@anonymous01201 The excuse they gave was that too many people were posting "homophobic slurs" or offensive comments or whatever. A less conspiratorial reason I've read is that storing all of that data, thousands of comments across thousands of shows forever, was just kinda expensive or time consuming to maintain, and they decided it wasn't a feature worth keeping.

The streaming nightmare proved that sometimes it is not a service problem, it is a system problem. The way licenses work is the issue. Why are they fully exclusive deals rather than how supermarkets work where brands can sell themselves to multiple publishers? Of course, people won't compete with themselves, so for example disney content would stay on disney+, but what is the point in scattering the offerings to the wind? If anything, they could easily make timed exclusivity deals like how some newer videogames stay on only one plattform for a year or two and everyone else willing to engage with it gets a release later.
@thelakeman25385 ай бұрын
It's because IP laws encourage monopolistic behaviour, at the same time there's the case of music streaming where every major service has basically all the songs you'd want so the choice of your service just ends up being a question of user experience and whether it was bundled with something else you already use (eg- yt music and youtube premium, prime music and amazon prime). I don't understand why every player desires exclusivity in video streaming either, owing to my ignorance. But maybe it has something to do with the legacy of cable tv, they certainly seem to desire that with the proliferation of streaming bundles.

@@thelakeman2538 I actually think cable TV is a big part of it. For many decades movies and shows were only available on specific channels in specific packages from specific companies and providers. Give it another 5-10 year and I think moves and shows will become more like music where licensing can be made to multiple provider’s at once. Because these companies will realize they can make more money if there shows and programs are on 3-4 platforms instead of only one. And actually TV is literally dying more every day so they can’t just go back to cable TV again. When the money starts drying up and these companies don’t make money from just their own content they will be much more willing to license their own content to other platforms because it’s safer and more reliable revenue than the dwindling ad spammed streaming service. 24:29 We've definitely regressed as far as TV shows go. It used to be you paid a cable package, got all the channels and could watch any show, but they aired in predefined slots and you had ads. DVRing solved the problem of air times as you could record the show and watch whenever, but people were still annoyed by ads. So netflix came along and said hey, for 10 usd a month you can watch everything, whenver you want with no ads. Now 15 years later we have countless streaming services, each with their own subscription, and they reintroduced ads. So the only thing that's argually better now than before is that it's on demand (which DVRs solved anyway decades ago). As for the consumer experience and pricing it's way worse than in the cable era, at least you could easily switch channels on the tv with a remote instead of needing 500 different apps and accounts.

Unfortunately, the truth why Crunchyroll don't have any real competitors in their niche is most likely because there isn't really a market for one. For most people with any kind of interest in Anime, just Netflix alone is enough. A streaming service like Crunchyroll only really matters to the "much more that casual"-fan, and even then, most of the people who subs to Crunchyroll do that to get access to a couple of shows they can't get anywhere else. The ultra-hardcore-anime superfan who even recognizes there is a problem with Crunchyroll is such a small part of the audience, and are already aware of and willing to engage in piracy, that creating a service that caters towards them would probably be financially impossible. The vast majority of fans of anything, including anime, are casual fans.

If i could say something about one of the points you made. The one about watching the live action One Piece on Netflix isn't a substitute for the actual anime on Crunchyroll. I felt that point was a bit weird given Netflix has the actual One Piece anime on there with them also airing the most current arc weekly. In addition to having the One Piece movies and specials on there, with some movies that even Crunchyroll doesn't have.

All you need to prove that the anime streaming industry is screwed is the fact that no one had enough brains to get the license for Girls Band Cry. Also it's pretty clear that anime piracy is 100% a service problem when people who will blow hundreds or thousands on merch won't pay for a crunchyroll subscription, not to mention this invalidates crunchyroll's other reason for existence when the prevailing wisdom on how to actually support shows you like is just to buy the merch. Side note not really related to crunchyroll since they don't actually produce anything maybe instead of constantly jacking up prices streaming companies should figure out how to spend a reasonable amount of money on shows people want to watch not like traditional media hasn't done it for the last 60 years or anything, hell how many streaming services have NCIS or Grey's Anatomy outlived at this point?

The comparison of looking at how people are not pirating music is an interesting one. They are not pirating music because the value of music has been eviscerated thanks to places like Spotify. The music artists make peanuts off of streaming. Due to the value of selling music diminishing, newer artists have to sign 360 deals with the labels. I am happy casual music listeners get a cheap deal, but it makes it more challenging for an artist to get off the ground.

I dont think it was mentioned here, but in another video they mentioned that they only pay translators $80 per epistode. However, honestly as someone who knows Japanese linguistically and also half Japanese and lived there, the $80 wage for translators is honestly believable, and I don't blame them. If you know Japanese, you'd notice most translations on Japanese (just in general too not just crunchyroll) have wrong translations. Typically, you get more rushed translations (partly due to low wages) for people doing these jobs. Honestly $80 I'd argue is on the upper hand as unless its a very long episode/movie, you're likely getting paid $30-50 an hour. Which is EXTREMELY HIGH wage. This is pretty common with freelance type of work which I also do sometimes (though different industry, art/animation stuff). Freelancing is not a job you do for a living, its a side hustle / hobby. Lots of people are also now cheating with the use of AI. The average quality has diminished a lot due to this in most translation things. Did you know that 90% of the cookbooks now are written by AI? Its crazy.

The solution is easy, just don’t have exclusive content. Make the license holders and the streaming services seperate companies, so no streaming service has a monopoly over any piece of content. That’s why music streaming works, because you get the same stuff at KZbin Music as on Spotify. This is change that has to come from the license holders, not the streaming services.
@cyrusunderscore73155 ай бұрын
Ngl, i hope what happened to netflix happens to spotify. I liked it at first, but it just kept getting more and more annoying with its ads. I always found it insulting how they go "imagine if you could have unlimited skips :0 or listen to songs in albums in the right order???" as if i hadnt already been doing that since primary school. I started using it again for the first time in a few months and now the ads are completely unskippable. I refuse to pay for premium partly out of spite, but mostly because i want my money to go to the artists who make the music i enjoy and spotify pays them so little you may as well pirate the music. Every streaming service is run by money-hungry assholes, is the problem. Nobody actually cares about creating spaces where people can connect with art (whether that art be films, animation, music, whatever), they dont even care about having a hand in the art people can make when allowed to flourish.
@TheYoungVulnerableAnimeGirls5 ай бұрын
Pirate anime. Profit. Stop giving money to streaming services. Take the content you want, watch it, and decide with your wallet if it's worth your money. Where we get the same amount of shows (maybe some more than others with some exclusives here and there) but their services and quality differ. Which will be the key difference for consumers to choose what platform they should watch the newest anime series. Crunchyroll are becoming so lazy with their subs as well. The trouble is one is seen as acceptable and normal, and the other is not despite the same principles. The actual economics at play is within the business that makes the art. 26:10 I think that MUBI has a version of this kind of value add that you describe. You can't make playlists of course, but there is a social aspect in that you can leave ratings on movies and see what your friends have in their watchlist etc. There is also a discovery aspect to it with genre groups and filmographies that are curated by people every month. A lot of these movies are also more on the obscure side with some being difficult to find even through piracy. I admit that MUBI is in a niche because their selection is geared towards cinephiles, but some of these concepts can be applied to streaming services with a more general audience.

two ways to maybe create value for the users of streaming platforms: add more community features, like comments. a written reviews feature would be good. another idea is adding supplementary things to the show, like character art, related songs (like the anime opening/ending), and interviews/commentary from the original creators. this could provide something outside of the content itself.
