Try using the "Sort" button in your Storage and Inventory, It not only sorts the Items in order, but it also condenses Storage slots when you have odd Iron or Copper items in storage.

The nickel asteroids are in the red area that you chickened out of going into. But you should make the engineers suit and you can use the hammer & Laser on the enemies within!

The oxygen station is located near the in asteroid mine and looks like antenna debris, if I remember correctly.
