I’d love to see the sport put a tracking u it into the weight so we can see the motion and track it’s path. So much could be learned from that data. It would revolutionize the sport.

have not been to one of these events... Is there a target in the field ...or just distance?

It's distance, but has to fall within a 30 degree wedge-shaped area to be considered in-bounds.

What line do you recommend to cast over 100 yrds with a 5 ounce weight? I use braided line.

We cast monofilament “main line” in tournaments… 0.28 mm diameter (~10 lb. test) for 125g. sinkers is the minimum size allowable for that weight. If you’re fishing with a conventional reel, braid is not ideal due to higher risk of horrific bird’s nests. 15-20 lb. mono is usually used for distance casting at the beach in our area, and 100 yards is no sweat with that line if you have the right skills.

We ran a seminar in July, and are mulling over doing some tutorial content, but to be honest, the most concise, well-organized, effective beginner/intermediate casting content out there is Tommy Farmer's "5 fundamentals" system. We couldn't do it any better ourselves. Check out his and Carolina Cast Pro's Facebook Pages for an abbreviated video series. He also has an in-depth DVD.
