As I said in the video the GX-80 and CS-80 are both fantastic instruments (in fact I own both!). My preference in this case goes to the GX-80 but as I said above it's a personal perception. I have both. The increased complexity of the Cherry Audio's GX-80 integration is a complete non-issue. I own several plugins that have far more numerous and complex parameters, this doesn't even rate with those bad boys. The sound of the CA unit is simply stellar. The Bladerunner/Vangelis sounds are PERFECT! Buy it, it's a bargain!

I owned a CS80 for many years and quite a few CS60s and one CS50. Based on this demo the GX80 sounds more accurate to me, seems to capture the more complex HF overtones. Just wished i still had those CS80 and 60s ( very nice also) gigged one and recorded with it in the 80s.

I've owned the Arturia V Collection for several years now and I've been trying out the Cherry Audio GX80 on and off for a few weeks. They're both excellent; I can't separate them. So far it comes down to this: - If you already own the Arturia version, stick with it. - If you find 3 or 4 instruments in the Arturia V Collection (totalling MORE individually than the full collection), get the V Collection. - Otherwise, get the Cherry Audio.

I have both. I’ve only been playing with the GX for a short while obviously but I think I can hear a difference. To my ears the Arturia is a little bigger and creamier and much closer to the classic sound. But that doesn’t negate the beautiful work Cherry Audio has done here. Its hybrid approach makes it something quite unique and a welcome addition. It’s something like a brother or sister to the Arturia. Both are great!

For me the ultimate test is when composing a track, bringing in a new soft synth (trial version), and finding a prefect tone within less than a minute. This automatically leads to a fantastic new musical part, and I am sold. - the same goes for efx.

Update: This is my second comment and after just watching Tim Shoebridge demonstrating this synth on Cherry Audio's channel, I bought it straight away! What didn't come across in Andrew's video for me is that the GX80 is more than a CS80 emulation - it's actually a GX1 and CS80 emulation! It also supports some amazing aftertouch and modulation features which you don't get on Arturia's CS80 plugin. For the price at the moment especially the GX80 was a no brainer.. Thank you Andrew for lighting the fuse on this one, and thanks to Tim Shoebridge and Cherry Audio for keeping that fuse burning! 😊

Both plugs are really nice IMO. I have the CA GX80, totally satisfied. The Arturia CS80 may have some advantages, but I really like the GX1 filter options in the GX80, which opens up a whole lot of subtly different tones. It's really like having another synth sound wise with the same layout. The GX80 sounds great to my ears, it can do all the CS80 and GX1 sounds. Sounds authentic to me, not hard to listen to a commercial recording featuring either synth, and matching the tone 100%. I'd go as far too say I don't even want a CS80 or GX1, if I owned either, or both if sell them straight away. Who wants the hassle of dealing with heavy old synths with 50 year old, unreliable electronics. I love the DAW integration too of plugs. VSTs have really advanced in the last 20 years, really there is no reason to deal with hardware, unless you want too.

So, after buying three different versions of CS-80 emulation from Arturia, Memorymoon and Cherry Audio - GX-80 - I can say that the first two sound the most like a CS-80. The Arturia Vintage Collection 9 is such a treasure trove of synths, why not pick it up? Unless the offerings at Cherry Audio will fill your synthing needs handily, and it well could. The GX-80 doesn't sound like a CS-80, but some sort of turbocharged monster synth hybrid. I have to make a quick edit here, because one thing I forgot is that a GX-1 is two CS-80s with more parameters, which means four separate synth layers available. And you can play all four layers at once with one of the GX-1s keyboards, which is a huge sound, so my apologies for saying earlier that this is some kind of turbocharged monster synth. At the original retail price of $35,000 - well over $100,000 today - yes, Yamaha made a beast of a synth which only people like Stevie Wonder, Vangelis or Keith Emerson could afford. Another detail I forgot is that the GX-1 filters were a lighter 9db slope versus the CS-80s 12db, so they had a slightly fizzier but still nice quality to them. Two flavors to mix and match as you please for hybrid monster massiveness. What's more, Cherry Audio added a few more features to this monster, and who doesn't want more features? Like giving the Oberheim Eight Voice ADSR envelopes over the original's ADS envelopes, which are more trouble to get the decays out of them you like for a patch. If you want a sleeper suggestion, I have one. Get the GForce Oddity 3 and use it in poly mode. You essentially have a poor man's ARP/Rhodes Chroma emulation with three oscillators - one a sub but it has a saw/square wave selection and is fully tunable. Likewise if you have Arturia's Vintage Collection, which I do, the ARP 2600 does the same thing in poly mode, and is a patchable monster to boot.

