Call me crazy but I think CR does still does support piracy to the point where some have claimed they will "leak" there own shows onto nyaa. A thing old monopolies used to do was to sell what ever they made at a complete loss to drive any competitors out of business, which while they can't outright directly to that anymore, they can indirectly do by making sure the piracy scene is a strong as possible. Outside of some shallow corporate speak about how "piracy bad" CR doesn't care so long as you also pirate from netflix, hydive, etc. their big enough to take a financial hit to make sure their weaker competitors will slowly die out and any new startup attempting to directly challenge their shortcomings (bad translations, horrible player, etc. etc.) will almost certainly be DOA.

Sony merged the two streaming services after buying Crunchyroll. They already owned Funimation and the shocker is. Crunchyroll was racking in loads more money. @anonymous01201 The excuse they gave was that too many people were posting "homophobic slurs" or offensive comments or whatever. The most common theory is that they're actually trying to keep people in the comments and reviews from pointing out when localizers change dialogue or context in the sub/dub to spread political propaganda, which has been an ongoing issue for a while now, and it's been getting more and more attention online. A less conspiratorial reason I've read is that storing all of that data, thousands of comments across thousands of shows forever, was just kinda expensive or time consuming to maintain, and they decided it wasn't a feature worth keeping.

Crunchyroll has gutted Right Stuf. It would have been the simplest thing to just rebrand and let it continue as-is, but now orders from Right Stuf have scaled back protective packaging and deliver *collectable* merchandise in sub-par condition. They refuse returns since disks play, despite dented, scratched, torn, and scuffed boxes. They also nixed comments on episodes. So many anime fans upset about that one. I'm praying Hidive has major face lift, or that Japan finally launches its own streaming service? Let Bones and other big studios pool together to make own streaming services. Maybe will lead to faster release of ep/series. Or let the anime studios make own sites with ads idc I'm so tired of Crunchyroll being monopoly. Them nuking comments has completely soured my experience. I watch dub so was a way me find new english dubbed (which can't trust CR cause simulcast alot of times only sub). Comments how I new what anime was talking about when they skipped things from manga like Overlord, or had people I always saw only on good anime, so.if I saw Them comment I knew was gonna be solid watch. Even review comments are gone. It's worse than when KZbin removed ability see dislikes only see likes so can't tell how bad video doing. I hope a sleeping giant comes out of blue an destroies CR whoever that may be. Or let someone (not Netflix/Disney) buy CR buring house and fix it to what it once was. With proper Subs and text translated on screen. Accurate skip buttons! Review comments, video comments. Actually make simulcast what was said to be and DUB ANIMES SAME TIME AND REALEASE IT WITH SUB. And fix for people buying merchandise cause have heard nothing but problems and issues on that end.

Along with a shitty product they also have shitty business practices. They pay their translators next to nothing while demanding fast turn-around. They refuse to employee union voice actors and the average salary for a CR employee is around 40k with the requirement that they live in the Bay Area. The streaming nightmare proved that sometimes it is not a service problem, it is a system problem. The way licenses work is the issue. Why are they fully exclusive deals rather than how supermarkets work where brands can sell themselves to multiple publishers? Of course, people won't compete with themselves, so for example disney content would stay on disney+, but what is the point in scattering the offerings to the wind? If anything, they could easily make timed exclusivity deals like how some newer videogames stay on only one plattform for a year or two and everyone else willing to engage with it gets a release later.

It's because IP laws encourage monopolistic behaviour, at the same time there's the case of music streaming where every major service has basically all the songs you'd want so the choice of your service just ends up being a question of user experience and whether it was bundled with something else you already use (eg- yt music and youtube premium, prime music and amazon prime). I don't understand why every player desires exclusivity in video streaming either, owing to my ignorance. But maybe it has something to do with the legacy of cable tv, they certainly seem to desire that with the proliferation of streaming bundles.

