I live in Evesham and I’ve just been looking through your videos to find this! Brilliant video highlighting the beauty of the town, especially with the centre piece of the river! Loved recognising all of the landmarks you highlighted, as the town isn’t one that is ‘widely’ known. We had a massive food in 2007 which is why there is a lot of flood protection etc. in place. The park that sits to the left following the Rowing Club did once house the Abbey which was connected to the Bell Tower and Church up to the top . Obviously, Henry VIII had it destroyed in the dissolution of the monasteries! Loved seeing you cover the town so well!

Hi! I've only recently started watching but working my way through all your vlogs and thoroughly enjoying. I'm a merchant captain by trade but interested in getting a narrow boat later on in life! I don't know if someone has suggested this already but the sheer you experienced in the big locks could be down to bank effect. This is due to pressure differences at the bow as the water pushes through the water causing an area of high pressure. Water then accelerates down the side of the boat causing an area of low pressure. The consequence of this is that the bow will sheer away from a bank, or lock wall. This would be less noticeable in small locks or even counteracted as both sides of the bow would be sheering off each wall but could be felt in the much wider locks. Apologies if you already know of this! Google 'ship interaction' if you want to know more
@CruisingTheCut6 жыл бұрын
Glad you like the videos. Yes, a few other people have also suggested that in the comments but I like to think it's mystical river creatures playing havoc with me ;-)

I am still amazed at the engineering and work it took to make the rivers and canals navigable. And when you see a bridge from the 15th century still standing you have to admire the workmanship. I wonder just how much of our public works will be around in 400 years.

I dare say there's been a few rebuilds and repairs in that time but yes it is amazing, I agree.

At 2:45 these look like archimedes screw pumps. I work with this type of pump daily and they are great at moving large amounts of water and require little maintenance. I think (just guessing) they are used when water levels are low and will send the water which is used in the lock back up stream. Thanks for your great videos and look out for future comments from me while I binge watch them all. 👍

Very nice trip. Well nice for me as I didn't get bounced around the Locks. I remember hiring a boat out of Evesham Marina many years ago, due to take charge on Saturday, but not being let out until Monday due to flow in the river. I was fairly experienced by then and was with someone even more experienced and we pleaded our case to be let out on the Saturday. The person we were hiring from asked us to go and have a look at the river and come back and let him know what we thought...we did...and we agreed we'd be happy to stay in the marina until the flow subsided a bit!!! It would have been like white water rafting! Even on the Monday, making our way up to Stratford we nearly got caught on a weir! Thanks for a nice interesting vlog as usual David :)

You are very fortunate to be able sail a boat mostly through England. Come to Australia and we only have one river that has a bit of distance attached to it but the rest, well you would be fortunate to see water in them. If I lived in England I would join you on the water ways. It’s not a sit on the bum and steer the boat but a bit of fun/work whatever you may call it to navigate through the locks. Lucky you.

Hi! I'm reluctant to make a suggestion because I'm enjoying your videos as is, the timing, the subject matter, the narration. all good. But. In addition, for your consideration or you may already have something similar in the works. Here in Canada we are starting to gear up, or gear down, for the cold weather season. It would be interesting to see an updated getting ready for winter on the canal video. Thanks for all the excellent work you're doing with these videos.
@CruisingTheCut7 жыл бұрын
Hmmm. My total cold weather prep comprises buying a bag of coal for the stove. It would be different if I left the boat over winter but I live aboard so not much to say on that front!!

You leave the lock gates open on the River Wey aswell and it works very well, the first time we went on the Grand Union we left them open and got some strange looks. Presumably we shut them on canals to save water and on rivers there isn’t the same need. Very informative and enjoyable film, thank you for your efforts.
@CruisingTheCut7 жыл бұрын
Yes, I think that's the gist of it - water saving. I wish we had the same system on the canals though, it's a terrific timesaver as a solo boater.

As always a very good v'log. I can see were the trip can get quite dull and boring but the country side views more than make up for it. I loved that tudor styled house on the hill side that looked several 100 years old. I was looking for the Globe theater to be next to it ( Yes I know London far south of there). I'm quite jealousy of what you get to see. Until next time I'll try to contain my envy. time for a coffee.
