Except for polished metal mirrors, which don't have glass at all, or low distortion mirrors, that are front silvered so the prism effect is minimized. Both don't have a gap but aren't one-way mirrors.

Mark, did you know that mirrors used in laser show systems and probably also in video projectors are all front surface mirrors. This to avoid double reflections that spoil the projection. Some mirrors are just plain polished aluminium als thus also do not have this effect

Some cameras use first surface mirrors as well, for the same reasons, other camera designs don't use mirrors to avoid the problem entirely

Optics major in training here, this works majorly well to identify one way mirrors. Another interesting thing with one way mirrors is the was side that is observing has to be majority dark as to not let as much light through. Think being inside a house with all the lights on, it reflects the light back at you when you look through a window, but from the outside everything is clear as day. Cool stuff

This trick only works for a certain kind of one-way mirror. A better trick is to put a camera up to the mirror.

If there's a piece of glass on the one way mirror it act's like a normal mirror even if you use the finger trick it will not work. If there is a piece of glass on top of the mirror you can just use your phone camera and the light of your phones camera you can see the other person on the other side.

also sometimes people put a mirror infront of the one way mirror so the finger trick wont work another way to tell if its a one way mirror is to turn on your flash and video recorder on your phone and put it against the mirror you can see the other side

normal mirrors with the reflective surface on the front also exist, but they're typically only used in settings that require optical clarity, like telescopes or laboratories with laser experiments as they are more expensive to produce

Light reflects off of the outer surface of a one way mirror so adding another pane of glass would have the same effect as making the glass thicker. It would make no difference at all.

even this trick can be done by putting layer of glass , it can detect by turning flash and camera on phone at the same time then place it face into the mirror,you can see the other side of glass if it isn't real

What about pressing my light canon against the mirror and shining in, to create a smal supernova on the other side so the light penetrates back though the mirror? You would esentially see everything behind.

The way I do it, if possible, I'll turn off the lights of the room i'm in so that the mirror is dark and then hold a flashlight up to the mirror and see if there is a room behind it. Not perfect, but better than nothing.

yeah except that just simply isnt true, a one way mirror can have a piece of glass between the reflective surface and your finger and a regular mirror can have the reflective surface on the outside too. its not an end all be all test.

NOTE: Some mirrors I.e. schools or public restrooms make your fingernail touch- however this DOES NOT necessarily mean it’s one way- it could be stainless steel or another type of metal to avoid shattering