@@thelakeman2538 I actually think cable TV is a big part of it. For many decades movies and shows were only available on specific channels in specific packages from specific companies and providers. And what is happening today with streaming is just cable 2.0! But I don’t think this will last much longer. Give it another 5-10 year and I think moves and shows will become more like music where licensing can be made to multiple provider’s at once. Because these companies will realize they can make more money if there shows and programs are on 3-4 platforms instead of only one. And actually TV is literally dying more every day so they can’t just go back to cable TV again. When the money starts drying up and these companies don’t make money from just their own content they will be much more willing to license their own content to other platforms because it’s safer and more reliable revenue than the dwindling ad spammed streaming service. Personal services might still exist for a more complete collection of something like Disney and marvel content. But if wouldn’t be surprised if at least the more popular shows and movies go back to services like Netflix in 5-10 years.

You mean this anime only has 2 seasons and not 15? You mean I can watch it in Portuguese and Telugu, but not in English? Crunchyroll's UI also kills me. It's not bright like Funimation, its too crowded, Crunchyroll on my Roku TV doesn't let you filter for dubs, and for the love of Gawd Crunchyroll please add a filter to remove harem anime! And it might be just me, but why don't subtitles pop up when words are shown in the anime, like text messages or letters? Even when I put on subtitles, it doesn't work for me. 24:29 We've definitely regressed as far as TV shows go. It used to be you paid a cable package, got all the channels and could watch any show, but they aired in predefined slots and you had ads. DVRing solved the problem of air times as you could record the show and watch whenever, but people were still annoyed by ads. So netflix came along and said hey, for 10 usd a month you can watch everything, whenver you want with no ads. Now 15 years later we have countless streaming services, each with their own subscription, and they reintroduced ads. So the only thing that's argually better now than before is that it's on demand (which DVRs solved anyway decades ago). As for the consumer experience and pricing it's way worse than in the cable era, at least you could easily switch channels on the tv with a remote instead of needing 500 different apps and accounts.

As months went by I realized I never received anything not even an email update on my order so I had to email Crunchyroll 3 separate times to finally get an answer. I was essentially told that they were no longer available and I couldn't receive my order and didn't even offer a refund until I demanded it. Unfortunately, the truth why Crunchyroll don't have any real competitors in their niche is most likely because there isn't really a market for one. For most people with any kind of interest in Anime, just Netflix alone is enough. A streaming service like Crunchyroll only really matters to the "much more that casual"-fan, and even then, most of the people who subs to Crunchyroll do that to get access to a couple of shows they can't get anywhere else. The ultra-hardcore-anime superfan who even recognizes there is a problem with Crunchyroll is such a small part of the audience, and are already aware of and willing to engage in piracy, that creating a service that caters towards them would probably be financially impossible. The vast majority of fans of anything, including anime, are casual fans.

One of the few benefits to Crunchyroll's monopolization was supposed to be that they were the site that had all the anime, but they couldn't even do that right. There were still always shows they never got, shows that they only got censored, shows for which they were missing the OVAs and movies, shows where they had everything until they would suddenly disappear from the site, etc. Since we all had to use pirate sites anyway, they only have themselves to blame that a number of us just found it easier to use them exclusively.

All you need to prove that the anime streaming industry is screwed is the fact that no one had enough brains to get the license for Girls Band Cry. Also it's pretty clear that anime piracy is 100% a service problem when people who will blow hundreds or thousands on merch won't pay for a crunchyroll subscription, not to mention this invalidates crunchyroll's other reason for existence when the prevailing wisdom on how to actually support shows you like is just to buy the merch. Side note not really related to crunchyroll since they don't actually produce anything maybe instead of constantly jacking up prices streaming companies should figure out how to spend a reasonable amount of money on shows people want to watch not like traditional media hasn't done it for the last 60 years or anything, hell how many streaming services have NCIS or Grey's Anatomy outlived at this point?

I dont think it was mentioned here, but in another video they mentioned that they only pay translators $80 per epistode. However, honestly as someone who knows Japanese linguistically and also half Japanese and lived there, the $80 wage for translators is honestly believable, and I don't blame them. If you know Japanese, you'd notice most translations on Japanese (just in general too not just crunchyroll) have wrong translations. Typically, you get more rushed translations (partly due to low wages) for people doing these jobs. Honestly $80 I'd argue is on the upper hand as unless its a very long episode/movie, you're likely getting paid $30-50 an hour. Which is EXTREMELY HIGH wage. This is pretty common with freelance type of work which I also do sometimes (though different industry, art/animation stuff). Freelancing is not a job you do for a living, its a side hustle / hobby. Lots of people are also now cheating with the use of AI. The average quality has diminished a lot due to this in most translation things. Did you know that 90% of the cookbooks now are written by AI? Its crazy.

