Crystal Sound System ft Beenie, Frankie Paul, Yellowman, Ignorancy 1987
Paul was born Paul Blake in 1965. He was blind at birth, but an operation on a hospital ship gave him a small visual capacity; he later went to New York to obtain a pair of high-powered glasses that helped even further. He attended a Salvation Army school for the blind, where he first began singing. When Stevie Wonder visited the school, Paul sang for him, and an impressed Wonder encouraged him to go into music. Paul learned the piano, drums, and guitar while still in school, and was most influenced as a singer by Dennis Brown in his early days. As Frankie Paul, he made his first recording, "African Princess," in 1980, when he was still just 15. In 1983, he appeared in two volumes in Channel One's Showdown series, one with Sugar Minott and the other with Little John. The former LP contained Paul's first major hit, the Henry "Junjo" Lawes-produced "Worries in the Dance," which aligned him with the emerging dancehall sound. Lawes also produced 1984's Pass the Tu-Sheng-Peng, whose title cut -- an ode to ganja -- was a huge, star-making hit in Jamaica.
Paul reached his prime in the mid-'80s, cutting excellent albums like the George Phang-produced Tidal Wave (1985) and Alesha (1987), and the Philip "Fatis" Burrell-produced Warning (1987). His hit singles included "Tidal Wave," "Alesha," "Casanova," "Sara," "Fire Deh a Mus Mus Tail," "Slow Down," and many others. Paul continued to record for a variety of labels in the '90s, with LP highlights including 1991's Should I and 1994's Hard Work. To keep up his prolific recording pace, he came to depend heavily on covers, whether of reggae classics or contemporary American R&B material. He continued into the new millennium as a tremendously active presence on the reggae scene.
Yellowman was born Winston Foster in Negril, Jamaica, in 1959 (some accounts say 1956). An early target for abuse because of his albinism, he grew up in an institution in Kingston, with little to keep him company besides music. Influenced by early toasting DJs like U-Roy, he practised rhyming and got a job with the Gemini Sound System as a substitute DJ. Christening himself Yellowman and dressing in a bright yellow suit, he peppered his lyrics with jokes about his skin colour and outlandish tales of his sexual conquests. In 1979, he won a landslide victory at the well-known Tastee Talent Contest, and within months he had become one of Jamaica's top concert draws, thanks to a dynamic, humorous stage show in which he often used the microphone to mimic his anatomical gifts.
Yellowman recorded prolifically in the early '80s, at one point flooding the Jamaican market with more than 40 singles. His first full-length album, Them a Mad Over Me, was recorded for Channel One in 1981 and featured the hit title track and the single "Me Kill Barnie," an answer record to Lone Ranger's hit "Barnabas Collins." He also scored with singles like "Operation Eradication" and the infamously slack "Shorties," which Peter Tosh condemned as degrading to women (hardly the first time such a criticism would be levelled at him). Despite this success, Yellowman didn't truly hit his stride on record until he hooked up with groundbreaking dancehall producer Henry "Junjo" Lawes.
Beenie Man was born Moses Davis in the Waterhouse district of Kingston, Jamaica, on August 22, 1973. His first shot at stardom came when he was only eight when won the national Teeny Talent contest. This led to a meeting with producer Junjo Lawes, who recorded his debut single, "Too Fancy." Bunny Lee then took the boy under his wing and put him to work at his Unlimited sound system. Lee produced Beenie Man's 1983 debut, The Invincible Beenie Man (The 10-Year-Old DJ Wonder), and the young artist collaborated on a few songs with Barrington Levy in 1984, but after that, he returned his focus to schoolwork for a time. In 1992, now a proper teenager, Beenie reactivated his music career by appearing at Reggae Sunsplash and releasing his second album Cool Cool Rider. After Beenie Man spent a brief period publicly squabbling with veteran DJ Bounty Killer, the two reconciled and collaborated on the 1993 album Guns Out.
His Sly & Robbie-produced 1994 single "No Mama No Cry," a version of Bob Marley's "No Woman No Cry," topped the Jamaican chart and brought the DJ instant acclaim. Now working with all the island's top producers, he recorded a slew of songs, many of them religiously themed due to a recent conversion to Rastafarianism, including "Praise Him" and "World Dance." Full-length albums Defend It and Dis Unu Fi Hear were both released in 1994 and combined more culturally themed raps with a hardcore dancehall sound. In 1995, Beenie signed to Island Records and released Blessed, which included the international dancehall smash "Slam."
