***For those having trouble getting this to work*** Using this recipe I was unable to get the mixture to coat the surface without beading. Doing a bunch of research I saw alcohol has a much lower surface tension than water. I lightly heated a 1to1 mixture of 70% isopropyl alcohol and urea in a pot while stirring (stinks) and removed from heat then added a little distilled water until the urea had dissolved. Added to spray bottle or bowl and use a foam brush to apply by saturating the end and rub over surface. Step back and watch crystals grow.
@Florislaurens7 ай бұрын
In addition to the above I can gladly mention that I now have the annoying beading under control. Tried everything from changing the sanding, changing the urea mixture ratio, adding more ox gall, changing the degreasing, changing the temperature, changing the cloths and spunges and...nothing made it work properly. Now it appears the ox gall doesn't work that good for some reason. It all has to do with the surface tension of the water/urea mixture because when I added a few drops of the strong cleaner/degreaser with the name Dasty (the Dutch viewers will know now) it "magically" worked all of a sudden. No beading anymore on my test tube so now the bike is next!!

@Piclutchu6 ай бұрын
I will try this. I only got water drops on the frame and no crystals. How did it go? Do you habe more tips? I will be thankful. @claptinfan
@Piclutchu6 ай бұрын
Thanks. I have used 70% Isopr. Alcohol indtead of the Water 1:1 and heated it a little bit to solve the urea. If its not solving judt add a tony bit more distilled water. Soak a big paper towel in that mixture and very quickly soak the frame with it. You have to be quick because the alcohol evapored quickly.
@ralphinho775 ай бұрын
@@Florislaurens So instead of ox gall you used Dasty or both?
@ChronoCard Жыл бұрын
Okay, I did this and was having issues with the effects paint beading up when applied to the frame.. I then tried it with dish soap and it worked, but the crystals weren't large enough for me. So, I tried it again. Don't forget to shake the ox gall! I thought I had a bad batch when I tried to coat the frame with a 2% ox gall/water mixture and it beaded again but then accidentally knocked the bottle of ox gall over when I went to reach for it for a second batch and noticed it started foaming. Gave it a quick shake, added it to the mixture and it worked like a charm. Thanks, Martin! My friend is going to love the amazing paint job!
@nogood20637 ай бұрын
Did you use the same ratios as in he video? I am trying it now but it’s not quite working the same. I tried the dish soap and that helped with the beading, but with or without the soap I couldn’t get the crystals to grow enough.
@ChronoCard7 ай бұрын
@@nogood2063 I used the same ratio. If it's still beading, I'd hit it with a clear coat then sand it.

Once again, thanks for the inspiring video! I am really starting to think that the crystal FX paint is the way to go on the rear suspension of my '94 Cannondale Super V project. I painted it an another bike after being inspired by your other videos. The end results were decent but I want to fix some mistakes I made ( On the Super V it is tiny thumbprint left in the 2K clear coat that wasn't quite completely cured when I moved the bike off the paint stand) and the second reason I want to repaint the bike is to challenge myself more. FYI, I also attempted the crackle finish paint job on my '94 Cannondale Delta V.. I couldn't get the crackle to work the way I wanted, so I got busy and sanded down the bike again and repainted it a Acid Green to Titanium Metallic fade. Thank you for the inspiration to get my creative ideas going.

I've painted 2 frames, the first with 2k clearcoat the second with 1k clearcoat. after just assembling the bikes the 1k clearcoat already had some scratches on it. after 1 riding season the 1k clearcoat chipped on multiple spots. buy the paint as cheap as possible but just make sure to use a quality clearcoat.
@MetalY2KMusic2 жыл бұрын
I have to say that the 1k probably has a longer cure time since it's formulated to be all-in-one, whereas a 2k is hardener and paint and they mix and flash quickly and cure very quickly and become very hard. The 1k will in theory take much longer to cure to full hardness.

How long after black spray you can sand the with scotch pad ? Thanks for clarifying :)

I absolutely love your videos and they've given me the confidence to paint my carbon frame. I have an S-Works Ready to Paint frameset. The logos are just decals. And it looks to have a very thin clearcoat layer over the bare carbon. How much prep work is required for the Specialized Ready to Paint frames? Do I need more than a quick sanding or scuffing of the clear coat? And my plan is using the 1K primer you linked, Montana Gold spray cans for a simple gold logo and white background, then the 2K gloss clearcoat for a shiny finish. Does that sound good? Also, do you have any tips or experience with the Montana Gold Marble Effect spray cans? I was thinking about doing a marble effect. Keep an eye out in the future. Maybe you can do a critique video because I'm trying to use all of your tips to get a quality job done.
