Out of the 3 remasters I think Crysis 2 benefits the most from performance, RT and SVOGI. I ran Crysis 3 Remastered and wondered why it looked almost identical to the original, and then I watched the Digital Foundry video and can see they left out SVOGI and didn't use RT water reflections, so I wasn't going crazy after all!

They've added planar reflection to the water though, which can look pretty much as good as RT ones, but i am pretty sure it's even more taxing. I think the reason they didn't add RT to water here and C1R as well is because RT buffer is limited to 15M+ radius around the player, so outside of it RT doesn't apply and this water surfaces can be quite large (30-50m+), so they can't be covered fully by RT buffer and it would have look broken i think.

Imagine remastering C3 that has literally water everywhere and not adding water ray tracing.

Genuinely RT Shadows and AO would've been a better choice. The industrial spaces are probably the game's least impressive scenes, and having that instead would give a decent boost to those scenes and a massive boost to the outdoors.

Specular occlusion on rough surfaces adds up to realism, thanks for highlighting this in the video. It will take some time till people realise that objects should not glow in enclosed areas. RT totally nails this.

0:23 See this is what im talking. How does Crysis 3 an old game get how to add realistic reflections better than new brand new RT games. Look at the Window, It has reflections but you can still see through the glass. Too many games these days make the window a 100% reflective surface which is not right. You should still be able to look through the window even with slight reflections.

Not as impressive, Crysis 2 remaster on the other hand is incredible in comparison to Crysis 2. Not long kill counted the base games, May give these a revisit a few years from now though.

Comparisons for the other Crysis remasters coming soon™ Maybe its the city environment, but the reflections seem much more obvious in Crysis 2 compared to 3.

Definitely,coming from the console space spiderman miles morales is the best showcase of ray tracing so far because of all the tall skyscrapers.

@@RayVa0 Definitely, Watch Dogs Legion was fun to look at with ray traced reflections (though somewhat flawed with fairly low render distance before cubemaps seem to take over). Any open world game with lots of glass surfaces like that probably is. I should get my hands on a PS5 at some point.

Yeah, Crysis and Crysis 2 Remastered also have SVOGI, voxel based global illumination ray tracing, which Crysis 3 Remastered doesn't have. Crysis 3 is kind of disappointing as it didn't get many visual upgrades, though it still looks great these days

@@RayTracingRevolution The retail OG games AO was a dropping mess in some scenes. Of course normal people arent going to notice. At least with my screenspace replacement, it doesnt drop. Its also more stable than, examples follow: Call of Duty Remastered HBAO The Witcher 2 SSAO Far Cry 3 HBAO Far Cry 4 HBAO Shadow of Mordor HBAO Terminator resistance Forget And so on.... The edge of the screen stability in these titles is such garbage.

I would have loved for Crysis 3 to get the full ray-traced global illumination treatment. It's up to date in an average sense, but not cutting edge as it was in 2013. I know that more extensive remasters weren't on the table for Crytek / were likely not deemed financially viable or possible to deliver within the expected timeframe.

Wow, I was legitamately struggling to see any differences while watching on a 65” 4K from 5 feet away. Very conflicted between “It was just that well made in 2013” and “not a flushed out RT mode”. I feel like it would be a different story if the game was built from the ground up with RT in mind

Main differences imo is glass surfaces and puddles, and some polished metals. It does apply to most pbr materials I assume, just very subtle.

Definitely helps the materials in places, but i feel like RT Shadows and AO could've done a bit more to the image while costing roughly the same if not less performance wise. Especially since water gets Planar Reflections and the open spaces with lush vegetation would get a lot from it, while industrial stuff would still get a nice boost.

Pretty weird how in C3R you can't see your reflection in windows and other glossy surfaces with RT, but in C2R you can. I wonder why they did it like that..

@@RayTracingRevolution my guess that its animation related. Maybe in the cutscenes 3rd person model didn't has any animations so it would be visible in the rt reflections.

Honestly i think they should've chosen ray traced shadows instead. The shadows of the grass would look mindblowing.

The game crashes anytime turning on RT, even at 1080p with a 6700 XT. I've seen forums with people having this issue with Nvidia cards too.

I dont think remastered trilogy is much better than normal trilogy! Just a 2-3 GB difference! Its just lose of time because they can spend more time in games to make it more realistic! I think that Crytek forgot how to make crysis! Nothing personal i am big crysis fan! But all remastered games have a little bit better graphics that before! I hope that Crytek will not make same mistakes in Crysis 4!

I can only dream about playing games with RT. If I want playing 30FPS (no I'm not) with RT on. I can play @4k ultra 80-100FPS in almost every game but turning RT on @1440p gives me 30-40FPS, this is hard to swallow

Out of all the things that crysis 3 needs in terms of ray tracing is GI. The dated blob AO around geometry looks really shite. Crytek refused to use lightmapping which did the punch.

While graphically impressive, I always found the grass to look strange, the blades are far too large

Looks like someone washed the windows lol they were foggy and drizzled before. Smart way to hide limitations by the devs originally

no doubt a luxury feature right now, will likely take several generations until mid and low tier cards can use the feature at acceptable fps (and a recovered GPU market)

I'm getting ray tracing with an 8gb RX580, I don't understand why they say only nvidia and it's perfect playing with a motherboard from a few years ago, notice on several amd motherboards you can play the trilogy with rtx. Cheers

Probably the worst implementation of RT I've seen yet. I keep trying to turn it on to see if it's worth the gigantic hit to the frame rate, and I'm playing 7K at about 80 FPS, very smooth. With max RT on, frame rate is 50 and not very smooth, and the image quality is barely improved. Most games with RT look so much better it's worth running it at a lower resolution for the quality improvement ray tracing provides.

rraytracing is mostly overrated... the performance hit is too bigfor the little improvements of picture quality... the 3000 series are too weak to perform heavy raytracing and bounce lightening... console are also weak in raytracing performance... so future games will be developed with baked lightening still... or get so good optimized that you also wouldnt need a strong raytracing card... for now im good with rx 6950 xt, amd is not bad decission, but we will see in future games if developers will develop for people with top end hardware gpus...
