When we were in lockdown, I started making 8 1/2 squares out of my crumbs, strings and scraps. Making blocks this way is habbit forming, fun, and relaxing. I call it "Mindless sewing." So far, I have 350 crumb/scrapy/crazy 8 1/2 inch blocks made. No two are the same. Each of my blocks have many colors in them; and, I have many more waiting to be finished (because, I always make more than one at a time). As soon as school is out, I'm planning to put a quilt together in the "Lights and Shadows" or "Shadow Box" sashing pattern around 120 of my blocks. Also, I'm thinking of gifting some of my finished blocks to two of my sewing Buddies (to put together anyway they want to)..

I love working with crumbs! It's very addictive, and also very zen! I have two projects that are always ongoing as I make other things. I make crumb blocks 8-1/2" square, using your method, although I don't stick to a colorway - mine are just any old fabrics sewn together and I'm planning to make a shadow box quilt when I have enough. I also cut strips of various widths, 3/4" to 2" approximately, and sew them diagonally to an 8-1/2" tear-away stabilizer square, I use a 1-1/2" black strip down the center of each block. When sewn together, they form an "X" pattern. It's nice to look at all those old scraps and remember the things I made with them.

I've been doing the crumb stuff for a few years now and I love it as well. Years ago I got an old 3 or 4 gallon glass jar that they used to sell pickles in the old timey stores and I would just throw my crumbs in there I'm once it filled up I dumped it out and made some fabric

I have been collecting scraps for years now and have just about enough to make a table center for my round kitchen table. There aren't too many patterns for round table toppers so I will make my own crumb one. I have a beautiful pothos growing in water in an old jug that I have had for over 45 years, that sits on my table toppers. It always looks so cheery and homey. People often comment on how nice it looks. A crumb topper will look really nice. Just have to find a big circle! Maybe the lid of the plastic garbage bin we keep our cat's kitty litter stored in, with a few inches added around. You have me all fired up for that now.

Aren't they great? It is an example of everything old becomes new again. I am not sure how long you have been quilting, but do you remember the Mile a Minute quilts from 20+ years ago? This is basically a cousin of that. And before that it was a common practice. I made a bunch of Mile a Minute quilts but this is the first crumb project I have made in a while. Thanks for the trip down memory lane. ❤️

Put bias strips on the bottom layer. the feed dogs will gather them up just enough. If the bias edge is stretched, raise the top layer of fabric just a little bit to increase the gathering effect. I also like to have just a hair of my bottom layer showing along the seam edge because sometimes off-grain edges will move as they pass under the presser foot.

I really like this idea it really is nice looking but I have a question what do you sew on the back?
@SewtheDistance
@SewtheDistance 2 жыл бұрын
Thank you! There isn't a foundation on the back of this one. You just sew the chunks and crumbs together. That said, towards the end of the video, you can see that I am squaring up a piece of batting to the same size of the crumb panel. I just layered them so I could trim them the same to make my coasters. Hope this helps!

Kris, Will all those extra seams make the quilt heavier?
@SewtheDistance
@SewtheDistance 2 жыл бұрын
Great question! Depending on. your edges, they can be a little bit bulky, but they also seem to "behave" since you don't force them to one side of the other. I didn't have any problems with the coasters, but I can see how this may be an issue. It is something to consider, for sure. I probably should have addressed this in the video. I will in my next one.