I have both Arturia's CS-80 (whose sound engine that rebuilt last year, and the version 4 is clearly the best version of the Arturia synth to date). I only own the Elka-X and GX-80 by Cherry Audio, but to my mind the Cherry Audio synths both sound as if they have better analogue "feel", with richer sounds, than Arturia does, in spite of the additional features that the Arturia synth does. The GX-80 has a few hundred more presets too, if that is your thing.

GX-80: MPE is not part of the design due to the complexity that would arise from GX-80's dual layer architecture. It does feature polyphonic aftertouch, for the controllers that do support that. When it came out the CS80 was a monster synth, but within a few short years the Sequential Prophet~5 defined what a big poly synth sound was going to be forever after. The GX80 has a decidedly bigger sound than the CS80, possibly because of the GX1 modeling done in it. And do take note that the CS80 doesn't sound like a GX1, and the GX80 is named for this hybrid build of the two synths. Playing off of what @houdinididiit stated before, the CS80 is a slightly creamier sound, the GX1 is a bigger badder sound, worthy of Keith Emerson. So I want both, and have the wonderful Arturia Vintage Collection featuring the CS80, and it does a great job. As well as the Origin hardware synth which uses a few choice hunks of the Arturia softies like the CS80, and I spend most of my time with it making a number of vintage synthesizers. When I can tear myself away from the Origin, Arturia VC. Omnisphere and Zebra, I intend to add a few Cherry Audio pieces to my DAW, as well as a few of GForce's offerings like the Oberheim Bundle.

That is a very difficult comparison. I agree overall the GX wins, however you've also shown here how great both of these synths would sound *together*. The GX sounds deeper and richer, while the CS sounds more authentic. Together it's the best of both worlds! Even already owning VC9, I still think that adding the GX to my synth collection will be worthwhile... so thanks for pushing me in that direction :D

The comparison you make @5:22 between the two CS strings settings is a bit pointless, they sound identical if you open up the Arturia's filter, playing one with the filter open and one with it closed is a little pointless.

One of the key aspects of the cs80 is the play action from a keyboard. The response seems to be programmable on the cs80v. The other key aspect of the original was that the oscs were never in tune. The sine wave is an important element too as the volume adjustment should be subtle. This is where the old cs80v v3 got it wrong but now is corrected In the v4.

as someone who has a real cs80, both are very good. but you miss the after touch and the keyboard that is a complete controller. also the pornamento strip needs to be touch, though with a touch screen its a little better. but for the price cherry stuff is great.

I find this comparison very odd and seems to attempt to make the Cherry Audio GX80 sound better. For example, you have chosen a normal Brass sound for the GX80, yet a sound called Ascendant brass for the Arturia CS80, which must be the worst Brass sound it has. Same with the 'preset string' . If you actually use the little preset buttons then I am afraid the GX80 is really bad, whereas the CS80 sounds very good, very authentic. Same for the keys ...the CS80 has a very nice emulation of the famous CS electric piano, used so much by vangelis. feel you chose some of the CS80's worst presets when making the comparison The GX80 isn't a bad synth and has some really nice sounds, but it isn't as good as the CS80. The CS80 sounds more 'analogue'. Then again, it is much more expensive, so should be better.....and it is.

