From x=1 at t=1 to x=1 at t=3 ...only two scenarios are possible. 1) x =2 at t =2, (right step, probability p) and then x =1 at t=3, (left step, probability 1-p ) ... Total prob for this case = p(1-p) ....... For scenario 2) x =0 at t =2, (left step, probability 1-p) and then x =1 at t=3, (right step, probability 1-p)...Total prob for this case (1-p)²= p²-2p+1 ... Hence total prob combined both the scenarios= p(1-p) + p² -2p+1 = 1-p
