Something that's interesting to me, by way of comparison, is that in all the interviews I've seen and read with Japanese anime and manga creators, they are almost always very humble and say things along the lines of, "I am not a very good at all, but I hope that the viewers will appreciate what I am trying to do in my work." Even Ghibli's Takahata Isao was known for saying how bad he thought he was at drawing. Humility is key to foregrounding the work itself, and keeping the creator's ego in the background.

Hell, there're even some notable female hentai artists. These idiots really need to stop acting like female representation is a thing that needs to be pushed, because it isn't, far from it. All they're really doing is pissing people off by making shitty products that were made by horribly unqualified people only hired due to affirmative action, to say nothing of the dumbass, hateful comments they make on social media that are oftentimes misandrist (and ironically misogynist, given how much they infantalize and degrade the women they claim to be helping by acting like they're incapable of just doing this shit on their own merits).

Not to mention CLAMP (the all-female mangaka team of Cardcaptor Sakura fame), and how in the HELL can anyone forget Naoko Takeuchi and SAILOR FRIGGIN' MOON?!? Probably one of the most, if not THE most, successful 'Girl Power" anime/manga franchises EVER! Twenty-five years and still going strong, last I checked!

KaiserFrazer67: I actually made a different comment after posting the first one saying how I wanted to meet CLAMP and personally thank them for designing the characters for Code Geass. ovo Also I thought Sailor Moon was an obvious one? YamatoFukkatsu: Thank you for your entire comment. I believe Cras Sola is a female doujin artist, whose made my absolute favorite SuzaLulu doujins(SuzakuxLelouch from Code Geass) and did an absolutely wonderful job of keeping all the characters involved in character. Fylus might also be female.
@KaiserFrazer676 жыл бұрын
@5Geass: Sometimes the most obvious ones are the most overlooked and forgotten. Yes, I'm a SM fan, and a pretty late-coming fan at that (I was in my late 20's going on 30 when Sailor Moon first got popular here in the U.S. in the mid-90's and have just gained interest in it over the last 6 months or so). I've watched several of these KZbin critiques and everyone seems to forget mentioning Sailor Moon like it never even existed. (At least in this critique it was briefly shown onscreen, if not specifically mentioned.) Never mind it was IMHO the #1 game-changer in opening up many doors for women and girls in the anime/manga genre. NOT TO MENTION that it was, and remains, good enough to hold a male following as well as the demographic of teenage girls it was aimed at. I'm sure there are plenty of even earlier examples to choose from. It just strikes me as how incredulously blatant and asinine these statements are of the so-called "writers" of HGS. It couldn't be more obvious they're trying to push an SJW agenda over promoting their actual show. What they're saying they're trying to do has, in fact, been done over and over again dozens of times in the anime (and manga) field over DECADES, and everyone with even a beginner-level degree of familiarity with anime and manga knows better. Their promo trailer actually comes off as a scam to me--why are they trying to sell themselves and not their product? Perhaps the quality of their product isn't up to par, or as many suspect--an outright ripoff of something that's already been done? Hmmmm... Also do some digging on some of the people connected with this sham and you'll find, as several others have already pointed out in the comments section, that they're misandristic, hate-filled people who are all agenda and no creativity--not the least of which is Kate Leth. When these names come out and one starts to follow the paper trail--and one doesn't have to dig real deep (Marvel's Hellcat, anyone?)--the more it looks like this whole HGS project is little more than an elaborate shell game.
@5Geass6 жыл бұрын
Mhm. One of the first things they said in the trailer rubbed me the wrong way. The thing about the show having a lot of heart that they don't think any other studio can do anymore(paraphrasing). Like? How *absolutely condescending* can you be? I'm pretty sure they didn't mean it like that but? To outright say that just sounds incredibly rude. The moment I saw Kate Leth...oh lord. How quickly was her comic cancelled again? I just know it was pulled fairly quick.

We didn't mention this in the video, but I don't like how they say that a lot of other studios have forgotten 2D animation. I think that a lot of studios felt they had to make the switch to 3D animation because of costs and possibly they felt that it was more popular. What ever the case, they moved on not because they "forgot" but because they felt it was necessary. 2D currently isn't all that profitable. It doesn't get butts in seats like 3D animation does, and considering it's more expensive to do 2D animation, it's not worth the risk. It's not like animation is completely lost in terms of 2D hand drawn animation. But it's a more niche market, the two switching places in the last 10-15 years. But you still need hand drawn storyboards. There are instances where 2D and 3D are blended together for a hybrid. I think these women don't know what the heck they're talking about.

