Absolutely SPOT-ON !!! I’m 62 years old. Financially stable. And have been in love with the Corvette since I saw a yellow 73 being delivered to my neighbor. I was 11 years old and the lines on that beauty left an impression on me all the way to the present! I’ve owned a couple in the past but have been eyeing up C6 ZR-1’s on KZbin for years.

It’s now ! Just turned 59 and as you know I just bought my dream C5, a 1999 FRC garage kept in pristine condition with only 19k miles. Love it. Put nearly 500 miles on it in just 2 weeks. Ironically you mentioned about paying more per month! My current plan which I’ve put on an Xcel spreadsheet: I’ll be making an extra 20% (about $100) payment every month plus a one time $1,500 annually in July, it will reduce my loan by 26 months and ill save about $2600 in interest over the life of the loan. A total of almost $10k in balloon payments. Also have a high yield savings account setup for $100/month automatic deposit. So I’ll have $1,200 annually saved up for maintenance issues because shit happens and something will need replacing. Before I found my FRC about a month ago I had 2 options: Save up for a larger deposit and buy a C5 next spring/summer OR wait until I retire in 5 years and get it. Lyle you’re spot on, tomorrow is not guaranteed and NOW was the right time to fulfill my 5 year passion of getting a C5 ! Lyle , thanks for all you do for the corvette community!

I didn't go through that much red tape. I just HAD to buy the C4 that fell in my lap (driveway) and took out a loan from a shark with fmia connections. She may have cost me an arm and a leg.. but this car is WORTH it! I am mostly happy that she has power steering as well as an AUTOMATIC transmission. It comes in handy these days.

This video really hit home with me Lyle. The last point you made where tomorrow isn't guaranteed is what my mother said to me 3 years ago while I was having a cup of coffee with her. She knew since I was 9 I wanted a corvette and would never let it go. She told me that while I was able to enjoy it go ahead and buy one. Especially since I had a company car to drive during the week. I will never forget the feeling when I signed the paperwork with her sitting next to me and then finally a week later picking it up with her in the passenger seat. That feeling for me will last a lifetime. I still remember the amount of looks we got driving the Vette back home while everyone in their Falcons and Commodores were sitting there and staring in envy.

Bought my Z cash too at 19! Was it smart? Heck no. But the fun and memories a year and a half into ownership are totally worth it. It’s needed a lot of work and I’m currently rebuilding the whole top end of the motor [lost a lifter and came across a melted piston :( ] but I’m going to throw it back together this week and fingers crossed I won’t have any major issues for a while. But I probably will because I drive it to it’s limits regularly

Lyle, you really hit home with this vid. I leased a new 92 C4 in the & turned it in 5 yrs later, but always wanted one more. Bought my C6 last year (with the invaluable help of your vids) at the ripe old age of 70. Knock on wood; I take care of myself, am in good shape & work out intensely, but there are no guarantees! I almost misted up a little at the end of the vid. This is why you're one of those people I'd most like to have a beer with.

Lyle…your dealing the straight scoop…one of my biggest things with cars is that if you want to keep it nice, it cannot be parked outside 24/7…even with a good car cover. If you can’t garage your Corvette (or other car you really car about) expect it to be destroyed by the elements. I have neighbors with three car garages who have so much junk in them they have to park their brand new cars in the driveway. Within a few years it really shows. The rubber starts looking like it’s rotting, clear coat starts to fail, and the interior suffers. Thanks for all the good advice you provide for us!

In 2017 I was looking for a vette, I ended up finding a 2014 Mustang GT/CS with 14,000 miles for a very reasonable price. 2022 I was looking for a vette and ended up finding a beautifully kept 2017 370Z for reasonable price. I have been looking for a Porsche Cayman since the beginning of the year and this last week found a 2 owner 2003 Anniversary Corvette with only 11,000 and never been driven in the rain, finally got my vette.

Thank you for your honesty about Corvette ownership. On my third. At 67. Own a low miles C-5. First was a 1974 350 4speed. Had a 455 TA, with a trailer hitch. Was actually more fun to drive and would run away from the Vette. Second one was a 1986 high mile car that I had next to nothing in. Now I have the 2004 C-5 and a Silverado pickup. Good combination and the Vette's more fun to drive. The truck is way more practical.