The comparison of looking at how people are not pirating music is an interesting one. They are not pirating music because the value of music has been eviscerated thanks to places like Spotify. The music artists make peanuts off of streaming. Due to the value of selling music diminishing, newer artists have to sign 360 deals with the labels. I am happy casual music listeners get a cheap deal, but it makes it more challenging for an artist to get off the ground.

Ngl, i hope what happened to netflix happens to spotify. I liked it at first, but it just kept getting more and more annoying with its ads. I always found it insulting how they go "imagine if you could have unlimited skips :0 or listen to songs in albums in the right order???" as if i hadnt already been doing that since primary school. I started using it again for the first time in a few months and now the ads are completely unskippable. I refuse to pay for premium partly out of spite, but mostly because i want my money to go to the artists who make the music i enjoy and spotify pays them so little you may as well pirate the music. Every streaming service is run by money-hungry assholes, is the problem. Nobody actually cares about creating spaces where people can connect with art (whether that art be films, animation, music, whatever), they dont even care about having a hand in the art people can make when allowed to flourish.

Before anyone responds to this, keep in mind Im taking a neutral stance neither for or against crunchy/piracy. This is just a personal opinion, but it feels more like you're advocating for pro piracy in all aspects. This is the trap you fall into when you make an argument with a preconceived notion, you seek facts and information that validate what you believe, where as a good argument challenges their own ideals and beliefs to prove that it is a superior option. I was under the impression that when i was getting into the video that crunchy was a bad company and youll explain why... but all i really took away is that you don't like X Y and Z about crunchy /what crunchy did and how piracy is always superior in every aspect. There is a philosophy that piracy always wins, likewise pirates will always pirate where non pirates will seek out non pirate options. Of course piracy is always going to provide superior results, Crunchy roll is bound by the laws of all the countries they get their shows from and piracy isn't. Crunchy they have a duty to focus on their products as well as properly pay people. I can't claim to know crunhies inner workings but I can at least try to rationalize and explain why piracy may be able to push out better quality (something I wish you did). Another thing I wanna put out there, music and videos should not be categorized together (though I know its tempting) a sound file is incredibly small compared to a video which requires a lot less service, hardware, and infrastructure. Companies like youtube can easily host copious amounts of songs for no investment at all as they just use what they already have to cut the cost. So I guess the whole music argument becomes kind of moot to me. You also claimed netflix was great for having all the shows in one spot rather than having a mess of streaming services all over the place.... so i dont understand why the same doesn't apply to crunchy. (Edit: Thought about this some more, but a very good example is how you talk about how crunchy handled princess connect but didnt really tell us what they did or why. Im stuck taking your word for it, without any facts to back up that opinion. To a lesser extent this applies to the crunchy store as well, you never told us what made it bad, just that it was bad.) Companies will do what companies do. It's a business at the end of the day and businesses need to make mistakes, learn lessons, and grow. Holding the past to them as a scarlet letter to invalidate them doesn't advance our situation. Advocating that priacy is better than crunchy doesn't advance the situation. I get mixed signals when you talk about how netflix having all the movies and shows in place being great, but then when crunchy does it its bad. I was under the impression that when i was getting into the video that crunchy was a bad company and youll explain why... but all i really took away is that you don't like crunchy...

Piracy doesn't always provide superior results. Generally people tend to fall into whatever method is the least inconvenient and lowest effort. It's why the rise of things like iTunes and Spotify reduced music piracy - for most people, a few dollars per month for something that let's them listen to virtually any track they want, at any time, with some basic functionality regarding organising and tailoring that music, is far more convenient than wasting time faffing around with P2P software, managing their own audio library and hunting for specific tracks around the web. That's kind of the point; Crunchyroll is a multi-million dollar corporation owned by one of the biggest and oldest entertainment giants in the industry. It shouldn't be getting outdone by a bunch of amateurs who simply run the episode through MTL and upload it to a P2P service - particularly not when there's adequate examples of how to actually provide a better service (both subscription and non-subscription) they could draw from.

