The crypt of the Colonia Guell - a UNESCO World Heritage Site - is an unfinished and unknown masterpiece by the Catalan architect Antonio Gaudi. It was in a textile industry colony whose owner was Eusebi Guell, Gaudí's main patron.
Gaudí designed a church, the first stone of which was laid in 1908, 10 years after the order. The famous model of the upside-down funicular no longer exists, so it was impossible to continue the work. Numerous photographs have been preserved, but the final plan is not known.
Today, a (supposedly) complex model can be seen in the Museum of the Basilica of the Sagrada Família, a simpler one in the exhibition center of the Colonia Güell, in La Pedrera, and in the Diocesan Museum of Barcelona, etc.
Gaudí used the work on the crypt as a trial for the Sagrada Familia.
It is located on the sloping ground and envisaged a church with two naves, lower and upper, with side towers and a dome 40 meters high. They built the crypt, but abandoned the project without building the upper part.
It is in Santa Coloma de Cervelló, about 20 minutes drive from Barcelona. It can be easily visited by FGC train (Ferrocarrils de la Generalitat de Catalunya).
FGC Station - Colonia Güell.
If you are Gaudi's fan, you have to see it!
