One must remember that the Black Templar’s are successors of the Imperial Fists, and though they may be zealots of the Imperial Creed they are tactical, strategic, and thoughtful when it comes to war. The Black Templar’s have been waging a never ending crusade against the enemies of mankind, and with comes tactics that have prevailed against all kinds of foes. A Black Templar’s squad is its most basic form of warfare for them.

‘The coming of the Angels of Death often presages disaster.’ - Lieutenant Sanjeed Ghaskar of the Jopal indentured squadrons ‘We go only where disaster is, this is true,’ Sword Brother Brusc. 'THE RAMP OF the Land Raider dropped open, lowered by whining hydraulics, and the LCD-shot gloom of the interior of the tank was suddenly bathed in the dirty sepia light of the contested marshlands. Kill-team Wolfram was ready. With a shout of 'For Solemnus!' the Templars burst from the back of the Land Raider, weapons held ready for battle, led by their inspiring Chaplain - his crozius arcanum held high - and Emperor's Champion Ansgar - the Black Sword of the Solemnus Crusade pointing the way towards the enemy. Ten battle-brothers came after Wolfram and Ansgar and comprised the rest of the kill-team. Running at the Chaplain's side was his ever-present bodyguard Koldo, boltgun held low in front of him, ready to dispense a stream of whickering fire should any oppose him or his master. Behind them came the white-armoured Brother-Apothecary Bliant and the rest of the original Squad Wolfram - Brother Lairgnen, Initiate Hebron and Brother-Initiate Gildas. Then came Baldulf, Huarwar and Larce, with Veteran Brother Kemen and heavy weapons trooper Brother Clust effectively forming the rearguard... SQUAD WOLFRAM SPLIT left and right, Koldo, Lairgnen, Hebron and Gildas peppering the scaly, armoured hide of the monster with bolter fire. With a screaming roar of its own, Brother Jarold gave fire with his assault cannon, the spinning weapon becoming obscured by smoke and muzzle-flash. Empty shell cases rained down around the dreadnought and splashed into the swamp as Jarold's ammunition hoppers maintained a ready supply of explosive bullet-shells to the cannon. The dreadnought's assault tore great chunks of meat and muscle from the squiggoth's flanks but did nothing to slow the beast. And then the monster was past them, running down a trotting sentinel squadron. 'Brothers, onward!' Chaplain Wolfram commanded. It was not their place to see this battle through to its conclusion. They had even greater goals to achieve. There was more a stake here than strategic control of the Plague Marshes. Servos protested as the Marines' armoured suits compensated for the sucking grip of the swamp as the Templars struggled to keep pace with their Chaplain. Inside their all-enclosing suits of power armour, each Templar's body temperature was regulated so that he did not overheat in the extreme humidity of the jungles or cook in the direct heat of the sun, when it actually managed to break through the miasmic cloud hanging over the marshlands. Then there were orks swarming towards them out of the fumy fog. Ansgar swung his crackling sword, cutting down an ork as it ran at him out of the mist. His blow bifurcated its body from neck to hip, the two halves splashing into the filmy brown water. Clouds of insects buzzed angrily around the Black Templars and their adversaries. But the sting-flies did not trouble the Marines, enclosed within their power armour. Neither did they trouble the orks, the aliens' war-painted hides apparently as tough as leather armour. And then the sodden mire began to give way to firmer patches of ground as it rose towards the gnarled shapes of mangrove trees that appeared out of the marsh-mist in front of them. The lowing of squiggoths, the harassed barks of their goaders, the revving engines of the armoured units and the clamour of the battle being fought behind them was being swallowed up by the insidious mists. Squad Wolfram met little resistance, however, cutting through the last lines of the noticeably weaker rearguard of the feral ork force. And then the Templars, including Brother-Dreadnought Jarold, were through and into the thickets of mangrove trees, the forest floor underfoot becoming more solid with every emboldened, striding step. Tendrils of greasy vapour slithered between the wet black trunks as if to ensnare them within their clammy coils. They were past the last line of resistance. The squad paused for a moment in the gloom enveloping the sheltering black trees and the lingering mist, Brother Jarold on overwatch behind them like some adamantium colossus amidst the spindly trunks and capering root-boles, as the Chaplain checked Koldo's auspex readings. Then he pointed with the bladed head of his crozius through the trees into the cloying gloom. 'Brothers.' Wolfram said, 'time is now our adversary if we are to recover the holy treasure we seek - the flesh of our flesh. The seed of our brethren of Fighting Company Gerhard waits to be found, somewhere in these jungles, at the heart of darkness.' Now their mission could really begin. 'We head for the last known position of Castellan Gerhard's company in the hope that we will find the place where they fought and where they fell, consecrating the ground there with their holy blood.' 'Forward, brothers!' Ansgar declared, raising his gleaming black blade above his head, its keen edge already glistening with the sticky ichor of butchered orks. 'For Fighting Company Gerhard. For Solemnus. Forward we go in the Emperor's name!' 'No pity.' Wolfram declared, his voice like steel. 'No remorse.' Ansgar intoned. 'No fear.' the kill-team affirmed, concluding the mantra. And then they were gone, into the mists, into the jungle, into the gathering gloom, to face whatever fate Ansgar's visions promised them...' - Templars form the Squad Wolfram, of the Fighting Company Gerhard(Solemnus Crusade) During the Xenocide campgain, III War For Armageddon.

I'm a Tyranid player on the tabletop, but I remember it was the Black Templars that captured my imagination 18 years ago and got me into 40K for this very reason: they're knights. In space. Simple as that, and you nailed it, brother. When I'm done painting this overly large army of plastic death cockroaches, I'm definitely making Templars.

I swear by crusader squads, I have at least 2 seconds in games. One is lead by a duel lightning claw sword brother, the other squad is lead by sword brother armed with power sword and combi-flamer. The latter is usually in a squad with a flamer.

The Black Templar novel Crusade for Armageddon is a really great look into their rituals especially what a Templar does in his dorm when observing prayers and rights. As well as an awesome scene when a Black Templar experiences a vision from The Emperor and becomes an Emperor’s Champion!

@@baldermort I have been sorely tempted with some pretties that I can't use from time to time ...... Cough cough basically every time I visit forgeworld cough ( or half the time when a certain brothers video gets me excited over army's I haven't collected lol). Heck I have the Belladonna model from Necromunda coming with my lovely hag. Do I or will i ever play Necromunda? No, and who knows, maybe whenever Nurgle gets done spreading his love amongst us. I sure as heck bought her though ( as well as a box of Escher ladies), I turned the gals into chaos cultists for my Night Lords army and will probably use Belladonna as their leader ( if that's legal)