I can't imagine what might make your car rare, but I'll take your word on it. I never sweat the color on a used car, and wound up with a black convertible, which can be very pretty. But I do think a more visible color, like a silver car, has real safety advantages in a world awash with SUV's and drivers using their phones.

kind of nice to listen to a man who has built a life around work he enjoys, because such a realization of life's possibilities is rare and wise. The rarity is evident from all the angry people running around so prominently today, and the non seriousness of their choices clearly indicates that critical thinking is a useful life tool. Despite what is clearly the most beautiful body style of all the corvettes in the background , I would suggest that the ultimate realization of a pleasure car is an open car, making the convertible the ultimate expression of a corvette, if anyone was wondering. Modern city traffic has taken a lot of the luster off of that position, but once in a location where driving is pleasurable , the concept becomes self evident. Besides being in a position where people outside the car will talk to you inside, one of the other features never realized in a closed car is being able to smell the different varieties of trees or the meadow grass when driving on a mountain road. I am not a hard core gear head, I just have accepted transportation as a need and enjoy well designed machines, which lead me to the almost practical corvette. I consider my C5 as a suitable platform to financially support through the years. It serves my needs as a fun car to own, and a modern car , while offering less required owner involvement, would only offer me more advanced creature comforts and electronics , since I don't desire more speed or buying more gas. Don't get me wrong , the earlier cars have fantastic top tier styling, but put next to the car in the video, might only come off as "cute".

Another great video Lyle! In 2009 at age 45 I got my first Corvette, a '94 coupe. Loved, owned and DROVE that car for 12 years. Was it the "latest and greatest".....no. However it was just FUN to drive. In '20 I picked up a '12 GS convertible (my first drop top) and within a week realized I'd never be without a convertible again. The C6 was such a great car to drive I soon found myself trading in the '94 for a '19 coupe. Loved the C7 so much I searched and ended up trading the C6 for a C7 convertible, so at one point I was fortunate enough to have two beautiful C7's in my garage. Last summer a deal for a brand new C8 basically fell into my lap so....yup.... traded the '19 in for the C8 HTC. Two completely different yet amazing cars and I couldn't be happier with both. That being said, every time I see a clean C4 on the road I just smile and wonder if I'll have another one someday. Through 14 years of Corvette ownership no matter what car it was I was/am driving I always had to turn and look back at is as I'm walking away. Any Corvette is never "just another car". Keep up the great work you and everyone at CS do!

Thanks for this. I bought my first Corvette two years ago at the age of 61. A 74 C3 that was about 95% restored. I paid with cash I inherited from my father and at the time I felt more than a little guilty, but now I realize that this car is my Dad's final gift to me and every minute I spend driving it or working on it is time spent reflecting on what a great Dad he was. I was able to make a good decision on which C3 to buy based largely on your advice. I bought my Vette as soon as it was practical, and had I waited even a year, I think the moment would have been lost. I was glad to hear to tell folks to not wait too long.

Good call on that one... I bought my C6 '08 Z51 Convertible with only 34,400 miles on it for 31 out the door in September... I figured that was not to bad of deal given the current car market. I also put $16,000 cash down so my payments are around 250ish a month (very doable for me)... I'm extremely happy with it, even though I did have to replace all the fluids, replace a tire (I had a blowout on the highway... not fun), and I had to replace the lovely Harmonic Balancer... All in all though, she is driving like a new car and is awesome to own 👍

Amen Lyle ! I’m so glad I bought mine when I did. Raised my family, got my kids through college, then bought my C5 Z06. Young enough to enjoy it, but old enough to be responsible with it. I’ve tracked it, toured with it, showed it, and it has generally enhanced my life. It’s not my daily driver, of course, but it gets driven every week. It brings me so much joy, and, thankfully my wife loves it too. Thank you for all the great content you produce, this one is one of your best !

