The Abrams is designed to work as part of a coordinated Battalion. It requires Air Support (i.e. Attack Helicopters, A10, etc), IFV, Artillery, Reconnaissance to be effective. If you send the tank in groups of 3 or 4 without that support. Let’s just say it’s a bad day.

It does not look like the Ukrainian’s are deploying them correctly. The Ukrainian’ s appear to be deploying them in groups of 2 to 4. With no infantry or air support. This is probably due to manpower and equipment shortage. Also, from what I understand the Ukrainian’s do not have air assets/air superiority on the battlefield. The way it should work is tanks defend infantry from other tanks or fortified positions ( i.e. trenches, buildings and bunkers). Infantry defend the tanks from enemy infantry that might be armed with anti tank weapons, scout ahead to make certain a tank doesn’t hit a mine/ied, and try to make certain a tank is not surprised by a situation. Air assets would tend to be used to suppress enemy aircraft. What this conflict has proven is tanks also need a defense against drones. The German Gepard looks promising or some other anti aircraft vehicle. All these units would need time to train to work together. Something that the Ukrainian’s don’t have.

The depleted uranium armor was removed from these tanks before Ukraine received them. Not to mention that they don't have reactive armor installed on them. Also, the M1A2 is designed to be used as single piece of a much larger battle group. Normally, they would be networked with Apaches, UAV's, AWACS, satellites, ground forces, etc that give them a battlefield awareness that is simply not present in Ukraine. Nothing against Ukraine, but they are not set up to be able to capitalize on the strengths of the Abrams. They are hard to maintain, they are fuel guzzlers, and they are grumpy bitches when taken out of their element. That's why the Bradley is doing better. At least they can move quickly and with some agility. The T-80 BVM is much better suited for the type of warfare Ukraine is having to wage, especially in the operational environment that they have. Not to mention it's smaller, lighter, and more agile which is really helpful in this theatre.

US didn't even gave them proper ammunition, they gave them completely useless to the core (in this conflict) APFSDS munition. So they can't even engage infantry and because of warfare's nature never sees a tank before M1s getting hunted by drones. The tank essentially completely harmless in Ukraine's warfare. It can't do anything to tanks, because it will never see one, it can't do anything to infantry because tank is armed with APFSDS (against tanks) and they can't do shit to building because again APFSDS and extremely short range. So that's why they called empty tin cans. Not because of armor or anything, but because it's practically useless vehicle. This is just anecdotal.
