It's mentioned several times that he used to be a prodigy among the Parasite candidates, but that changed after a certain incident. The only reason he wasn't "pruned" despite his incredibly low synchro rates is because Dr. Franxx was interested in seeing how he and 02 would develop, thus being labeled a "special specimen" or something along those lines, I forget the exact phrasing. He can only pilot with 02 for a while... because his memories had been tampered with, drastically changing his nature and personality. Once he regains them after episode 13, he can match up well with Ichigo, for example, as seen in 15. But his best match is still 02, specifically because they trust each other to death.

But I'd like to believe that as of episode 15, the reason why Strelizia gains a new boost in sheer power and all but pimp-slaps Gran Crevasse's defenses is because of their bond and not their biological link as a Klaxosaur and Saurified Human.

From my understanding the women become part of the franxx and take the same dmg that the franxx take the men pilot it I'm assuming by influencing the movement of the franxx and when the guy and the girl are on the same page their movements are synchronized and it allows both of them to use the franxx to their fullest potential

Yeah it seems like the girls are essentially transferring their consciousness into the Franxx and effectively determine the power of the mecha using their energy and it seems like they can also control the movement the machine, while the boys also contribute energy, handle the weapons, and are able to handle the speed thus both are needed to produce a well-functioning combat machine. That's why Zero Two is so special, because (1) Her Klaxosaur blood, by itself, seems to amplify her Franxx's ability making it even more of a powerhouse and (2) She can basically solo pilot Strelizia and still be a threat, which is implied to be a seemingly-impossible feat. What I want to know is what the heck happened to Mitsuru when he tried to co-pilot Strelizia with Zero Two. I'm assuming that her "going full out" was her haphazardly flinging the robot around without concern for her co-pilot, thus injuring him and knocking him unconscious, and, since he wasn't as synchronized with her as Hiro is, he just couldn't keep up with her.
