*Looks at my icon*................... I know very well who Axel/Lea is XD He is Number VIII of Organization XIII, he is also known as The Flurry of Dancing Flames. He is Roxas' best friend and his mentor. He was also Saix's former best friend. The correct name for his Chakrams is Eternal Flames. Before Roxas came along, Axel and Saix had a plan relating to the Organization. I don't remember much of the plan, but I'm guessing it had something to do with taking over the Organization or something like that. But unfortunately, Saix grew more loyal to Xemnas and Axel grew closer to Roxas and Xion. I would also like to point out that Axel/Lea is from Radiant Gardens where most of the Organization are also from. He was meant to be killed off TWICE, but due to fans loving him so much, he came back in Kingdom Hearts II (when he was meant to be killed off in CoM) and then again in DDD (when he was meant to be killed off for good in KHII) Another little well-known fact, he is voiced by Quinton Flynn, who also voiced Reno from Final Fantasy. Which is ironic because both Reno and Axel/Lea are described to be similar in several ways. Now THAT was full-on nerd mode. I've been playing Kingdom Heats since I was five years old (That's how old I was when the game came out here in America). So my childhood was basically Kingdom Hearts (And Harry Potter, but that's for another story ;) Also, your girlfriend doesn't know what she's missing out on.

Ah I have you seen Advent Children? One of the very few animation's based upon a video game I enjoyed. Yeah Kingdom Hearts was basically my childhood. That, harry potter, Ty the Tasmanian Tiger, Pokémon and Metal Gear Solid :D Also as to Reno and Axel's similar appearance, apparently Nomura enjoyed that character's design. But that could just be a rumour.
