Haven't seen anything from you in a couple of weeks. I hope all is well with you.

I am okay, yes. The schedule has been changed to one video per two weeks, but in addition to that I've had to postpone the next video a bit.

Great video Cornelius! At the beginning it says the video is about "Call Register" instead of "Cry", you may want to fix that!

OOF. KZbin does not allow me to edit videos after having uploaded them. All I can do is unlist the video and upload a fixed version :/ Edit: well, for the time being I will just have to let it stand. At some later point I will probably reupload it. In the meantime, I will just cut the intro from this video.

@@VoiceStudioEast For the future, what about releasing the video on Discord in advance so that we can look at it before you publish it? We can help with some proofreading/fixing stuff and avoid frustration later.

@@deBarnik It will sap the initial momentum of hte video though, which is important for getting exposure and for growing the channel.

is cry register curbing?
@VoiceStudioEast

Edge-like or Overdrive-like Neutral in Reduced Density, as well as Edge and Overdrive in Reduced Density, provided that these have a contained rather than restrained character, are cry register. Edge and Overdrive in Reduced Density may also sometimes be referred to as Curbing for simplicity (if the student has not been introduced to density as a concept independent of mode). So there is certainly a relation between cry register and Curbing, but they are not quite the same thing.

What is cry register in physical terms? What musculature is producing the "cry"? Where should I focus my attention on in terms of vocal chords/vocal tract?
@VoiceStudioEast
@VoiceStudioEast Ай бұрын
I am not quite sure but I suspect it's a combination of the palatopharyngeus and lateral cricoarytenoid muscles. I suggest not focusing your attention on something inside your vocal tract or larynx. That will tend to lead to an instinctual restraint that will get you stuck in mixed voice instead. It is usually better to focus on the sound itself, or on the affect associated with the sound.

@@VoiceStudioEast The "raise the eyebrows" advice unfortunately doesn't work out for me. There are many different sounds I can produce which sound like a cry, including the pharyngeal voice itself, curbing (or "applying hold"), belty sounds, quacky sounds, sounds with laryngeal twang, pharyngeal twang, etc. All of this sounds like a cry to me so it's quite confusing to understand how to obtain the "cry quality" and mostly the "cry register". A related question which might help would be... How does the cry register map into cvt? That might help a little bit.

@@musikkamagga3770 It's not "raise the eyebrows", it's "upturn the eyebrows", ie, raise only the most medial part. If all those different sounds resemble a cry, it is quite likely that you are instinctively adding cry to a lot of coordinations. This is quite common. The fact that your belting sounds like crying is especially telling. Of course, the only way I could tell for sure is by hearing it. In CVT terms, cry register corresponds to the "contained character" that can be achieved in RD Edge, RD Overdrive, and RD Neutral. The "restrained character" on the other hand is characteristic of mixed voice and sometimes falsetto.
