Crystallization Speed and Crystal Size

Influence of the rate of crystallization in the size of the crystals. We are going to prepare two solutions of copper (II) sulfate , CuSO4, in water. In the first one the solution will be made in hot water and aftewards cooled down fast in a cooling bath. With the second one the solution will be made at room temperature and we wil let it cool slowly several days at that temperature until the water gets evaporated.
In the first one the crystals are small because being so fast there is no time to grow crystals while in the slow one, as long as the water is slowly evaporating, the crystals are forming steadily reaching a large size.
Copper sulfate is really copper (II) sulfate pentahydrate (CuSO4.5H2O), it has five water molecules at the crystal lattice surrounding the CuSO4. If we heat these blue crystals (dry crystals), the water escapes from the crystal network and we have copper (II) sulfate anhydrous, of white color. That lost water is called water of crystallization.
We also check that copper (II) sulfate is a paramagnetic substance, it behaves like a magnet in presence of a magnetic field.
