on for a long time.

What I don’t understand is how you switch between all the different electrical sources. Battery/solar/mains, how do go for example from the engine to solar charging your batteries or being used directly to mains doing the same?
@CruisingTheCut3 жыл бұрын
It all happens automatically. If there’s mains, the mains charger does the work, if not, the solar. When you run the engine, it takes over. Essentially, whichever has more power pushes that into the batteries. Then everything in the boat draws from the batteries, including the inverter to run mains appliances.

Another question from the US of A, I'm really surprised that you can actually guide something that long down those narrow canals, must be a lot of bumping and banging going on, how long did it take you to feel comfortable with handling it by yourself, plus when it's only you how do you work the locks etc., hate to ask so many questions, it's just so different than anything I've ever seen, looking forward to your next blog....
@CruisingTheCut8 жыл бұрын
+John Henry It's not nearly as hard as you'd think; after half an hour you'll stop veering from side to side and keep it straight with no problems. The first corners you come to take a little practice, likewise going under bridges (where the canal narrows to one boat width) and tunnels but it's honestly not hard. If you're bumping and banging you're doing it wrong! Locking is something I will end up making a video about eventually, so stay tuned!
@7762815 жыл бұрын
Next you will be designing a pop top narrowboat, with LED lightbar at the front, side LED spotlights and a fold out deck at the rear. I am like you. I like any kind of mobile living vehicle. From Shepard's wagons to yachts. I guess there is a little gypsy in me. Or maybe a turtle. You should design a narrow boat on wheels. Wouldn't that be something?

Do you remember that episode of Top Gear where Richard Hammond turned a VW camper into a canal boat? I always liked that idea.

I cannot believe you didn't sell your boat almost immediately after acquiring it my expectations have been utterly betrayed

here's a thought? instead of being like everyone else for a welldeck? why not make it different, something like a transparent cockpit? made from plexiglass.

There are various designs I've seen. I suspect that would be a bit like a green house and it would need doors so you could get in/out. I do have transparent sides on my cover though!

Shame on you telling an old lady you're leaving the canals for land travel.

I thought you were serious ,about selling your boat, mind you ,although some of the waterways are really nice in summer, it would be a bit retricted for me . Now a camper van might be just the thing ,

As beautiful, relaxing and yes a bit romantic narrowboating can be I think I would prefer a motorhome better. I live in north Seattle surrounded by islands and have always thought, I would not want to be stuck on an island that has no way off without a boat. And during a disaster, no food was being brought onto island. I think I'd rather be in a motor home. I could go to many more places on land than water. But still wouldn't mind the odd trip on the canals if we had them. Or visiting your country again on one for a week or two. Isn't it nice to have choices these days?

Well, I'm confused now. Was this video before or after you had the camper van you've mentioned?
