I think the reason distracting yourself makes you perform better is the obvious answer that you're not thinking to yourself as much. So it removes more of the probability of human error and more of muscle memory and reactive plays instead of proactive ones that require you to be actively aware of your gameplay. Tl;dr less awareness = more natural play/less player made misplays.

I think I got the campaign complete achievement around 4-500 hours into Barotrauma. The ending kinda sucks, and a lot of people wind up just doing loops around the last biome to drag it out longer because NG+ is pointless (especially back when it removed husk symbiosis from everyone that had it at the end).
