I love your show; As a former crypto miner and a lover of games, my opinion may be bias but I believe proof of work is superior for many reasons most of which you stated here. The best reason for me is that no one person can dictate the rules or change the rules on the fly. The rules are clear for all to see. Any change in the rules has to be voted on by everybody and as long as you play by the rules you get paid. It doesn't matter if you have $5,000 invested or $500 million as long as you have skin in the game. If you act badly or even try to, you can be pruned from the network. It's game theory, and the chain that plays the game the best right now is Bitcoin. Don't get me wrong, I'm invested in other cryptos and I have high hopes for some of them, but for right now...

A point missed by this video: It is well accepted by mathematicians that a valid consensus mechanism must satisfy at least one of 2 criteria, a well defined set of validators, or a random element. Proof of work uses guessing of the highly random number to satisfy some hash function, and works without a well defined set of operating validators. Proof of stake or authority generates a list of validators. And it's not sufficient that the block generator for a round win whatever selection criteria is used. They must produce a block that is plausibly valid given the rules of the blockchain. An invalid block should be rejected by following block generators. Guard nodes may also serve to more rapidly validate or (hopefully very rare) reject a block,. A variation on this I've been thinking of is unorganized sentries keeping watch for activity on specific elements of interest, with a means to carp on a block which breaks the rules.

Great content as always Guy! Just one comment, it`s a consensus mechanism and not algorithm. Algorithm is a sequence of steps that is done by a computer or someone isolate, whereas mechanism is sequence of steps to be done my a collective of people(using computers or not, multiple nodes for instance). Difference explained by Vitalik when talking abt consensus.

Most impressive consensus I've come accross so far is Cerberus. Can run on pretty much anything (I've seen people run it on Raspberry Pi's) and can dynamically scale up or down to as many TPS as needed. The more nodes, the faster it gets, without any upper limits. Meaning as the network grows so does throughput in TPS.

Lots of talk about the problems of other consensus outside PoW, no mention of the fact Bitcoin PoW is heavily centralized run on expensive (and often proprietary) ASIIC hardware on high energy mining farms affordable only by the mega rich, not the little guy. No mention either of Cardanos Ouroborous PoS, which answers many of the problems you have with PoS and has game theoritic basis to encourage decentralization without slashing or take custody of your coins. Your omissions are absolutely baffling.

Have you looked into Combinatorial POW Guy? Dan Hughes has submitted a white paper for peer review on this new consensus mechanism. His current Cerberus consensus protocol which distributes the ledger over a possible 2^256 shards with unlimited scalability and atomic composability has been math proven by the team at University of California (Davis), it's also just been proven in practice on a test network. arxiv. org /pdf/2008.04450v1 .pdf

OK Dude Guy: I've been trying to think of ways to get government 's hands off of being able to validate or dis-validate digital assets; and, to tax them. Somehow you have cultivated in me the idea that digital assets are not wanted by everyone. In fact, if you don't have a computer you cannot participate in the possessing of these properties. So if the US constitution holds inviolate the right of freedom of association then association by digital asset users ought not be taxable regardless of whether transacting those assets during such association takes place.
