Here in Canada during the covid lockdown my father has been living in a extended Care facility which was also in lock down when he passed away. His health was continuously fading and I was not allowed in to see him for months. With the time of his passing drawing near and with him no longer being able to verbally communicate I had to say my goodbyes to him over a video call. During the call I played this song for him and I could see the tears starting to roll down his face. At that moment I knew he could still hear, and understand everything that was being said to him. And just how much I loved him and was proud to be his son. It was the hardest time I have ever faced in my life because I just wanted to be there to hold his hand before his time came. This song will forever remind me of that moment.

I was a child when my father died, they wouldn't let me see him; the presence of a child of a terminal ward was, I think, too upsetting. They wheeled my father out on the balcony and I was able to wave to him from the grounds of the hospital. I am 61 now and the memories of my father are the most sacred thing I posses.

James Blunt's father Charles, himself a kidney donor, was diagnosed with stage four chronic kidney disease. Blunt wrote "Monsters" to "express his feelings about his father and his illness, almost as if it's a touching farewell to his father". this song gets me every time and I'm an old git thanks and keep safe.

Four years ago from now I sat every day for two weeks with my Dad as he was unconscious and we waited for his last breath. I talked to him, sang (badly) to him and held his hand. I told him over and over not to be afraid. I don't know if somewhere inside he heard. This song takes me right back there and breaks my heart. I don't know how he managed to sing it with so much emotion, yet do it so beautifully.

My Dad died recently and i was at his bedside right before he passed. My family had called and told me they were disconnecting his life support systems because at 92 and suffering from lung, prostate and throat cancer, he would never get better. My father and i had a love hate relationship most of our adult life, and sometimes it had gotten real bad. In his later years we did patch up differences though and when i was at his bedside, although he couldn't talk or open his eyes, when he heard my voice he reached over, grabbed my hand and pulled it to his chest. He struggled to say something but could not. I talked to him and told him how great a father and husband he had been, He continued to pull my hand to his chest. I didn't resist. I am glad that happened before he passed. I am glad things were good between us before he died. I hope all you guys will go be with your parents and make them know how much you love them. You may not have the chance again like i did. Thanks for the video. It was heartwrenching but still beautiful.

His dad had stage 4 kidney failure when James wrote this and a donor couldn't be found. After the video was released a distant cousin came forward who was a match. He donated all the profits from this song to Help For Hero's a UK veterans charity (both him and his dad were in the military). They did this in one take and at the end everyone in the studio was crying except James' dad who said 'why all this I'm not gone yet'.

James wrote this for his father when he only had weeks left. He wanted something he could keep of him. He would only sing one take of the song, he lost the note twice in the higher register. When he finished everyone there including him and his crew were crying. Then his Dad told them he wasn’t dead yet. He got a kidney transplant from a distant cousin no one knew of who has the same name as his Dad. No one else in the family was a match or on any register. He is doing really well now. I lost my Dad at age 51. I don’t think anyone can listen to this song and not relate in anyway. It gets me every time. I remember my Daddy carrying me to bed and saying my prayers with me. Making room in his bed when I had a bad dream. Picking me up and dancing with me. Riding on his shoulders to get the evening newspaper. This song hits me with all of these memories and more. It is beautiful.

This song is heart-wrenching but... Looking at the dad in the video, he's perfectly calm. British "stiff upper lip." Even though at the time of filming, he was fully expected to die. It turns out that he did end up getting an organ donor and lived but at that moment neither him nor his son could have known that. And yet he was almost angelically calm throughout. Very British of him.

This song is one of those which can bring down the toughest and most unemotional people and render them as emotional wrecks, pretty much like 'Who Wants To Live Forever' by Queen. James Blunt is a British former military man (Captain I believe) and his voice and the raw emotion he portrays are absolutely legitimate. A beautiful song written and performed by a really wonderful artist. If you have no reaction to this song, you'd better call an undertaker.
