In this TouchDesigner tutorial we're looking at how to use feedback to create a crystal growth project and combine it with PBR to project it into 3D space.
This was a Patreon early access, new one out now!

Happy 50th tutorial to you!!!!! Little tips: in a displacement feedback usually i have a normality vector that take the starting point going OVER the feedback chain. So you can add more or less normality to the scene. The normality vec is just a level with like 0.03 of opacity

Wonderful! What could be a really interesting tutorial would be to explain the reasoning behind the feedback loop creation. I mean, we can follow the tutorials step by step and recreate the results, but what makes you decide to add multiple displacements, slopes, blurs, composites (and sometimes multiple feedback loops)? It would be great to gain some insight in the thinking process that goes into the creation, more so than the explanation of what is does (not sure if I make sense here). But anyhow, great tutorial as usual, congrats.

Thanks! I was wondering. Would there be a possibility to make this an ongoing growth? instead of there being a beginning and an end, by pressing 1 on the keyboard. A bit like "recursive displace" from Paketa 12. This video: kzbin.info/www/bejne/nYetqoJnablrepI

I was also wondering this and managed to more or less do it! I created a parallel feedback loop with "edges" filter to add up and create an "age" map of pixels, adding up moving "edges" of the growth and gradually fading them into black. I then fed this into the main feedback loop by faintly introducing white pixels in the areas where the "age" hit a specific threshold (basically turned completely to black). At first it would quickly converge into total whiteness. Then I balanced several tiny values in this "age" feedback loop (in 16bit format), and introduced another noise to limit the introduction of new white pixels that create new growth waves. Finally it hit balance and was able to run for hours continuously and even persist with some changes to other parameters.

You sure the order doesn’t matter on difference? 5-2 is 3 and 2-5 is -3, doesn’t that have an effect? Imma test this :)
@drewdabeast69

You’re thinking of the subtract operation. The difference operation takes the absolute value and therefore it doesn’t matter. You can see what all the operations actually do if you go to the derivative wiki page and search composite TOP

@@drewdabeast69 awesome, thank you for the clarification, indeed I did go check and it does as you said, which makes sense, difference would be the amount of difference of each pixel indeed abs(a-b)