I dunno man, he explained pretty clearly how Crunchyroll steamrolls their competition and then provides an inferior quality product because where else can you go for anime?
@widget5963
@widget5963 Ай бұрын
Wholesale pricing on AWS CloudFront (which isn't the cheapest by any means) is 2 cents a gigabyte, which is roughly the size of one episode of anime (for some reason - they could absolutely be encoded way smaller.) That's assuming you don't have your own CDN set up or are partnered with edge providers. For instance, Netflix almost doesn't pay for egress at all because they run their own cache servers in ISP centers. But I do think the music comparison is right. I used to download music off p2p at first, What later, and eventually just filesharing indexers. I've been a paying Spotify customer for about 10 years now and while I will still try to keep offline backups of some songs, I don't really use them. Spotify beat piracy by being more convenient without being outrageously priced. Meanwhile I've looked at getting a Crunchyroll subscription maybe 5 times now, and each time I decide against it. I would literally be making every part of watching anime worse for myself with the sole exception of not having to wait 2 minutes for the first episode to download. I'd sooner rent a TV show directly from iTunes, except that I don't really have a way to play it from there.

@@SonofSethoitae There is nothing inherently wrong about "steam rolling their competition". As the video points out competition creates innovation, it raises the bar for competitors to maintain quality and cost. But as for an inferior product, they dont change the audio or video and provide subs... you can dislike the interface all you want but at that point your nitpicking . The most important thing though is that Sony owns crunchyroll, as well as a massive chunk of anime studios/companies. This whole argument has always been pointless and misguided, and I still stand by what I said, that it seems more like it wants to send a message of priacy good, crunchy bad.
@SonofSethoitae

@@TomeTomeTomeTome You clearly don't understand what I meant by "steamrolling their competition". I mean _reducing the competition by buying all their competitors_ . Then they have no one to compete with and it doesn’t matter how bad the service is as a result. And interface problems and lack of features are absolutely not trivial matters just because you say so. You can't just declare that fundamental problems with the user experience are "nitpicking" to exempt them from criticism. And all of this isn't even commenting on how Crunchyroll gutted RightStuf and turned what was an excellent buying experience to a crapshoot of poor communication, ridiculous wait times, and unacceptable packaging for what are supposed to be collector's items. And now that they own RightStuf they're the only game in town, they have no one to hold them to a higher standard. For someone who claims to be neutral on the subject, you're going pretty far out of your way to bat for Crunchyroll.

The sooner humans realise their isn't currently an incentive in business to be consumer friendly. Because consumers don't demand it. Social media really screwed us. And we continue to only make it worse year after year.

I’m not saying the premise is wrong or anything, but I have to laugh when he admits he has never actually subscribed to these services himself. Not even during the “golden age”. He’s campaigning for better pro consumer business practices, but he’s never been a paying consumer. What’s the bar when he would join that mob? When does the service become good enough to be worth his money? You can’t blame someone for suspecting he would never subscribe himself, under any circumstance. Again, he’s not wrong, but he’s not exactly trustworthy to represent this fight either.

There's also 1 other important aspect here: if you live outside of the US, you're kinda fucked in many aspects. Fx. I live in Europe. Hulu doesn't work, as well as several other sites, Hidive recently pulled out of Europe, and due to licensing bullshit, several movies and shows also aren't available here. I shit you not, at one point One Piece and Attack on Titan weren't available in my region. Just think about that, 2 of the biggest anime ever, not available world-wide. The pirate sites on that other hand, do not have this issue, they're available wherever you might be. And yeah, I know technically you can just use a VPN... But not always. I remember trying to use a VPN on CR, and I got temporarily blocked from using that site until I turned off my VPN. Shit's fucked. so yeah, I swear by Aniwave these days too. The only problem with pirate sites is that they're routinely taken down so you need to go and find the next big one, and yet it's STILL more convenient than CR. Insane.

A classmate of mine basically made a streaming platform for his final project, with an option to play it publically so all users were at the same point, in one month and a half. He got the equivalent to B+ from that, as it wasn't that complex in the end apparently. Of course had he made it online, he'd need to put security and reliably fast servers, which he didn't, but the basis was there.

Yo dawg, don't show pirating websites on screen. If you don't want to be beholden to these streaming companies don't put a massive target on the back of the alternative. It just screams "He's over here guys, get him!" Edit: They just killed aniwave so guess I was right 🤷‍♂️🤣