I did try the Arturia CS80V demo for quite a while, with , without fx, not impressed!. The GX-80 has much fatter sound and has a really good GX-1 emulation, i would choose the GX-80 over the Arturia CS80V any day!. I dont need 99% perfect emulation of CS80. Another thing is, When the Cherry Audio did released the Elka X, the Elka X, is by far best emulated Elka Synthex, a few software company did a poor emulation of a the Elka Synthex. The only poor emulation cherry audio did, is CA2600 (ARP 2600), which arturia does far better and allso include the most important thing , sequencer /arpeggiator. Cherry audio did not integrate a sequencer /arpeggiator, which is a shame.

I own both and although Arturia did a great job the GX80 takes the sound to a whole other level. You can play Vangelis with your eyes closed and really feel the difference. Btw, I own a good number of hardware synths and the GX80 holds its own against them.

These are synthesizers, not romplers. Doesn’t make any sense to compare sounds due to their names, imho. Why not just dial in the same string and brass sound on both? Too lazy? Then CS80 samples will outperform both, for sure! I did a review of Arturias CS80V rev4 vs. rev3. Both Arturias sound very different, too. And my CS60 sounds very different from all of these, again.

Although Vangelis passed away, from the sort demo presets that I heard, the GX-80 by Cherry Audio will probably resurrect Vangelis and bring him back "alive" in everyone's home or pro music production studio! The Arturia sounded "different" although the modern capabilities it has, but I think I can live without them. Although it sounded "different", someone can create "different" sounding patches... I have the arturia and demoed the ca. I have to say that the ca sounds like every ca synth. They all seems have the same dna. The cs80 sounds like the memprymoog and vice versa. There is more in the optical difference than in the sound. I bet rhe using the same sound framework for all theyr synths. They all sound the same for me but the miniverse witch sounds really fat. So the arturia have much more character.

I have two restored Yamaha CS-80's. If you noodle around with any curiosity for any length of time, it will hand you presents like it's Christmas and New Year's combined. It can't help but make hits in the right hands. I purposely don't release anything because it would be unfair;-) It's about the player too. lol I wish I could help others who never get the chance to get comfortable on one. To understand the magic the original has is sublime.

For my ear the Cherry Audio GX 80 exhibits a sound richer in overtones, whereas the Arturia CS 80 sounds for me more plain sinusoid. BUT i also believe that here we compare the tessitura of different song voices, or as in photography some like more brillant rich and satturated colours, others more the unsaturated palette, some prefer razor sharp outlines, whereas other prefer a softer, graduated impression; THEREFORE, not only it depends to the small channel of information we can channel into our brains, but also the subjective impression and actual mood we are in. Lets wait, what results and emotions the artists of this planet will evoke.

I’ve got the arturia and I’ve just tried the GX 80 - to be honest I find them both a bit boring - I’d probably fly thru the presets if I’m trying to find a sound but other then that not interested in programming it. I can understand the interest in these things but far better ways to get stunning sounds these days - but saying that it’s as cheap as chips so if you not got much money then it could be worth your time 😊

@@AGDugros That is not an excuse, moreover all GX-1 additions in GX-80 are marked in orange, so you could simply not use them and all other controls should be close to each other. Even if they are not so close, you could still try to match them - there are a lot of other comparisons of even different synths around KZbin, where they make them sound similar. This comparison is absolutely pointless.

Comparing the synths based on preset name seems weird to me. Brass is a very common name and so it is to be expected that they will not be the same. You need to compare the same settings, not the preset name. I have seen better videos about these synths for sure. This comparison is unfair on too many levels.

For a synth like this really what matters is how close to the original and the Cherry Audio just doesn't sound like it. So at that point all of the creativity stuff doesn't matter because you can get other soft synths that have plenty of creative power.