Wow Amen brother. I knew when I was a kid I wanted one I think I was 39 when I bought my first one a 94 glass top C4 beautiful car but your right Lyle I was at a good point in life where I could own the car not the car owning me. I then feel into a good deal on a 98 convertible and now I have a 2010 Grand Sport convertible and a 79 T top C3. I’m 60 now I have learned a lot about these cars and a lot of it from these amazing videos. Just yesterday I took the 79 to Walmart and did just what you said I turned around and said to myself that’s my car. Also involved in the Muskego Wisconsin Corvette Club nothing better then going on a drive with 30 other corvettes. Your right Lyle we don’t know if tomorrow is coming. I love everything about the corvette community. Thank you for this video

Lyle, I really enjoyed your broadcast on "When to but a Corvette". You brought up some really valid points, but the one that really hit home, with me, was nobody is promised tomorrow! I wanted one all my life. At age 12 I fanaticized about owning a corvette while watching "Route 66" on tv. I retired at 62 and life was life, things got hurried and blurred, I put it off. I finally had the money and found I couldn't "justify" spending that money when other people were hungry and etc. I realized at 70 and being diagnosed with a formidable illness that it was now or never. I didn't buy a new one ,although I could afford it. I rationalized buy giving to some charities and bought a c6. A red convertable that for the past three years has been like an old friend. Thank you for all your videos and advise. This was spot on, at least for me. Bii phelps

I'm so very glad I didn't wait to get my 2016 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray Z51 1LT 7-speed manual in Laguna Blue! I always wanted a blue Corvette as long as I could remember. I acquired mine on March 19th, 2017 as an early 38th birthday present to myself, 11 days after I reached 6-figure annual income. I bought it "used" with 5,507 miles, still under factory warranty, and never having been registered. Saved $12k off MSRP. I've got almost 135k miles on it now and 3.5 payments to go. No major issues. I've left it in "Eco" mode for about 95% of those miles. No AFM problems. Oh, and for a time it was my only automobile (I also have 3 motorcycles), and I drive it in all weather, even during Winter in SE Tennessee. It handles very well in snow & icy conditions, as long as you're not an idiot. I've got video on my KZbin channel of driving it in snow.

Great video. You are so correct about tomorrow not being guaranteed. I’ve been in health care for 39 years in critical care, trauma and now an anesthetist for the last 24, you never know what is cooking inside of you. Stuff happens all the time and without warning. Don’t throw away life waiting for “the right time”. We never know how much time we actually have left. Life goes by in a moment. Enjoy today in every way.

I've always loved C3s, I"m in my early thirties with three toddlers so right now really isn't the best time. But I want to take steps to be prepared when the kids are a little older and less hands on and I have more free time to spend with a classic vette. I want to have something like that so that when the kids get older they can remember how much fun it was to ride around with Dad and take the t tops off. I'm really enjoying watching your videos and learning/day dreaming. Thank you for your videos!

Wow! You've definitely put things in perspective for me, I've always wanted a corvette since I drove one working for a Chevrolet dealer back in '88. I'm not going to continue wishing, but I'm going to start living! With the help of research and the advice of a good shop. (Yours of course!)

Amen, this is a great video. Tomorrow isn’t promised. I’m about to turn 45 in a few weeks. I purchased my first vette last November. Since I was a kid from a little town in East Texas I would pass by the local Chevy Dealership and swore to myself I would have a vette someday. I almost believe it’s good for my health. I love how I feel when I drive it.

Thank you, Lyle, for a great, very thoughtful video. I’ve wanted a Corvette since age 17; and will be 72 in November. After watching your video, I’m determined to get one next year, 2024. I’ve been driving a great 2015.5 Volvo S60 turbo sedan, great car with lots of class. But the need for a Vette still burns inside me. I will not be street racing with it, just drive it gently. Cars actually get more looks driving slow.

Wow what a powerful video. I get the sense that you have talked with many older people that wanted a Corvette ands waited to long to get one. It is also amazing that you keep in touch with people. I saw my first Corvette at Seabrook Beach NH in the early 1960’s is was a C2 convertible. I finally got my first Corvette a C3 in 2020, traded it in for a beautiful C7, then traded it for a Jeep Rubicon. What an idiot I was. I now have a 2005 C6 DSOM convertible 6sp. What a great joy to drive and own. This video is the most comprehensive explanation of when to get a Corvette. It should required viewing for anyone looking to get into the hobby!