A really interesting perspective & most of us would agree but as someone stated, the marketing strategy for diversity is used as a cheap tool. They are like "look at us, how diverse & holy we are"... they are acting like they are heroes of the world & that any criticism is pure evil & taboo. Anime, manga & novels are the most diverse industry in terms of creators & content. We have gender bender, cross dressers, shounen-ai, yuri, yaoi & so on. The idea that they want to bring their crap to the anime industry is insulting & it is trying to force people into their agenda. It is true that creators are treated like crap... that's the biggest issue, not the diversity crap. Back to the point... if they really cared for their cause of diversity & inclusivity... they would create something that does not need to tell us how diverse it is, it will prove that itself. There was a manga I read where a boy wanted to be a girl or a woman... that was some good writing & good story... nothing was pushed but it was really good. The reason why we call them swjs is because they do not care for their cause, they do not want to convince or share their part of their story... they want to force others to accept everything they do without doubt or criticism, for them it is either you accept us or don't, if you don't you are nazi, hitler, sexist & so on. If they cared for their cause, they would have considered the best way to win people over. Instead of forcing them into stuff or making cheap & crappy quality stuff... then when it is bad... "look at the sinners, they dared to trample over our sacred cause". Load of crap, anime, manga & novels are about the content.. about quality & good story/characters.

Yes. For an example, Riri WIlliams, Ironheart, the black female Iron Man replacement had a flashback to when she was younger, in it she said she wanted to be a scientist, and her teacher said it was a great idea, and Riri was upset the teacher didn't tell her she can't do it. She literally was upset someone didn't stomp her dreams down so she could bravely fight back against the "oppression" she had to deal with as a black woman. This scene encapsulated all that NPCs want and think. If they are not victims they have nothing.
@ReverendSyn6 жыл бұрын
If they were truly doing this out of any sense of doing OBJECTIVE good, they wouldn't release press statements crowing about how woke and progressive they are. That's the whole thing about doing good, you aren't supposed to expect a reward for it. Being a hero means doing what you feel is right no matter what it costs you. Wanting to do good shouldn't exempt you from criticism. If you put ANYTHING out there, you should be prepared for the possibility of rejection. A thick skin should be required. You cannot reap the rewards for success if you arent also prepared to deal with rejection. That's how life is. Look at William Shatner. He KNOWS what people think of his acting. He KNOWS he can't sing. HE DOESN'T GIVE A SHIT. This is a man who knows the risks of putting yourself out there and handles criticism like a champ. He still makes albums because he's having fun doing it.

I think what hurt them was pushing the diversity and the overconfidence that they are breaking new ground and going to save 2D animation from extinction. If they had produced a trailer that did more showcasing of the characters, the world, maybe showing small test animations or letting people hear the voice actors things wouldn't have become so volatile. I also think it might have been intentional. It's hard to see how they think they can profit from this trailer unless they are sitting in a creative bubble that echo chambers this sort of thing is good and the way they should be approaching things.

I absolutely agree with everything said in this video. One thing you guys've done that no one else I've seen has (thus far), is give visual examples of a well done trailer of a similar premise. Good on you! Great vid!

One thing I've noticed is the High Guardian Spice characters look almost IDENTICAL to the ENDRO! characters along with their perceived character types. The pink one is the hero, the blue one the mage, the yellow one is the warrior and the red/purple one is the ranger and an elf.

I am not really an anime fan myself, but having been into science fiction and seeing what has happened to Star Trek, Doctor Who, and Star Wars the last several years, I know how this plays out. This so called "trailer" is setting up the reasons for failure, before even having a sample of the product. Here is a summary of the "trailer": "We are making a cartoon. We are mostly woman who look weird and are arrogant as hell making it easy as hell to not like us. When our product fails we, with Crunchyroll, will attack fans of anime and cry to media outlets about the right wing menbabies." I am not creative right now having just got out of bed, but I think you get the idea. The reason this "trailer" exist is guilt people into watching it, put HSG above any criticism, and make Crunchyroll think twice before cancelling it. If this show is bad then Crunchyroll will have to still keep in in production or face the fury of women's scorn.
@andrewtaylor9406 жыл бұрын
Joseph Nichols agreed! But I think that the “Sony Ghostbusters” marketing plan has quickly lost its ability to intimidate. Too many companies have lost too much money following this path at this point. I mean a Star Wars movie didn’t even break even after they pulled this stunt on the prior one. Electronic Arts stock just tanked on the backlash caused by a similar campaign (“damn dirty sexist nerds! Of course WW2 was won by the actions of ass kicking female cyborg super soldiers! It’s bigoted to expect otherwise in an authentic WW2 simulation game!”)

The art style that High Guardian, Steven Verse, and Teen Titans GO has become a serious cancer in America. How can artists seriously make such childish art/animations and be proud of it? Unless you're a kids show like Dexter's Lab or Johnny Bravo, you should be making something better. Hell Tom and Jerry has FAR superior animation and it's only a children's cartoon!

