Crystal Palace 1888: An Acoustic Study

We were surprised to hear how many actually missed this post and have requested its return.
Although these are not the only recordings ever made in the Crystal Palace, they are the earliest, and the only recording and reconstruction of the raw acoustics.
So here it is once again, and based on the response to removing it, probably for good. There may be some typos here and there but the science behind it is still just as good as it ever was.
So back to the Crystal Palace we go and we hope you enjoy it!

This was absolutely haunting. How magnificent it must have been to be in the audience that day, and how magnificent it is that we can hear a few moments of that very day 136 years later!

You're welcome. We only dropped the post, the original remained on our drives. We had thought of re-doing it, but the current version seemed OK on re-examination.

Very interesting. Thanks for the efforts and explanations. The sound of the huge choir is quite remarkable for that ancient era of recording. I also find it interesting that in that same period, there were much smaller venues with vastly superior acoustics, a number of which are still in use.

Of course the Brahms's wax cylinder is required for a restauration 😀

The original cylinder still exists but it is in unplayable condition by all accounts. It was transferred in the early 20th century to 78. The earliest, unfiltered version was the source for our post of it. It has gathered a fair amount of praise and even a little criticism. There always some who want to dispute findings without doing any of the work on a number of our posts. You get used to it after awhile.
