Rivits is what we call in The Netherlands an "opduwertje", a small boat just big enough to carry a substantial motor and fueltank. They were used in the transition period from towed to self-propelled barges. Leashed to the side of a former towed barge they saved the owner a costly - if at all possible - refit of his barge.

Travelling a peaceful canal ending at a community owned basin. So nice - an oasis of decency in what tonight is proving a corrupt and bitter world. When people mock enthusiasts I have always said it would be a much better place if more people were train spotters and bird watchers and how are happy to pootle up Britains waterways be it as a lifestyle or a holiday. With age I find comes wisdom.

Yoam bin in the Black Country. Since i retired I walk the route from Windmill End up to Parkhead most day's , but alas I don't usually bother to go if it's raining. If it had been dry I dare say I would have bumped into you at some point. It is a beautiful place to walk all around Windmill End, and the tall chimney we saw is Cobbs Engine house. The engine that was in it is now on display in the Henry Ford Museum in Detroit, USA. David in Dudley.
@davidpowell5437
@davidpowell5437 Жыл бұрын
Actually, that's not quite correct. Henry Ford did obtain an engine from Windmill End, but it wasn't the big beam engine from the Engine House, it was a winding engine, apparently from the complex around it. I got curious and asked the museum! There were several pits on that hillside and the beam engine carried on pumping for all of them, long after its original pit closed. Mining finally ended in 1927, after the General Strike, when it was found to be uneconomic / impractical to restart work. Another David in Dudley 🙂

When did narrowboats as holiday homes or liveaboarding become the standard, as opposed to commercial use? Finally does anyone use boats for freight or trade? In the lower part of the Chesterfield Canal, they still have a horse pull the reproduction wooden boat, Dawn Rose. In the upper part by contrast, there are places where it's hard to see how they ever used horses. They're barely suitable for bikes now. I suppose things must have changed since the canal was built.

Thought I recognised the area. I usually go to the Black Country Boating Festival at Bumblehole in September. A great event with a lovely collection of boats. The tunnel is always fun to walk though.