It is impossible to judge a product of what you don't even have the most basic information. A trailer is there to SELL something, this has NOTHING to sell. Yeah, at most the political leaning behind the creators, but... that doesn't mean quality. I want to see either something quick and fun or a quality product. I don't have good feelings about this. But we shall see if it even gets noticed once it gets out in 2019. It probably will be forgotten by then. And get canceled after the first series for failing to be noticed. You don't have much time to draw attention to yourself and your product so you have to do it RIGHT the FIRST TIME. This trailer ... sold us nothing.

One issue. Those who will take any criticisms as personal attacks generally don't care what criticism they get, toxic or not anyone who gets offended by words online seems to get offended all the time anyway. It doesn't help, but I think creators, especially those that tout diversity as #1 need to stop thinking they are making the next grand masterpiece.

What is unique about HGS?? The studio rarely talked about HGS; their main focus is the studio and how much diverse these women are (100% writing staff), even though majority of it is not diverse. raye doesn't care about his show at all and neither does the other people. the only thing they briefly mention in that trailer, he said; there were four girls going to magic school: Little Witch Academia RWBY Utena: Revoluntionary Girl Madoka Magica Soul Eater Not So ... original?? great job, guys.

I think even animation like Teen Titans and Avatar was done in foreign country in sweet shop like condition to save money. Even in japan animator are working in that condition I imagine this new animation group following the trend of pop up game company, in that there worker getting over paid and eventually will lose more money and go out of business If they using low quality animation put the rest of the money in storytelling or action. Steven universe and Rwby may have low quality art but it has some good fight scene.

I’m sure that the “all female” crew that we see are just the writers and designers. The actual task of animating it will be farmed out to a Korean sweat shop as in the norm. That’s the reason we don’t see any actual animation samples. They don’t have any. They will be outsourcing those overseas to a not so Woke studio.

@Kyuushi944 жыл бұрын
jakzine540 Do you mean with High Guardian Spice? Because I don’t think we can say anything about a show that... never happened. Like, yeah, the trailer wasn’t a smart way to market, but, hey, at least it isn’t talking about rebooting a beloved franchise. And then, the show, while I hear they’re done putting it together, has had one 5-second spot in a collage-style trailer since this, and not even it’s own proper trailer since. There’s virtually nothing to have thoughts on, in that area.
@aurea.5 жыл бұрын
The trailer's start and end leave such a bad taste in your mouth. I don't know if it was intentional (no such thing as bad publicity...) or if the creators are that delusional, but their claims are just so objectively and laughably false, not to mention a little arrogant. I'm not surprised they got so much backlash.

They disabled likes/dislikes and comments because they are too affraid of criticism. There could've been some toxic comments. And there could've been even some constructive critiques. But they do not care. They want only positive responses because they are too fragile to handle anything else. And the trailer? I could do better trailer by myself with 0 experience in making trailers and I know it because their "trailer" is a fucking disaster. They are antagonizing their potential audience with the first line in the goddamn "trailer".

Why do these people push diversity, feminism and relatability over a good story? The characters are cute... Kinda. But that's not all there is to making a cartoon. When you make your team base on gender and not skill no matter which one the thing will be worse for it, now that's not to say a team that's all one gender is bad no matter what but when you build your team base on one gender or race or anything like that it shows that you care more about being p.c over making a good show.

I haven't been paying attention but, for what's worth, I'd like to address a different subset of matters... While one could make various points about this or that aspect, I would like to focus on the realism of the equipment as it pertains to the characters; for if it is objectionable (and I must stress that: it is) to overly empower one type of character, namely the insanely bulky male hero with their ridiculous battle-axe, frankly I can't buy why the same shouldn't apply to the even more absurd power fantasy of the tiny girl that wields the same weapon as if it were made out of Styrofoam. There are other aspects to this problem (most notably how absurd the weapons and armours often are -- I mean, do you see any of the girls in the poster *_actually_* wearing armour!?), but this speaks volumes to me. And I can't stress this enough: I have the same sort of issue when male characters are also portrayed wielding ridiculous weapons and practically sporting no armour whatsoever; so my critique here is more in line with: "How can you make an even *_worse_* mistake than the predecessors we're rightfully criticizing for their short-comings?" That is not to say that the fantastical is inexcusable; that couldn't be further from the truth. But this violation of how things *should* behave if they were anywhere near real is just downright inane and should be done away with.

Personally, what I did not like about the trailer was that they showed absolutely nothing about the show. Uncolored backgrounds, conceptual designs that are far from be the approved final designs and we did not even know the names of the characters. There is not even a definite style. They should not show this animation work at such an early stage where there is no even animation to begin with.
