Quick tip from a choir nerd- try keeping your vowels more vertical than horizontal. So instead of singing I made you cry sing: ahh mahduh yuuuhhh crahhhhyuh. It might sound silly singing it but it will come out as a much better I made you cry.

In general, yes, this is good advice. But for barbershop this isn't the best move. Barbershop is specifically designed for a flatter, more American, vowel sound. The goal isn't primarily to have a round, vocal sound. The flatter vowels make the chords ring. I was once privileged to sit in on a British barbershop group during rehearsal. They were singing "What a Wonderful World." Their tendency was to sing in this vertical way: "Whaht a Wondehful Woald." But their director understood that barbershop is an American style and was working hard with them to get their vowels more horizontal. This allowed the barbershop harmonies to ring out!

(why) do I hear a ninth in there?
@flyingspirit3549
@flyingspirit3549 4 жыл бұрын
Because it is there, as Dflat9, somewhat disguised by the absence of the root note. It appears as the first chord of the third measure, composed of [missing root Dflat], F, Aflat, B (to make Dflat7), and Eflat (to make Dflat9 minus root).

@Didier van Someren Harmonic Overtones. If we analyze the harmonic series of the individual voices of the final ending chord, you're hearing it in a few places. Firstly, the 9th harmonic of the Bass voice. Additionally, the 3rd, 6th, and possibly 12th harmonic of the Baritone voice, and the 7th harmonic of the Lead voice. Possibly even the 9th harmonic of the Tenor post and the 18th harmonic of the bass if they are rich and resonant enough. All of those harmonic overtones combine together to create a really strong 9th tone. If we had to pinpoint it to one thing, it is all about the lock of a perfect 5th interval between bass and Bari. If they are dead on in tune, that 9th tone will always come through because the 3rd, 6th, 12th, and 24th harmonic of the 5th scale degree (Sol in moveable solfege, Bb in this example) in the chord are going to all be the 9th scale degree (Re in moveable solfege, or F natural in this case) and will line up in unison and octaves with the 9th and 18th harmonics from the 1st scale degree (Do in moveable solfege, Eb in this case) P.s. :why is the lead on the top line and Tenor on the second line? Never seen it like that before.

I'm not sure but I don't think the Bass is really a Bass because that low Eb sounded like a mix of chest and fry but I could be wrong

It's hard to hear properly, but I don't think there us any fry in that Eb. I guess the bass is a bass, but he's most likely a high bass (basso cantante)
